Citizens must take personal responsibility for their environment! Stop throwing rubbish on the ground. Bury it or hire someone to pick it up for your household! When you hire Zoom Lion or another contractor to pick it up at your house, pay your bill on time, so they can continue to pick it up for you. One company cannot keep the entire country clean! It is time to take personal responsibility for the land the Creator has given! That means if you are in a taxi and your water bag finishes, put it in your purse or pocket until you arrive home, rather than throwing it out the window ! It is called education! Stop expecting the government to do everything!

To the average Ghanian common sense doesnt apply as long as we pray, God will do everything.
Its a fact that the situation in Accra is so bad. I went to Gh 2012 and when strolling through some places in Accra I had to hold my breath. The entire city is filled with stench, smoke, dust, traffic, flies and especially around Kolebu.
The stench around Kolebu is enough to make one puke at once. Bus amazingly the average Ghanaian doesnt care, they go about daily life like there is no problem in the country.
There were times I asked if the country had a leader! Who is the president, is there a Mayor, are there MPs in Accra? What are they doing? And sadly no one cares. These so called Mayor and MPS simply gets away with loot for doing no work.
We are clearly not ready for democracy. The white man might have to come back.

As long as the big man has a house in East Legon and drives a 4x4 he doent care about what goes on in the rest of the city forgetting that eventually any outbreak of disease could engulf the entire nation including his East legon.
But as usual the Black man is not sophisticated enough to see this impending danger. He is very short sighted and has never planned for anything.

Yes, Accra stinks, and some of us knew that even as kids spending holidays in the 1960s in Accra. Whenever we crossed the Korle Lagoon at Abossey Okai, going to Accra Central or back to the house, we used to hold our noses!
And since we lived not far from Sabon Zongo, I was also aware of parts which stank due largely to the poor drainage system. BUT, in those days, even the Zongos were cleaned regularly and rubbish was not thrown everywhere like today. The Town Council sanitary workers ("Tangas")that the colonial authorities introduced and the Native Authorities that the grandparents of some of us ran, were still active and most feared up to 1966 at least.
The writer acknowl. that the problem is a recent aggravation, thanks largely to the pop. outstripping the inst'nal capacity to clear the rubbish. The problem is thus the failure of the persons in charge of the responsible institutions.
I recently read that 2500 tonnes of rubbish is generated in Accra daily but only 1500 is collected! I found the gap too wide to believe but it is clear contracting Zoomlion alone to clean Accra is not working. Something must give. New thinking and action is sorely needed.
Anyway, it is interesting to be grappling with this dirt issue in light of Forbes choosing Accra as the 2nd best city to live in in Africa, after Cape Town.

MARCUS, you just confirmed what Kwesi Atta Sakyi wrote in the article but you claimed what he said is not true. Is that not a contradiction?
The problem is not overpopulation but indiscipline and impunity in Ghana. Ghanaian authorities and law enforcement agencies are unable or unwilling to enforce laws, rules and regulations. That is the problem and without a culture of self-discipline, people dispose off waste anywhere. That is the source problem.
Instead of enforcing the laws, rules and regulations, once a group complains the authorities stop enforcement. For example, I heard the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive saying that they suspended the enforcement of not allowing hawkers on the pavement during the christams festivities and now the hawkers have continued to do so after the Christmas and New Year celebrations. The President also said, when market women appealed to him about the seizure of imitation wax from China, the action was suspended for the Christmas holidays. What stupidity is that? It's only in Ghana that law enforcement is suspended to allow citizens to break. the law. I hope the authorities will read Kwesi's article because he resides in Zambia and not in Europe or North America, so he is comparing like with like.

The problem in Ghana is indiscipline and wanton disregard of rules and regulations by the general population partly due to Rawlings and NDC politics. They point the newcomer to the beach, where everyone does their own thing. Our incompetent politicians do not enforce simple laws because they make unreasonable promises to all and sundry at election time and find themselves in a tight corner after elections.
In 1992, Rawlings promised the people of Teshie not to pull down their houses, even though they had been paid compensation for a dual carriageway. The result is the stifling gridlock in the area. ET Mensah promised not to move the hawkers on the streets of Accra and we know what is happening now.
In 2008 Wofa Atta promised to legalies "galamsey." The result is the devastation of the countryside. Ghana's stinky environment is all down to our clues, thieving politicians!

I believe Ghana needs to draw a comprehensive national sewerage and refuse recycling program that will involve input implementation and monitoring at all district and regional levels.
The indiscriminate disposal of refuse and human waste is causing serious health epidemic in Ghana. The city of Accra is a prime example; people literary go to the beaches esp. James Town areas just to ease themselves (men and women) into the sea, right on the rocky banks behind the slaughter house/light house areas. It seems the AMA and our city or govt. environmental and Tourist ministries don't give a damn about this horrible situation. This is completely an environmental pollution problem which needs immediate attention.
Hopefully, a new govt. will take the task upon itself to educate citizens of Ghana about the need for everyone to show some respect and commitment to obey and abide city and environmental rules to make Accra and other cities in the country clean and healthy place to live. Honestly, the horrible and unhygienic situation shouldn't be left as it is---it's an eyesore and a big disgrace.
What and how do we want the international community to see us; how do we promote our tourism? It's a big question we all have to find solutions or answers to, or address.

Dear Wofa Atta,
I read this excellent article.
Are you a teacher or an educationist?
I like the way you write.
If I were the Minister of Environment or Health in Ghana, I would do the following as the first step in addition to the suggestions in your article:
a) ban the black plastic bags
b) ban pure water in plastic bags
c) introduce operation clean up your area every first Saturday of the month like we had operation feed yourself in the 70s.
Please get in touch.
We may be able to make some impact even if we do not reside in Ghana.
Have a good Sunday.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I walk on the street of Accra for more than two hours holding water plastic sheet in my hand not knowing where to dump it.
A simple city council dust bin alone the road could have made the situation better and would have provided more than 50% solution.
Thank you once again Kwesi for raising this issue.

Other questions to the writer
1. Did you make any attempt to talk to a few officers of the metropolitan authority to know of their awareness and what they are intending to do to ameliorate the problem?
2. Do you have any statistics to back up your claim that Accra used to be the preferred destination of UN and multi-governmental organisations who no longer choose our capital city for their conferences?
3. What is the sanitary situation in Lusaka?
