  Adongo, premature comments like your are the cause of our backwardness in the north. This contractor has never constructed any quality road anywhere. Instead of constructing a road to 4-inch thickness he usually colludes with the engineers and the officials to deliver a 1-inch thickness of road. And the result: the road deteriorates after just a few years.
  
  Having never had a tarred road before, there is every reason to jubilate that something is being done at all. What we don't realise is that the government has provided sufficient funds for us to get a 6-inch thick asphalted road but we are going to get a 1-inch paper-thin surface that will develop potholes before handover. And this road will develop impassable manholes before long and we will begin cursing government again.
  
  Adongo, our bane in the north is our own selves - the greed of our own brothers and sisters who pocket whatever is meant for the development of the north. Just look around and you will see endless examples.
  
  Until construction in the north is awarded to reputable foreign contractors money will only be going down the drain.
  
  And do you will notice that our road construction is usually divided into small lots for all manner of contractors: job for the boys? A good example is the Bolga-Bawku road construction which is divided into five contracts! This is a photocopy of what happened to the same road in just 1996-1998 and what has been the result just 15 years ago! So do you need to be a prophet to foretell that the end product will be sub-standard this time around?
  
  So long as we rely on the Alhajis for the construction of northern roads the north will continue to lag behind. But it is not difficult to conclude why our leaders prefer the Alhajis.
  
  Even northerners appointed to manage projects for the north end up pocketing all the funds and so no such project succeeds: URADEP, FASCOM, LACROSEP, TONO, VEA, BONTANAGA, NORTHERN GROWTH PROJECT, SADA ETC. None of these interventions were managed by a southerner - all were were messed up by the sons and daughters of the North. And we turn round to cry of underdevelopment and of being neglected.
  
  May be Adongo is very young and is not conversant with the economic history of the North! So please jubilate with caution. Your disappointment will be gargantuan.
