  He was just an opportunist trying to capitalize on the felt needs of the people. No wonder the voters didn't buy into his rabble-rousing.

  I have always wondered how Ghanaians want to get their country succeeding economically like the Asian Tigers - Singapore, South Korea etc. I am totally disappointed with Mohammed Dimbie's comment. What value has he added to the excellent article on an important issue like education, apart from denigrating the reputation of Akufo Addo, which is not what the writer wants Ghanaians to debate on? With people like Mohammed Dimbie perhaps enjoying the fruits of power at the Jubilee House we better forget about lifting our children up from the clutches of poverty on which they are limping. Can Mohammed enlighten us more on NDC's response to this excellent article?

  Families, communities, nations and the world at large become poorer for the one human mind not developed to its fullest potential through lack of education. We must always remember that what is making our lives more worth living - our cellular phones, our televisions, our aeroplanes etc etc are all products of the human mind. Deny a child quality education and society becomes poorer. I personally gave Nana Akufo Addo the credit for making free SHS as one of his top priorities in government, if he won power. And there were, I am sure, millions of Ghanaians who supported him on this. The majority's choice - John Mahama - should tell Ghanaians what his priorities are - wasting money on GYEEDA, SADA (phantom nkonfem), judgement debts etc or providing good education for all Ghanaian children?

  They speak of love, and the Lord Jesus Christ said, love your neighbor as yourself, and even love your enemies. Thinking about loving a person you hate, how does that be? What Jesus Christ was saying is that it is better to save or present salvation to your enemies or a person one hate than hating for cruelty sake. If not this explanation, how can a person love who the person hate? Just think about it. If I can say, then christianity in it true sense should be salvation only. If A PERSON can pray to move mountains, the person finally received salvation as results of praying in faith.

  This article is well-written, because, the writer appears to know what he is discussing. He has cited examples to show where well-planned childhood education has proved to be engines for economic growth. The proposal for free education may not be a bad idea, however, how to pay for it and how it is planned must fully be explained. It must be geared towards economic advancement, I believe.

  The article was well written . It is a pity most of the psosts do not understand what the writer was talking about. Cut out the politics . How does an agricultural country like Ghana not teach agricultural science all over the country with fishing and aqua culture in the areas near water bodies. Conservation is important but we neglect it. I went to one of the elite schools and taught in 2 of them but they had not subjects in business studies . How can we say ouir educational system is greared to economi growth

  This is an excellent piece. Our major problem in Ghana is exactly what you have diagnosed. The present system is only catering for about 20% of the 5-25 age group of the population. This has been going for at least the past twenty-five years or more. That means a whopping 80% of the adult population is functionally illiterate. It shows on Ghanaweb, radio and TV in Ghana, in the newspapers, the cabinet and parliament.
  
  The Auditor-General's annual reports to parliament has demonstrated it year after year in the past twenty years. Education is not only about the ability to barely read or add numbers. It must serve the wider community. GYEEDA, Isofoton, Mabey & Johnson, Ananegate, etc, were not just corrupt deals but simply symptons of poor upbringing and a porous education system.
  
  Yes, Nana Akufo-Addo's free education policy can work. As you rightly pointed out Singapore for instance, with no natural resources, not even land, has been able to do it! Cuba did it in ten years, again with much less natural endowment than Ghana. Nana's problem was that the NPP communication system is simply too feeble against a strident and dishonest propaganda by people who wish to maintain the status quo, because it allows them to steal and steal ad infinitum!

  I for one have always held the idea that our current educational system, where those who get lower grades are admitted into the Teacher Training Schools whilst the best graduating students opt for medicine, law, engineering, to name but a few, will get us nowhere. It baffles me a lot since these same average students graduate to become teachers and are expected to teach our children (the future of the Country) to fully understand what they couldn't understand when at that stage. As a country, i believe we have misplaced our priorities and the speed with which we produce half-baked graduates will not change any time soon if we do not change majority of our teachers. So far as the teaching profession is seen as a preserve for those who do not gain admission into our Universities, as a country, we will never have the best from our graduating students. CHANGE ALL THE INCOMPETENT TEACHERS and let the teaching profession be reserved for the best minds. If any profession has a right to higher salaries, it is the Teaching Profession. This is because they are expected to train all other professions. This is the solution to the educational problem.... my_point_of_view
