First of, I must say that this is a well crafted and coherent piece. you have clearly asked several important questions that needs some critical answers. But in my opinion, there is another trend that the NPP needs to end. That trend is the automatic slot of a Vice Presidential candidate coming from the northern part of Ghana. The NPP has chose most if not all of their VP slots from the north but ALWAYS end up losing all three northern regions by huge margins. The time has come for the NPP to diversify and start choosing from other places. I for one will focus on either choosing a person from Greater Accra, Volta, or Central. this is because the North will NEVER vote NPP. but if the NPP puts other regions in play (mainly Volta or Greater Accra) then that will increase their margins. Kuffour won the presidency with roughly 14% of the Volta region vote, but Nana Addo has lost both elections without increasing on the 14% of the volta vote to about 16 or 17%. when you analyze votes in Greater Accra, the NPP has lost almost 3 percentage points since 2004. therefore, for the NPP to win the elections in 2016, they need to increase their margins to minimum 49% in Greater Accra, 16% in Volta Region, and about 50% of Central. this brings me back to my point of choosing candidates or VP candidates from the aforementioned regions just to make those regions competitive.
if only they paid attention to what the NDC has done, they will figure out that the NDC has only once chosen a person from the North as their VP candidate, and we all know that they have won 4 out of the 6 elections in the 4th republic. A word to a wise is enough.

The point you raised has brought to mind a very important issue which we have all along refused to accept in good faith and honsety. If we continue to believe that, we lost the election out of the ballot box, we can not and will not make any forward move. To most of us, Mahama genuinely won the elections. There was nothing like being vigilant at the polling stations and the rest. What need to do is to change our attitudes. We have too many people talking on behalf of the NPP which is not giving the party any good image. We have a very long way to go.It is not the issue of either Nana or Bawumia. Where lies the gurantee if we continue in this way!

Good afternoon, Katakyie. I have been waning to post an article on the analysis of NPP's/Nana Addo's defeat in 2012 but I have suspended it because of how Ghanaweb delays publishing my articles these days. I have to send them reminders before they are published and yet when they do, the articles are posted as later edition. A typical example is today. I e-mailed an article to them on Friday evening and had send a reminder yesterday and it was just posted a couple of minutes ago.
Well, for that reason, I may as well provide some of the analysis through your articles.
First, NPP/Nana Akufo-Addo's communication and especially how they responded to issues raised about him were part of the problem. Let me give a very good example.
I read in the Ghanaian media about a member of the NPP Communication's Team on a discussion programme claiming that Nana never went to Oxford but it was his father who did. That was when the reason's why he left Oxford was questioned. That made me send the FOI request to Oxford which I later made public through Ghanaweb.
When it became very clear that he went to Oxford after my publication, other reason such as his father wanted him to experience both the experience in UK and Ghana and that was why his father withdrew him from Oxford to continue his education at University of Ghana, etc. were given. That was an insult to the intelligence of Ghanaians because who will withdraw his child from Oxford University to Ghana just to experience the two educational cultures?
Finally, it was explained that when Nkrumah sacked his father as Chief Justice, he had some financial difficulties in sponsoring his son at Oxford.
Katakyie, what a missed golden opportunity for Nana Addo and NPP?
The last explanation was not only credible but also to the political advantage of Nana Addo. This is the candidate his opponents were portraying as someone born with a silver spoon in his mouth and did not understand the hardships Ghanaians go through. But this case meant that his family and he himself also experienced hardships like all other families in Ghana. Yet, by the time this reason was given so many unreliable reasons had been given that the damage had already been caused and put doubt in the minds of the indepenedent voter.
It appeared to me that people who spoke on this matter either did not know the facts or did not even try to ascertain the facts from Nana Addo himself and in so doing caused irreparable damage to his credibility.
There are other communications issues such as how the Free SHS Policy became centre stage when Nana Addo had earlier outlined what I call as national development or industrialization programme. What happened to that and why did NPP not incorporate the Free SHS as one of the planks of an overall policy programme but made it the main one? This was against the fact that and as you rightly pointed out, availability was another key issue for Ghanaians.
Again, how Nana Addo failed to respond to certain issues such "all die be die", and Kennedy Agyapong's incitement against Gas and Ewes. Had Nana Addo admitted that his all die be die was taken out of context but he is sorry for it, he would have been forgiven by Ghanaians and also Ghanaians would have accepted that after all, to err is human. His silence on Kennedy Agyapong's verbal incitement was very worrying. It showed that he could not sanction his party members as a leader. Do you remember Obama distancing himself from his former pastor when some video recording of him came out during the 2008 campaign? Again, Rumney also did the same when one Republican Congressman made a sexist comment.
The failure of Nana to act on these matter affected him because he lost votes from independent voters and not NPP and NDC. The party faithfuls had already made up their mind but the independent weigh the candidates before they finally decide. They are also most likely to be more educated and consider various factors including the two issues or public pronouncements of candidates and his party supporters.
The above also applies to sympathy votes. Such votes are most likely to come form the independent so if NPP selects Nana Addo and he repeats the same mistakes they will not gain any sympathy votes.
I am not convinced that many Ghanaian voters consider corruption in their voting decisions. This is because it appears to me that corruption is how Ghanaians survive. It's endemic and has become part and parcel of the Ghanaian culture.
Another reason is that, in my opinion NPP has this misguided belief that they can win elections through the judiciary. They wrongly or rightly assume that the judiciary is sympathetic to them because of the murder of the senior judges in 1982. Why do I say so? Just look at what Bawuamia said in the US and has just been reported on Ghanaweb today. Again, in 2008, NPP tried to secure victory by going to court to ask for an ex parte motion to stop the EC from declaring the final results, so they refused to take part in the 'third' round at Tain. Sadly, this plan failed because the High Court judge refused to consider the application on ex parte. It is also believed that NPP asked for a 24 hour delay in the declaration of the results by EC in 2012, with the intention of going to court to seek an injunction on the EC to stop it from declaring the results. Last but not the least, the three reliefs NPP sought at the SC that were rejected unanimously by the nine Justices clearly indicated that NPP either did not do their home work well or assumed it would be easy for them at the SC. For example, as you pointed out that NPP provided mobile phones to their agent to text declared constituency result to part Election HQ and the EC strong room, why did NPP not provide a single evidence of what was sent to the by way text from the party agents to the party Election HQ during the election petition?
I can go on and on but I have got an engagement so I end here.

The NPP has never been able to do that. They tend to be too complacent. Besides, the division that was caused by the split of 1979 has never really been healed. Unfortunately, these are entrenched positions, for otherwise why should anyone bother about Alan Cash who changes his mind like he changes his socks?
What has been his achievement in Ghanaian public life so far? The President's Cassave Initiative or his time at the embassy in Washington?Nothing to write home about.

Thanks for the article. I must however add that we need to look the two elections within the context of what was happening at the time. In 2008, Ghanaians were fed-up with the NPP and we must admit that. No candidate could have won it for the NPP. The fact remains that Mills had a sympathy votes and certain policies and statements in the last days of the Kufour Government did not help. Kufour's self-awarding medals was a campaign topic for the NDC. We talk about winning in only two regions as if we won more regions in 1992 and 1996?? In fact, in 2000,just like in 2008, Ghanaians were fed-up with Rawlings and that is why teh NPP won. Again, anyone that stood on the NPP ticket at the time would have won! In 2012, we shouldn't kid ourselves; Mahama didn't use just 4 months to win like we want to potray it. The paying of bribes and splashing of cash ensured that we registered a budget deficit about 12.5% of GDP. And that is why we are where we are. I don't see anything wrong with Akuffo-Addo. We forget that during the first round in 2008, Nana Addo won four regions. The main reason why we lost the Greater Accra Region was because of the La lands and because Kufour fired Ayikoi Otoo as Attorney General. In the Western and Central Region, it was a typical vote along tribal lines ... adze wo fie oye!!! Mahamah won the 2012 election because he bought it and it cost Ghanaians!!!

So the NPP deceived Ghanaians by petitioning the election results? Look no scientific analysis will convince me that the elections were fair. The elections were rigged, so why do you think Nana lost in a fair manner? Yes I agree that the NPP has to do its homework better in nominating the next flag bearer, but I think they have to know how to handle issues at the polling stations and follow up with every operations critically. Ghanaians vote in a stomach direction no matter what is involved, and that is what appeals to the NDC. If Ghanaians were to vote based on issues then believe me, the NDC will never win any election in Ghana. I personally don't see anything wrong with Nana for him to be blamed for the failure. However, I think it would be wrong for the NPP to make him the de facto flag bearer. Akuffo Addo believes in democracy and I don't think he has blocked others from competing. Whoever interested should be encouraged to stand and abide by the rules. All that is required of them is to convince the delegates which one of them is better to lead and solve the numerous problems confronting the populace. Backbiting will not help anyone of them. One thing the NPP should bear in mind is that the NDC will do everything unfair to win the next elections, so my word of caution to them is to develop strategies to monitor the election process from the very onset at all levels.

Where lies Nana Addo's so called popularity when the party's majority votes in six regions has been reduced to two regions. What is happening in NPP is very sad, the situation looks as if the Party belongs to Nana Addo and for that reason nobody should critized him. Anybody who raise an issue against Nana is an enemy. Where are the Council of elders and the Parliamentarians, are they saying that "AGE DOES NOT TAKE AWAY ANYTHING FROM HUMAN BEING"? I don't think Ghanaians will ever vote for a presidential candidate of 72yrs by 2016 to become a president. Ghana will need a President who will 24hours a day, seven days a week and not a President who will be visiting Europe day in and day out for Medical check ups. Please Nana should spare NPP another defeat, age has caught up with him and now is the time to take the back seat and allow the youth in the party to have their chance. The Council of Elders must act now , sit Nana Addo down and counsel him to retire to the Elders position and offer advice to the youth when needed.

Kwame Opoku, this is a well attempted and fairly balanced article. However, I woud like to make the following points-
1. Nana is not and has never be the most popular politician in Ghana since time immemorial. Is your assertion giving your age away?. You sound as if you are in your teens or a political infant in Ghana.
2. Nana has never distinguished himself in any sphere in his life(where is the proof). Unless you don't understand the meaning of the word- 'distinguish'. Could you be using the word loosely?
3. Nana failed x 2 elections as a presidential candidate same as JB Danquah who contested x2 elections as an MP in his own home town and did not win. He was beaten miserably despite his popularity in Kyebi.
4. In actual fact, Nana does not have any international/diplomatic experience more than any average government official or MP. He had very limited experience. So you suggestion is false.
5. Nana did not lose the x 2 elections under any bizarre circumstances. Ghanaians and particularly, those fair thinking NPPians know that Nana's personality, public perception about him, his tribal utterances, arrogance, lack of self-discipline and his false belief that Ghana presidency is a 'dynasty' therefore he must be the president by 'all die be die' did not help him. In addition, he is surrounded by violent, liars, lawless, corrupt, thieves and nation wreckers and political sycophants and parasites like Jake, owusu afriyie, Mpiani, Agyepong, awuku, adofo, kuranchie and co.
Also instead of NPP hammering on alternative constructive and practical proposal to build the nation and enhance progress and advancement, they spent valuable political time on Agbeshi Woyomeh's saga whilst the case was in court and unintelligently mounting insults and abuses on Prof. Mils. What a valuable and expensive time nicely wasted.
6. Sorry but 'you and I were not there' Nana has not yet produced his law certificate to any professional or an independent body for perusal so be careful your comment on this serious point.
7. Yes Ghanaians see NPP as a descendant of UP. And NPP behaviour and utterances proves this. Of course Nana's 'yen akan fo' and 'all die be die' and his public silence regarding Ken Agyepong's war chants about 'kill Ewes and Gas' before the election without any condemnation by Nana cannot be ignored as warmongering and ethnocentric.
7. Yes Mahama was abetter candidate without an aorta of doubt. Mahama is generally and politically more experienced with cabinet and vice presidency and now presidential. Mahama is academically more qualified and we know his school mates all the way to all his places of studies, home and abroad.
8. No Nana has never connected to the farmer, trotro drivers(only during the campaign when he rode in trotro for the propaganda). He only appeals to the rich and the Ghanaian upper and middle class with little acknowledgement to the .kaya yo', women, the vulnerable, poor and trders etc.
10. My view on Nana choosing Bawumias his running mate was ill-thought of and pre-mature poetically. I think Nana chose Bawumia not for his political experience despite the fact that there were quite good and vote winners in NPP to be his running mate but he chose Bawumia to spite Alan Kyeremanteng, Kufuor and co.
11. Yes, Nana was corrupt. You and I know about the Ghana passports and diplomatic visas being fucked out freely to dubious and unsavoury people some non-Ghanaians for money and favours. What about the drillship when Nana was the AG?. What about the missing cocaine (The Mahyia saga) and those ladies accused of cocaine but freed from custody under the orders of Nana the Attorney General?.
Kwame Opoku, Ghanaians are very intelligent and very well awake politically so be careful how you try to portray your history or your views. Please respect your readers.

HOW MUCH DID NANA FACTOR IN THE LOSS OF PARLIAMENTERY CANDIDATES/SEATS? CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME TO FIND OUT WHY THE NPP LOST SO MANY SEATS IN CENTRAL,EAST AND B/A? DO NOT BLAME NANA IN ALL THESE CASES. SEE HOW THE ELECTORAL COMMISSIONER CONDUCTED THE ELECTIONS AS WELL. IF THE NPP DOESN'T SEE TO WHAT GOES ON AT THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION, BELIEVE ME IT CAN NEVER WIN ANY ELECTION IN THE COUNTRY.

Thanks to former president Kuffour who sidelined V P Aliu Mahama and brought in Alan Cash which has created a big division in the NPP.These same people did not help Nana Addo, they rather stabbed him from behind. Apraku and others. Don't blame Nana,he is the candidate for 2016.
If John Mahama succeeds in getting Konadu Agyemang to stop her madness in 2016, Akuffo Addo will get less than 45% in a big knock out in the first round!!!
At NPP Congress in Sunyani in 1998, Presidential aspirant, Nana Akufo-Addo said “Anybody who becomes the NPP’s Presidential Candidate has already secured 30% of the total valid votes. The rest 20% plus 1, is what the cand ...

I used to read your write ups in the past and I enjoyed them. But not anymore. Election 2012 was rigged, big time. Get this in your cranium and get back on track!!!
Its amazing the way NPP and its supporters think. When they lost in 1996, they claimed they were cheated; and wrote the first "Stolen Verdict". When they lost in 2008; they claim to have been cheated. When they lost in 2012, ...

He is well aware of that! He said it himself in 1998. The NPP has more than 30% dogmatic supporters but they are not up to the required 50% + 1. To get that depends on the personal appeal of the candidate.
