  A short, well-written article. Teachers who read it must feel proud and grateful. Such a commendatory piece could be a good recipe for teachers to work even harder. A feeling that there are a handful of well-meaning people out there who would devote time, energy and resources just to project the good works of teachers, to show appreciation. It's an unfortunate scenario where politicians, who've all passed through the hands of teachers, show little or no respect for them. When teachers have made requests for salary increment and things like that, we've heard these politicans barking like an angry bitch, and arguing that "We can't pay teachers anything more than they're asking for, because they're too many". But look at the many useless, clueless, idea-lacking parliamentarians sitting in parliament, arrogating to themselves very fat salaries that coming with other fringe benefits? Another group of people who see little in what teachers do, are those in the medical profession. They've placed themselves far, over and above teachers. When doctors strike today, people ask govt to act quickly because lives would be lost. With teachers, politicians would threaten with various academic sanctions, to the point that soldiers would be asked to go the classroom and teach.

  It's really amazing, my good friend. This is my second comment, pushing up the number to just 10, people who have commented on Emmanuel's brilliant, edifying, inspirational article. It's a sad, pathetic scenario that a good chunk of Ghanaians don't value the contributions being made by teachers. They hate to hear teachers complain about poor conditions of service. If it's the doctor, it's good, if it's the teacher, it's bad. So anything that seeks to project teachers in a good light, always receives very muted response from the general public, like this one. It's rather bogus issues involving NDC and NPP that generate hundreds of useless, stupid, unnecessary name-calling comments. The Ghanaian eye doesn't see good things to acknowledge and be thankful to them..

It took my mind back to the class-room where those dedicated souls stood before us close to the black-board, some of them almost invariably besmeared with chalk dust by the end of their lesson period doing whatever it took to inculcate in us the necessary discipline. Kudos to Teachers the world over. I hereby add my autograph to the postcard.

  BUT many HURT/CANE their pupils...WHY..is that not child abuse? do they think they will get away with it? Kudos to the good teachers who WANT their students to progress and boo hoo to the ones who don't

  Hurted? Is this name coined from the verb 'hurt'? Well, I know there is no word as 'hurted'. The past tense of 'hurt' doesn't change, it's still 'hurt'. OK, you can't expect all teachers to behave well, as we have in the saying that 'There is Mensah in every home'? There are bad parents, soldiers, policemen, doctors, pastors, etc . But the point is actually the level of impact that the good majority of any group has made. And teachers have played and are still playing such an invaluable role. There are few irresponsible ones who have left sour, bitter tastes in our mouths, yet it does not take away the shine, the beauty that this noble profession exudes. I perpetually remain thankful for lashes that I received one time or the other, which straightened me up for life. I would have turned into something else by now. It's good when the cane is judiciously used, with caution, in moderation, with the intent to correct, not hurt or abuse. GES has its code of ethics for teachers, and appropriate forms of punishment or sanctions commensurate with the offence, carefully laid out, are applied to the offending teacher.
