I dont normally respond to comments on my articles but I have decided to respond to a few comments today.
First, this article was designated as a rejoinder to Mr. Saybu's original which had the title "Is President Mahama a Northerner" but Ghanaweb has edited the title, taking out the word "REJOINDER".
Secondly, Mr. Akilu Sayibu is one the young political commentators that I really admire. I have read many of his articles, but in his original article with this same title, I believe that he mixed up the issues of policy, politics and personal. Thus the aim of my response is to divorce these things. There is no malice for Akilu.
Third, I believe that we should be able to analyse the actions and inactions of our leaders without adding the negative comments about their persons. In this way we separate the personal from the actions.

Dr Ahmed, you started a nice piece but ended up attacking the earlier writer by insinuating that his observation, thoughts and views in an earlier article issued was politically motivated. So I ask, what about you? Were you politically motivated and influenced to counter Mr Akilu's claims. Let stop attributing everything to politics. It was a nice critique by Mr Akilu, just like yours. Can't we debate some of these national issues in a non partisan manner without linking politics to it.

Mahama is a Ghanaian ,our president, our 1st citizen and therefore a "northerner" label should NEVER apply to him.He works for us all and is a symbol of our unity. To call him a northerner is foolish.

Government can play its role but as you have rightly pointed out, the citizens, including those who benefit (directly or indirectly) from government investment e.g. gtrainee teachers MUST also do their part.
As to criticisms of government policies and projects, it is important that we are critical of how resources are utilised and whether projects are value for money. Thus, I will be very critical of the Mahama government as far as the governance of SADA is concerned for after all as you again point out, he the president was an "architect of the SADA project". That being the case, you would have expected him to ensure that there is proper scrutiny, accountability and that the project was on the right course.
The question remains who were those put in charge and how are they accounting for their stewardship? As president, surely you will want your 'flagship policy' aimed at poverty reduction, boosting youth employment and emancipating especially the rural poor to flourish and be a success. Yes, it is true that natural forces e.g. poor rainfall (which we unfortunately rely too heavily on) can mess up many an agricultural project, however you cannot blame everything on others or the weather.
I quite agree with you that some people have chosen to address or explore these issues along partisan lines and therefore fail to (either intentionally or inadvertently) provide a more objective view and to assess 'success' amidst the 'disappointments' of e.g. 'slow progress of projects rather than their abject failure.
Like you, I would condemn those who allow their party colours to cloud their vision on matters pertaining to our national development. By the same token, I would hastily condemn those who seek to 'magnify' achievements by governm, ent when such achievements are not really tangible.
The long and short of it is that I personally would prefer that all sides of the political divide are honest, objective and fair, but apparently that is not 'politically expedient' in Ghana and in their eyes, will not 'win you votes'. What a pity and a shame that we view things like this. I am the kind of political observer and development enthusiast who refuse to see things in such partisan colourful terms damn the consequences!
