  Don't you see how our media houses always devote prime time to political discussions? BBC and CNN would rather devote such a time to discusing neutrnos and microbi in the gut and how they determine the lifespan of a person. What about GTV? They will always devote their breakfast shows to fashion shows, religious functions, poetry,music and dance and nothing else. No documentary on science and technology in the morning. What a pity.

  Well written article, Kofi. I thought this debate was untimely and unnecessary. Nelson Mandela's funeral rites are still on-going in South Africa - and here we are having heated debates about whether he is greater than Nkrumah. Very shameful of Ghanaians indeed! Both men are global icons, folks.

  Mandela rightfully, stood up against white oppression for as long as he could and eventually; he humanly tolerated everything just for the sake of peace in only South Africa without considering the dignity of all Africans against racism, oppression and mental enslavement. At that time he was considered by the same people praising him now.......as a terrorist. But to many, he was a freedom fighter!
  
  He eventually kowtowed for white minority say but, black majority rule. Which has kept many black South Africans still in bondage today.
  They are still suffering as we write.
  Most controls of the economy and financial gains are in the hands of the minority in South Africa today!
  He only saved South Africa from bloodshed not from white oppression. It still goes on there..............
  
  Osagyefo was against racism, colonialism, imperialism, oppression of the black race and believed that we can handle our own affairs, hence his overthrow to bring in puppets of imperialism and colonialism.
  
  Osagyefo stood for the dignity of ALL AFRICANS and laid positive foundations to be built upon.....but unfortunately, the AFROPEANS amongst us, have destroyed and derailed all his positive efforts and achievements through the efforts of their slave masters; and as such, we sadly remain mentally enslaved.
  
  Hence, reducing us to selling ourselves to all foreigners and continue to beg around the world for aid, whilst we are literally sitting on some of the world's richest natural resources and continue to import toothpicks from China??????
  
  It's so obvious to all AFRICANS, what Nkrumah stood for.....AFRICAN UNITY AND BLACK DIGNITY! PERIOD!

  This is reasonably sensible piece. You cannot compare two human beings of different historic era, fighting different causes, under different difficult circumstances, and with different visions. Both Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela achieved greatness for the African continent and their respective countries. They're both great and well-respected sons of Africa who left different incredible imprints on Africa.

  Thank you for a sensible piece. There is no need to compare as to who is (was) the greatest African? They both contributed immensely to the African Liberation struggle in different ways. Obviously in death we are able with hindsight to reflect on their lives and times. Let's honour both of them appropriately and let present day African leaders learn from their examples and sacrifices.

  1. What was and is the motive of the initiator of such an unhealthy debate? It is unhealthy because such a debate can generate in the end a rift between South Africa & Ghana.
  
  2. Why do we have to waste our precious man hours to just talk about such an issue - when there are more important things we need to dissipate our energies on?
  
  Please let us use our time for developmental issues and not on issues of comparisons of two sons of Africa who have departed.

  For his complete lack of understanding of contemporary African history, the liberation struggle and leadership in the struggle for emancipation of 'African Peoples' which even inspired Martin Lutherking's "American Dream" speech and aspirations,from which he Obama has benefited in no small way.
  
  Obama's eulogy of Mandela was way over the top as far as his characterisation of the 'stature' of Mandela was concerned and I believe that gave voice to those who wish to compare these incomparables, starting with Cameron Duodu, a known anti-Nkrumaist and anti-CPP journalist whose hatred for the Osagyefo dates back to the 1960s!!!
  
  You simply cannot compare these two greats because the sheer volume and scope of achievement is vastly different and the Osagyfo remains the 'Giant' of Africa and 'one of the most influential world leaders' in the 20th Century (from non other than a small West African country - which he and his mates named Ghana), to reflect the tenacity, industry and influence of an earlier Ghana Empire.

  There is absolutely no reason to compare these two great sons of Africa.Both Nkrumah and Mandela sought in their various ways to liberate the Blackman from the shackles of white exploitation,servitude and domination and both of them paid dearly with their lives.We have nothing to offer them but our love,respect and and honor. Yes,they both deserve to be honored and their lives studied and cherised.Have we forgotten how these two giants sacrificed their all just so,as Black people,we can gain a measure of respect at a time that most other races did not see Blacks as equals ? Whoever ignited this debate has done the African World a disservice and must be ashamed of him/her self. Africans we arevand Africans we shall forever be.GOD BLESS AFRICA and ALL AFRICANS.

  How can any Africa-born black person look-down on any African American? How many Africa-born, whom have moved to the US ,brought with them the open, direct knowledge of Africa? Too many closed, inward mindsets. I, here in the 3rd largest city in the US, with the second largest black population in the US...have not seen ONE storefront owned by an Africa-born black person which teaches African History or African Culture and her languages...not ONE!
  So don't throw stones when you live in a glass house.
  Plenty other folks from various continents have come to the US and teach their culture to outsiders eagerly (they know tourism helps their home economies). Plenty non-African languages abound in US schools. While West Africans, for example, living in the US usually use the term "akata" to describe African Americans. Like we are from no part of themselves. Such mindsets of denial are a degree of mental illness.
  As the great one, Mandela, would probably say, 'respect yourselves'!

  When did Cameron Duodu compare Nkrumah to Mandela? He just wrote what Mandela told him about his (Mandela's) attempt to see Nkrumah in the early sixties. NDC and lying go together.

  You forgot one significant difference: Nkrumah was for economic independence for Africa and africans; Mandella was happy to leave economic power in tact, untampered in white hands.

  Even after Nkrumah, Ghana is still left in white hands. Asks Money Gram and Western Union if such is not so? Black leadership simply takes bribes then store their funds in foreign white banks STILL!
