He won the All Africa Games gold.
As for "great", it's relative.
KKKKK perhaps thinks he is "great" because:
a. of our expectations of the team after Afcons 2012 and 2013;
b. of the phobia we had of the Zambia, Egypt and, to some extent, Sudan oppositions going in;
c. he is just caught up in our collective sigh of relief that this monster of an African-football-power, Egypt, is finally removed from our path, because people do feel superlative emotions at times like these.
Appiah is not yet great in the global context, not even in the continental context (not in my view, not yet), but, boy, he has done a great job scaling the preliminaries and finally, the knockout.
I think he will out-perform many coaches in Brazil.
I see him taking, at worst, Bronze.
We can then begin to re-visit his "greatness".

CAN GH WIN THE WCUP? YES!
HOWEVER, THE LACK OF POSITIVE TEAM PSYCHOLOGY. COACHES LACKING ENOUGH TECHNICAL ABILITY TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL ARE THE 2 MAIN ISSUES.
SOLUTION: PLAY MORE FRIENDLIES BETWEEN EURO N S AMERICAN TEAMS BEFORE THE WCUP. AA NEEDS PROFESSIONAL HELP. HE LACKS DISCIPLINE N ATTENTION TO DETAIL IN COACHING AT THE ELITE LEVEL.
GFA MUST CONTACT FRANK RIJKAARD ASAP!
THIS IS WAT NAIJA SAW IN AMODU N DECIDED TO LET HIM GO. WE CANT GET RID OF AA, BUT BRING IN A REPUTABLE TECH DIRECTOR TO ASSIST OR WORK WITH HIM.
OTHERWISE, GH WILL GET SMOKED LIKE HIGHGRADE NTAMPE IN BRASIL.
DEFENCE WINS TROPHIES, TOURNAMENTS
THE BEST WAY TO ATTACK IS TO DEFEND!
AA SAID "THE BEST WAY TO DEFEND IS TO ATTACK". THIS IS WRONG. I DONT KNOW IF HE WAS BEING SARCASTIC/ME BOAPA AS U SAY IN TWI, BUT HE IS WRONG.
THE BEST WAY TO ATTACK IS TO DEFEND.E.G COUNTER ATTACKING, GOOD DEFENSIVE TEAMS WITH TOURNAMENTS.
THE TEAMS WITH THE BEST DEFENCES WIN TROPHIES DURING TOURNAMENTS. TEAMS THAT CONCEEDE LESS GOALS IN TOURNAMNTS WIN THE TROPHY. E.G..U17 NAIJA TEAM HAD A VERY GOOD DEFENCE.
U20 WCUP WINNERS FRANCE CONCEEDED THE LEAST GOALS IN THE TOURNEY. POGBA IS IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL TEAM, BUT AA WONT CALL YIADOM AND ASSIFUAH? HOW?
NAIJA WON THE AFCON 12 BCOS OF THEIR DEFENCE. CAMEROON N EGYPT WON THEIR AFCON TROPHIES BCOS OF THEIR DEFENCE. POGBA OF FRANCE U20 IS NOW WITH THE SENIOR FRENCH TEAM. WHY HAS AA DROPPED YIADOM AND ASSIFUAH FROM GBSTARS?
LOOK AT MOURINHO? LOOK AT ANCELOTTI.
THE BEST WAY TO DEFEND IS TO ATTACK, IS WHAT IS OFTEN SAID BY EXPERTS LIKE AA, AND YET IN BIG TOURNAMENTS, GAMES AS WAS IN THE CASE UNDER FERGIE/FERGUSON, AND NOW DAVID MOYES. MAN U HAS HAD TO ADAPT TO
COUNTER THREATS OFFERED BY THE OPPOSITION. INSTEAD OF THE OPPOSITION ALTERING THEIR PLAY TO COUNTER MAN UNITED.

How in the world would you give points without giving any reason? Please allow me to come in.
Handing Fatau Dauda 8pts is not right. This means he did everything almost right. The keeper caused us our first goal, so I believe Appiah would go for Adam in our next match to access him too just to make sure he also is backed with confidence. One hand punch of the ball that beat Dauda's both hands could have changed the game. I will give him 6pts for performing averagely because nothing extraordinary was saved a keeper of his standard couldn't have.
Harrison Afful performed to my satistaction. He wasn't that great but was at the offense to earn the 8 points, since 8 in this article is classified as the highest point. He did well for his standard. He was running like chicken with no head. I mean in a good way. He was all over his area of setting. His setting up for our goal was a superb pass to Asamoah Gyan before it got to KPB.
Daniel Opare played well though his area kept crushing because his backup midfielders, Kwedwo Asamoah and later Wakaso Mubarrack, weren't coming regularly to help as they were supposed it. This made Daniel Opare's moving forward to help offensively, in the process of overlapping, wasn't effective. The second goal for instance, came from that left side of the pitch, moved into the middle of our defensive line, and came back again to the left side. When the Egyptian was bringing the ball to the middle of our defense, most of our players were following him to the middle whilst left the left side wide open. My question was where were those players needed to protect that side of the pitch? At that time Kwedwo Asamoah was already out so it was Wakaso and Daniel Opare's reponsibilities to hold there? Here was another example. Sakabala, the Zamalek's midfielder nearly score a 3rd goal for the Egyptians which was also coming from this same leftside of our area. The opponent saw that there was some kind of weakness in there. Therefore, I can't give Daniel Opare an 8pt for he fell short in this match. 6pts is my max.
Rashid Smailia and Jerry Akaminko, even though, made few mistakes throughout the match, they also held on and was able to handle the constant pressure upon them throughout the match. One of the inexperienced mistake nearly caused us a goal in the first half. This happened just at the eadge of the 18 line at the left side of our field. I don't blame them though. We all know thay are not that experienced. For that reason, I will consider them with 7pts each.
The midfield department was where all our problems rested.
Micheal Essien and Sulley Ali Muntari, who were suppossed to be the engine of the team, not because of the experience among the players, although, it is part of it, but basically the position they were tasked to handle, couldn't hold on to possessions. For a strange reason, they couldn't handle the presure from Aboutrika and his crew. I was shocked! That made me asked myself, can we handle the world if we can't handle a nation? I finally concluded with a statement, "it just wasn't their day."
Any way, I hand Essien with 6 pts. for he came around in the second half but wasn't one of his best.
Andrea Ayew was the worse player on the pitch, yesterday. His movements for possessions were uncalculated; his spacing to receive balls, wasn't the Dede I knew; his long range passess also were wrongly timed so it couldn't reach his intended team mates; his coming back to help the defence was a bit okay. I couldn't believe my eyes. For that, I give him 4pts because I know what he is capable of doing.
Asamoah Gyan coudn't get the balls he needed to execute. As soon as he got to the ball, two, three defenders were all over him. Majeed Waris should have taken advantage of that but he too couldn't due to lack of experience. Kevin came in just few minutes and for a reason that he was able to position himself with good timing, he was able to score. You see, a good attacker has to know how to separate himself from opponent's defense; he has to know when to get to the right position to receive; he has to know how to receive a pass, when and where to place the ball for the net to speak, goooooooooal! Watch Ibrahimovic in this areas. He is good at it.
Asamoah Gyan, I give him 8pt flat for his good assist and forceful attitude.
Majeed Warris was strugling though forceful. We will certainly need him in the WC. His 6pts given by the article, to me, it is right.
Wakaso timing to come into the match wasn't that successful like the last time. He brought is some stability at the left side of our field came in too little too late. Therefore his 6pts is fair.
I give Kevin 6pts and here are my reasons. He came in late and so it wasn't his fault. Secondly, Kevin Prince Boateng was showing the weaker side of him, which is his injury. That was his fault. He couldn't challenge balls when it was 50/50. It was good he wasn't positioned at the heart (Defensive Midfield) of the field like some folks were predicting. The number 9 jersey he had on, if it were in the olden days, it would have fitted him so well because, in those days, center forwards usually were not to come back but stays up for the ball. For today's formations, a striker is not supposed to stay one place. Unless he wants to be a #9 playing in the 60s, he would need to come, at least, at the middle of the field to collect a pass. He has to be involved during attacking like he did and eventually scored.
Here is his strongest side. As for his spacing, passed, receiving, possession, delevering, and timing, the guy is one of its kind. He reminds me of Roger Miller of Cameroon in the 90s, and as such can't be afford to leave behind when heading toward the big stage.
This was how I saw the match yeaterday.

Akwasi Appiah has been a good manager for sorting things out with Sulley, The Ayews, Essien, KPB. However, he needs to be more reactive. If somebody is having a bad day, change him immediately. Don't wait for the player to tell you to substitute him. If the game is tough, ask yourself why that is, and make some sensible changes before its too late. My best advice to the managers of the team is this: work on the defense. Ghana has 24 million people or so. I'm sure we can find good defenders. For now, our best defenders are Afful, Jonathan Mensah, Vorsah, and Akamenko. Maybe we can do better. Keep looking. I think Fatau is good, but needs some additional coaching on dealing with areal threats. Play lots of friendlies, and learn from the mistakes we make in those friendlies. We can win this cup with the players we have. The coach, technical team, and GFA need to do what they need to do. If we win the cup, I'll give them full credit.

When I saw the Ivory Coast team being led by an Ivorian coach recently, I felt so proud for him and his country. I wondered if that would ever happen with Ghana. Thank God it did happen and our own Kwesi Appiah has made history by leading us to the WC. It does not often get better than this. Congratulations to our own Kwesi Appiah and sincerely hope he gets his preparations under way in time and I believe Ghana will make serious waves in sunny Brazil come 2014. We done guys.

Egypt v Ghana: player ratings
by Taller UK: 20 November 2013, 06:59
Ghana made it to a third straight World Cup on Tuesday despite losing 2-1 to Egypt.
The play was characterized by large spells of Egyptian domination, with intermittent moments of goodness from the Black Stars.
Supersport.com's Gary Al-Smith rates the playersm who were generally not great.
Fatau Dauda - 6/10: He got the job done, but his dauy will be remembered for poor decision making, especially for the first goal from Amr Zaki. The Fatau of 2012 would have been sharper, but this version needs a club ASAP. That said, who can forget some of the point-blank saves he made?
Jerry Akaminko - 8/10: Short of one error or two, he probably had his best game for the national team. He anticipated situations superbly and was physically present on the ground and in the air.
Rashid Sumaila - 7/10: His potential has not been in doubt, but his temperament has. And in every game, he ticks another box. Egypt will remember him for some nerves, but he fought very well in the air and was not afraid to get his body in the way.
Harrison Afful - 5/10: Usually one of Ghana's brightest, he became the target to be tactically exploited by Bob Bradley. Egypt realized early that the experienced Abdel Shafy could bully him. Overlapped on the few occasions Kwadwo Asamoah was not in the picture and contributed an assist's assist for Ghana's goal.
Daniel Opare - 3/10: He would want to forget this one in a hurry. Was absolutely killed by Hazem Emam, who caused his yellow card, and the speedy Mohammed Salah. Opare will look at the video and notice he was the reason Gedo was played onside for egypt's second.
Michael Essien - 5/10: Quiet day for the Bison, surprisingly. Could not find his feet and miscued plenty balls. Essien was easy pickings for Egypt's central midfield pair of Aboutreika and Hossam Ghaly.
Sulley Muntari - 5/10: The start of the game - speedy, intense and end-to-end - did not put him in a good light. He elected to be on set-piece duty, which did not also turn up well. Like Essien, he was not comfortable on the ball.
Kwadwo Asamoah - 5/10: Another player who had a baffling game. The shine of his play came as he helped Harrison Afful with defensive duties. That aside, he overcooked things when simpler options were fine.
Andre Ayew - 4/10: Looked petrified in the first quarter hour in the hostile environment. Also guilty, like others, of poor play but his major sin was not tracking back.
Abdul Majeed Warris - 6/10: Without great service, the Russian-based man put in a good shift, running at balls and chasing them down.
Asamoah Gyan - 6/10: He gave Kevin-Prince a fine assist for the killer blow for Egypt, but was one of those who did not have a good game. Marking exactly ten years of Black Stars service came with a slow day at the office.
Substitutes
Mubarak Wakaso - 5/10: Yellow card was expected after he came on for Dede Ayew. Showed more energy and should start for the team next time.
Kevin-Prince Boateng - 6/10: Did great for the length of time he was on. The goal was a poacher's finish and a relief.
Emmanuel Agyeman-Badu: 5/10 - He has played as a sub in all his games this qualifying series. Did not impose himself on the game but his runs were needed to help those who were tired, especially in the middle.

Taller UK, I agree with your article more than I do with the main Ghanaweb article.
The main Ghanaweb article here has just been put on to create controversy between those who think KPB should be on the team and those who think not.
Your article is a much more balanced reflection of the game.
I think the low scores across the board reflects the fact that the stars felt they simply needed to turn up to qualify, and to be honest, we cannot fault them for that as they put in the hard work in the first leg.
I think Dauda came off his line too many times, yes he made some good interceptions, but for a lot of the game, he simply started running off his line before he had properly judged the flight of the ball. The first Egyptian goal was his fault in my opinion. He run off his line, flapped at the ball, the ball actually went past him as he flapped at it and HIT the Egyptian (was it Zaki?) to go into the goal.
Also agree with your rating of Harrison Afful. I didnt really see him in the game, and I wonder if those who demanded that Inkoom be taken off were happy with the alternative.
I disagree with your rating of Andre Ayew though....... he should have got a 5 or 6. Im not his greatest fan, but I do see him tracking back, and also pointing to others for his teammates to mark. I call him a "traffic director" because of that, but to be honest, he DOES track back. He needs to calm down on the rash tackles though (free kick which led to first goal was as a result of a tackle from him). I also think he needs to weigh in with some goals though. He scores week in, week out for Marseille, maybe plays in a different position, but I think he can and should be scoring goals for the Black Stars.

I will like to cogratulate the Stars but their last performance was very bad though the scoreline was fair to both sides to calm nerves. Before the match i suggested that KPBoateng should replace Majeed to start so Majeed could start from the bench just to change tactis but it fell on their deaf ears. Did you see what happened? Egyptians might have studied the Kumasi match to find solutions to all Akwasi Appiah's tactics and to find antidotes to them. See how they pressured the Stars and the Stars were only defendind to prevent more goals been scored by the Egyptians. Technical bench should be blamed for not changing tactics to counter attack. Some players themselves need to be blamed too..How can they be loosing the balls easily to their opponents? Was it a fear factor?..just a simple pass they can not give.."EBEI"..@ Our free flow soccer disappeared and needs to restored before world cup.
Our set pieces were very bad..Look at the number of free kicks we had but could not be translated into goals.
This defiecies should be rectified before the World Cup. @Goalkeeping was not the best Dauda made some technical mistakes and there is the need to try Kwarasey too.@Dan Opare needs to improve upon his performance..you can not give a back pass deep into the 18 when the presuure is still on..look at how Akaminko was struggled to save the situation @ Sulley Muntari must becareful tackling outside the penalty box because he likes heckling opponentswn, probably he is good at the wings than the midfield.@Kwasi Appiah has to line up more friendly international to improve upon our game before the world cup. Does Kwasi Appiah need a helping hand? These international friendly matches will tell.

As usual he appeared just in time to play in the world cup. And just wait and see if he will ever appear for a Ghana match after the world cup.
And it was totally unnecessary to point out that Coach Appiah is an Ashanti. The black stars represent the whole country. Grow up!

The English premier league is purportedly the best league in the world, why? Because it’s full of foreigners who bring their skills to the league which the whole world tunes into on a weekly basis. Ghana is fortunate to have its players playing in England and across the globe, these players like Michael Essien, who has been a bit part player for his club Chelsea, nevertheless has the confidence of the coach to involve him in these qualifiers. Essien was instrumental in the second goal in Kumasi when Ghana beat Egypt 6-1. As a Ghanaian I am not interested when the player or coach was born, as long as they can contribute to the success of the team and the joys of the country. There are too many 21st Century Ghanaians who still have 18th Century mentality. Over the last few weeks I have heard some ridiculous comment about K.P. Boateng, but he comes on as a sub and scores an important away goal which kills of the tie in favour of Ghana. We should all get behind our boys as they travel to Brazil in 2014. Here’s hoping for great things in Brazil. STOP MOANING PEOPLE…or get treatment for it!!

"ASHANTI BORN KWASI APPIAH:" What does the phrase mean? Couldn't the Author simply say Kwasi Appiah ? What a moron!
Stupid writer, what does he want to achieve by this type of Ashanti born writing. We should stop this type of divisional writing. At the end of the day we are or Ghanaians
Black stars did well in both legs. we now need to strategically plan very well for the world cup. with that I am sure we can go far in the world cup. the plays and the entire team need our support.
black star play nothing in EGYPT.there was a lapping at the mid field.and MUNTARY whateva is name is,wasnt supposed to be subtitued.sulley was playing well by holding down the egyptians.next time appiah should make good sub.
To lead, to be led, and to have lead; those are the questions
What's the relevance of 'Ashanti born' in this write up if not to stoke tribal sentiments I dare ask?
ALL THE PLAYERS MADE HISTORY.ASAMOAH KILLED MANY GHANAIANS IF YOU DONT KNOW.HE MADE PEOPLE SUFFER FROM HEART UP TILL NOW.STOP THE BIASE.
why the need to remind your readers where the coach comes from, ashanti born so what?sooner or later asantehehe will invite him to award him chieftaincy title.
WHY MENTION HIS TRIBE WE ARE ALL GHANAIANS,EVEN HE IS NOT ASHANTI HE IS FROM BRONG AHAFO REGION,KWASI IS FROM DOMAA AHENKRO AND MAXWELL FROM NKORANZA THE SAME B/A,WE ARE ALL GHANAIANS.
KWASI APPIA,MAXWELL KONADU,ASAMOAH GYAN ,KEVIN BOATENG,ALL OF THEM FROM B/A
So what if they are all from B/A? This is no less divisive than the writer's post.
