With regard to the picture of Komla Dumor we can't even be sure of its authenticity in these days of photoshop magic. But whoever put that photo out there is an insensitive, uncouth, uncultured and ignorant individual. Many of us quietly kept our indignation inside. It's reassuring that somebody has finally spoken out what was on our minds.

In the first place, I doubt if Ghanaweb intended any malice, meanness or insensitivity. Dumor's acquaintance, Herbert Mensah, in his tribute, attached that picture and he also wouldn't have meant any harm.
On the contrary, people seeing this picture will be forewarned about the dangers of poor eating habits, lifestyle choices and obesity etc etc.
Many countries in the world are on a campaign to address the high increase in obesity and its attendant ill-health consequences e.g. high Blood Pressure and heart related diseases etc.
Komla Dumor's UNTIMELY death must be used as a mirror by both the youth and aged to do an introspection...re-examine our outlook on life, our choices, our attitudes, our habits...etc
We all get reckless in many ways, most times thoughtlessly. Engaging in unsafe sex, fast life, over-ambition detrimental to our health, not making time for leisure, exercise and rest etc...true it is all part of human living...Komla's death make have been predestined.. we will never know for sure.
However, such sudden death of a young brilliant individual(painful as it is to all reasoning and feeling humans) must be used as a wake-up call...an opprtunity, a reminder, for all of us to reflect over human weakness, vulnerability and fragility.
Let us face the reality of life - its quirkiness, and advise ourselves accordingly.
CAVEAT...I am not attributing Komla's death to a poor lifestle or bad choices...or anything of the sort. I am only saying his death must be seen as a WAKE-UP CALL.

Ghanaweb thrives on the most sensational articles which it poaches from other websites. The editors do not look properly at what they post - they do not edit. They probably put that pic of Dumor without a thought beyond the fact that it is a pic of Dumor. That is why it will be wrong for this writer to think that the editors have some hidden motives in the choice of the picture. Ghanaweb's editors are not journalists or broadcasters. They are not in competition with Komla Dumor. They have nothing to gain by tarnishing his name especially now that the man has passed away.
Accuse ghanaweb owners of lack of proper supervision but do not accuse them of having ill motives against the late broadcaster!!!

I sent a short tribute to Komla on Sunday night and it is still outstanding. I sent the same to Modernghana.com yesterday and within hours it was published.
LONTO-BOY, I agree with you that the editorial decision was not malicious. However, the first thing to hit me when I saw the picture was lifestyle. Then, I heard Mr Mensah almost complain that there was too much pressure on the late Komla, particularly working night shift. Then this morning BBC World Service reported that research by a UK university shows that people who do nigh shift are most likely to have diabetes (type 2) and die from stroke and heart attacks, etc. These really made me to question whether his heavy schedule could have been a factor. But that is irrelevant and too late.

Let me state categorically that I am not one of those run-of-the mill writers.....Ghanaweb has always published my pieces dating back to 2004...you are from all indications, a newcomer to this site...what is more, Kofi, I have been published so many times by my previous employer that I have lost count....if you have any doubts, avail me of your address email or snail-mail, and I will deluge you with newspaper clips of my stories....

Indeed, my title was an indication of me neither faulting your piece or Ghanaweb but admiring it open door policy. What I meant is that I respect them for publishing it despite the fact that the article was being critical of their action/omission whilst some other media may not have had the courage to publish an article that criticised it.
Yes, mky, I only found Ghanaweb late 2008 and posted my first article in 2010. So I am very new on Ghanaweb. I also believe the diversity of views and opinions expressed on Ghanaweb is perhaps, it strength and what make it unique and different from others though sometimes we could do without some of the abuses, insults and personal attacks. But that is my personal view.
I hope you did not misinterpret either my title or the contents of my comment as criticism of you or your article. Far from that. However, if that is how it came across to you, then I am sorry. I did not intend to make a critique of you or the contents of your article.
mky, there is no need for you to send me copies of your previous articles because I am not questioning your writing skills. To us Ghanaians especially, and black Africans as a whole, Komla was more than "just" a newscaster. Many African borns have worked in BBC over the years but none came as high as Komla. I don't think it was because Komla was necessarily better than all those Africans who came before him. Ghanaians who have worked in BBC include Ofeibia Quist Acton, Elizabeth Ohene herself, Dotse (?) and some others. They were not given the chance to read the World Service News on tv and radio. BBC didn't allow different accents on the World Service at that time. By Komla's time, other voices started to be heard on the World Service. I doubt if Komla would have gotten the same chance in the 1980s. I think Komla was lucky to have been given that chance and he acquitted himself well - very well. He had some experience of radio work before getting to the BBC but he improved considerably in the BBC too. The more assignments you are given, the greater chance you have to become better. And Komla became better and better and got better assignments - those even native born Brits with native accents couldn't get.
It is a personal tragedy for Komla that he died at the pinnacle of his career. At 41 he could have even climbed higher on the career ladder. And we all Ghanaians mourn his death.
In this world, talent alone may not be enough. You need luck or a lucky break. Komla had both.
But to be given a Ghanaian state medal? I think that will be too much. Some people are also saying he should be given a state funeral. That is also too much. Let us just mourn him and mourn our loss.

Much as it appears unsavoury to post this photo after his untimely demise, it is also educational for all of us. Consuming cholesterol laden animal fat may be a sign of good living, but good living is not necessarily a healthy life style. Much less is a work pattern which requires you to be awake and brisk at 2 am when the body mind and soul have to be in slumber rhythm with nature.
It is an unfortunate incidence but has to be put in perspective. He was a brilliant journalist, Yes! but the eulogy which is almost conferring sainthood is bothering on exaggeration.
