This shows you the level of violence your Christian compatriots have unleashed on innocent children of 'god'!
Christianity is built on violence, lies, slavery and imperialist, colonial domination - as Ghana culturally experiences today.
Europeans know this. This is why their people hardly go to church anymore. They've left this to Africans whom they rightly consign to 'ignorance, backwardness and superstition.'

The idea of one God was a borrowed idea from the Egyptians. The Jewish took this faith along with them after their departure. That the Bible has been polluted diluted and copied many times over has kept scholars always on their pulse. The notion that some parts of the Bible were included and other writers excluded like the Apocrypha, the books of Judas, Maria Magdalena (Madeleine) etc are best testimony and manifestations this mythos. Saul a militarist who became Paul never met Jesus but 70 percent of the New Testament was influenced by him. It was Paul who gave Christianity wings to fly.
The Bible (Latin: Library of Books) was not assembled until 365 AD when the Roman west and east merged in Constantinople today Istanbul the city of Turkey to put the bible together under the auspices and audacity of the pagan turned Christian. He ordered 79 year Jerome a scholar at that time to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek which left the Bible being falsely interpreted because Jerome was at overwhelmed so he had to make choices for words which sometimes did not apply. Jesus became Christ in Greek language. The Romans had no zero in the numbers which left so many calculations to be wrongly made.
If you come to think that the days of the week which we use to today are names of pagan Gods like Sunday for Sun God or Saturday for Saturn God or Thursday for the God of Thunder, Monday for the Moon etc then going to church on Sundays is like going to worship the Sun God. The months of the year similarly bare the names of Gods.. January for Janus God, March for Mars God and Zodiac names for April etc. The moon calenderer was only ten months until Julius Caesar named July after his name. Then Augustus the Roman king succeeded also said what Julius Caesar can do I can do better so August was named after Augustus.
Until 1534 when Henry VIII the King of England a womanizer had a row with the then Pope (The catalyst for this decision was the refusal of the Pope to annul the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon) and departed from the Catholic church to formed his own church which became the Church of England; the Anglican Church in England refused to change the British calendar which was based on Julian calender until 1752 in the 18th century when the British adopted the Gregorian Calendar. In that year of adoption a whole two weeks was canceled from the calendar so for example 14th September became 29th September. This meant or implied that all those who were born prior to this time have false date of birth. Like I mentioned the Romans did not zero in their numbers.
Look our world is full of untold stories and mysteries. There are so many legends and unknowns. The Americas became known to the western world only 500 years ago; Australia a bit later and the vast pacific and Asia was literally unknown to the western civilization. India and China have cultures and history which is older than our bible so how do we account and embed them in the Judeo-Christian myth and their perception of creation? Where do you place the world’s largest population of India and China? The Judeo-Christian myth also helped the Roman Catholic Church to perpetuate its waning influence. Today we know how popes are made. Cardinal Turkson a Ghanaian nearly became the pope of Rome.
It is said that religion is opium for the masses. It is really true. Today Ghanaians think they are more Christian than those who brought them the faith. Whereas the Churches are empty here in the western world; poor Ghanaians run to charlatan pastors for salvation and in the process get duped but are still relentless because they are religiously drunk and intoxicated. Even simple eclipse of the sun has become rocket science for religiously drunk Ghanaians. Ghanaians/Africans are high on religion which puts them in a state of hallucination and makes us vulnerable to outsiders. Smart guys have taken advantage of the ignorance of the people to exploit them. Even the presidents of Ghana are not exempted from buying into this charade. Clueless African leaders pay court to unscrupulous hostage takers who call themselves men of God which is why find ourselves in these abysmal economic conditions. How can a continent which is endowed with more than 54% of the wealth on this planet still remain so poor? Fancy that DRC alone can feed half of the world then you know how useless our leaders are. They have no vision.

The Bible is relevant as a good literature book whose themes, tropes and metaphors can help us clarify existence and give us a sense of proportion and direction. It is an eclectic work of art which embodies extensive myths and values from many parts of the world. A person finds in the Bible whatever he wants to find for whatever purpose he/she wants to accomplish.
Unfortunately, a survey of how we use that nice little book shows that we normally use it for ill. We strain to find whatever we want to find in it in order to accomplish our selfish agenda or validate our propensities for evil.
Everybody should read the Bible in order to be apprised of its beautiful narrative and object lessons. And we should write a sequel to it if we are so inclined or imaginative enough. It forms part of the corpus of world knowledge which may, like all good books, now and then serve as guidance in life. But to treat it as the unimpeachable word of god is the apogee of foolishness and the apotheosis of ignorance!
As for the ten commandments, I haven't seen a more incompetent set of laws anywhere else. Remember that the Decalogue only affirms status and prohibits the negative; i.e. it asks us not to do things which civilized societies already prohibit by the enactment of good laws. It does not tell us what to do right. Thus, you can be a very mean-spirited, passive person and still be on the good side of the ten commandments. To be a good citizen however will require a more affirmative conduct other than that prescribed by the ten commandments! Remember what Jesus told the rich man.

Kofi must really have a thick skin to broach such heresies. I fear for the insults, even curses, he's going to get today. Yet, I'm inspired to add my own take.
Only a couple of days ago, I was telling someone that Samson's strength had no more than divine origins than that of Aseebu Amanfi, also a man of enormous strength attributed to the gods of the Fantis. But even most Fantis know more about Samson than Aseebu Amanfi, although the stories surrounding them are both provincial myths meant to valorise a particular ethnic group's exploits and to inspire fear in the enemy camp.
Now, not only are many of these stories and personages in the Bible myths, the notion of a Supreme Being, of a Creator God, long existed in many cultures before Abraham "heard" a call from Yahweh. So had many cultures around the world a myth about how the world was created. The ancient Egyptians had at different times Atum, a self-engendered god who also had a divine son Ptah, or Amum, the god-transcendent. Water, the Earth or Mound (which came out of the water) and the Sun (which came out of the Mound) were the first creations.
In the ancient world, there were two major religious propensities. One was the tendency for individuals and nations to invent a god or gods as a means to understand the world around them or to gain fortune. An aspect of this was the tendency for politically-motivated individuals to invent or embrace one deity as a means of creating a new social order or controlling society. In such cases, fortune or victory was then attributed to this one-god, whose divine power then became rationalisation for the actions of those who invented it.
This is the case of the Abrahamic religions, Judaism and Islam. Both the Jews and Mohammedans massacred other people and stole their wealth (e.g. lands) in the name of Yahweh and Allah. Victory was attributed to their god, but defeat was attributed to sin against this god. Interestingly, though, the other side was saying the same thing, i.e. attributing their victory over the Jews to their own god.
It was also the case of Constantine, to whom great debt is owed for the spread of Christianity. Constantine embraced the Christian God at a time when his arch-rival Maxentius of the Eastern Roman Empire had set himself up as the defender of Roman religious practices and persecutor of Christians. Christianity became a state religion following Constantine's victory over Maxentius.
The second religious tendency in the ancient world was religious sycretisation, i.e. the tendency to borrow religious practices from other cultures into one's own. Thus, following Constantine's political conversion to Christianity, the Christian doctrine came to be understood through Roman religious understanding and acquired a distinctly Roman character. For example, the doctrine of the trinity has a distinctly pagan Roman origins. It was nowhere in Judaism. In fact, most of the Jews thought Jesus calling himself the Son of God was blasphemy. But the Roman Christians were very comfortable with it because the notion of a creator god and his divine son born unnaturally already existed in Roman mythology. Indeed, it was to pagan classical philosophy that St. Augustine would turn to fully develop the epistemology the doctrine of the trinity. So too already existed in Roman religious practice the symbolic eating and drinking of the blood of a saviour god (the cult of the Mithras).
Similarly syncretic was the adoption by the ancient Romans of the Greek Zeus or Jupiter as the creator god. Anyone, who has studied the texts of ancient Egyptian mythology would also be struck how so similar they are to much younger Old Testament texts. Not surprisingly, the Jews were enslaved in Egypt. It is typical for an enslaved or colonised people to embrace some of the religious practices or myths of the master race, as happened to Africans in the Americas and on the continent.
Sadly, however, we Africans appear not to have just embraced and adapted aspects of the colonising region, we have in fact embraced everything and forgotten our own. Yet, before we heard of Yahweh, we had Twedeampon Kwame, Nyame, Mawu, etc. Is Yahweh any better than Mawu? Or, are they one and the same? If they are, why do we think the way our ancestors worshipped him was wrong and must embrace a secondhand, in fact a third-handed (Romanised), Abrahamic religion as a our own? By so doing we have rejected our own culture and history and embraced a syncretised Greco-Roman-Judaic culture and history. This is precisely the effect the colonisers wanted to produce!
The worship of the creator god, the one supreme being, did not begin with the Jews and there is no need to accept their version. Interestingly, some in the early Roman Christian Church rejected the Jewish God of the Old Testament because he was thought to be too sadistic and amoral to be the father of Jesus, the Christ. Thus, the first compilation of the Christian Bible didn't include the Old Testament. However, this position couldn't be sustained, as the Christian Church still needed to justify its claim that the birth of the Christ was long foretold by prophets, that Christ's crucifixion was to be the ultimate sacrifice for the redemption of mankind, and that conquest in the name of God and the Christ was justified.
What we have as Christianity today is thus based on a mixture of Greek, Roman and Jewish religious myths and practices. There is nothing wrong with this. But where is our own addition to the foreign faith we have embraced?

Hello KIA, Your concern about abusive language has been my headache on Ghanaweb. Readers should google Sun Worship, or Mithra. Gbomo bi, the jews never built the pyramid. It is attributed to the ancient Egyptians. As to who they are currently is for the writers of certain historical events to explain. It is known that the Sphinx (please google it) had its nose destroyed by Napoleon Bopnaparte to hide its true racial origin. The origin of present day Jews is not much of a mystery. Some of us have read about the Balfour declaration.
As to the origin of the word bible, let me use French to point things out. A collection of books is known as a library. In French it BIBLIOTECH. Any Frenchman out there? So a collection of books being the word of God? I beg to differ.
With Islam, Mohammed never took off his footwear whenever he prayed. What I admire about him was his dislike for people who LIED!! Mohammed started what some of us today call a modern relationship, ie, a young person going for an elderly one. His first wife Kadidja was fifteen years older than he was, and a very rich widow. Some would argue that that he went in for the money.
If the pope is a political figure, what makes him the vicar of Christ? The word or name christ is from the Greek word christos, which means anointed or appointed. The name Jesus is hispanic in origin pronounced haysous which can be found especially in Mexico also pronounced Mehico.
Most Christians in our churches scare witches that at the mention of the name Jesus they (witches) run helter skelter. Why, some hustler in Mexico who is thinking of his daily bread?

No written account exists to factually back the Old Testament Bible up. There are some written human accounts of parts of the New Testament, but overall, the combined Bible was not ‘god’ ordained.'
You agree with me. You say, 'It is an eclectic work of art which embodies extensive myths and values.'
I am confident that no critic here can advance an iota of practical text to disprove what I have said; nor can they even give us a 'spiritual' sign, like asking their 'god'to darken the earth for an hour this coming Friday.
I don't personally think the so-called Ten Commandments is the most profound set of laws ever promulgated. I am glad you agree with me:

I neither believe in devils nor angels - I have already said they are mythical. I am agnostic.
I also agree with you that everyone must read the Bible, but only for its philosophical and ethical (not moral - because morality implies something already given as 'truth') correctional value.
Well I have read the entire Old Testament Bible. My conclusion: a comprehensive history of Jewish/Hebrew atrocities, betrayals, self-righteous judgements against the people of Canaan, Jericho, etc in the so-called 'Promised Land.'
Ghanaians/Africans need to research and codify our authentic cosmology. This must be situated in a national, science and technology-fuelled Development and Modernisation Programme model of socio-economics.

Just glancing through this script I found out that it was all about some myth, the Judeo-Christian myth of course. That tells me the writer has never read the bible itself before but some unkind commentaries about it. Myths are fiction and half truth and this idea is uncharacteristic of the bible because the bible deals with realities of life and even precise predictions of history and the future. Where did the writer get this idea that the bible is all able some myths from? Nobody has given the bible any privilege anywhere, anytime; but it is what people have come to believe and accept after encountering the spiritual truth in the holy book. Rather for most often times writers like this one have tried to throw dust into the eyes of some simple people by discouraging them through cynical writings to reject the bible. I declare that this same bible will judge this writer some day and very soon. For you shall know the truth and the truth that you know shall set you free.

Kofi Twentoh (of Winneba?), that's exactly what the Bible is, fiction and half truths. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't a useful book. In fact, it is probably the most useful compilation ever. Even the fictional accounts were fables meant to give moral lessons or help people understand the world around them. This was a longstanding tradition used by the Jews, one (story-telling) that Jesus himself deployed during his teachings. Unfortunately, today we take many of the fables in the Bible as true occurrences just because they include names of places that actually existed or are thought to have existed.

You are a very big liar, the dead sea scroll which contains all the books of the old testament is found to have existed as far back as 200BC. It is the oldest manuscript of any scripture ever discovered.
Again so far, there is no aceological findings any where to prove that man is older than 6000 years. And the bible does not tell us the age of the world. There are even some christians who believe the number of days that the six day within which the world was created is not literal as we can find elsewhere in the same bible, that a day is equal thousands of years before God.
Therefore, a day in the creation story represents a cycle which spans thousands of years.
Usually, the Lord discloses only an aspect of life that he wants us to know. If creation existed long before the world was destroyed and recreated, the fact that God remains silent on it does not invalidated what he disclosed in scripture.
Keep your atheist belief to yourself, as christianity does not order the killing of atheist or non believers.

Only about 40% of the texts of the Dead Sea Scrolls were found to be copies of the Hebrew Bible. The rest were mostly sectarian manuscripts.
If you're Christian, be careful of your references to ancient scrolls because there are some that might shake the very foundations of your Christian faith. Many texts found in such ancient scrolls, including those that talk of Jesus' marriage or contain stories that challenge the resurrection, were carefully excluded in the compilation of the mainstream Bible.
The Bible itself is a political (propaganda) document that valorises a particular version of Judaism and Christianity. Again this doesn't take anything away from its value. But knowing this will make you approach the Bible with critical humility, not with the rabid assurance of a fanatic. I like the way you ended, but you do realise, don't you, that not only do atheists have a right to free speech, but also they don't also order the killing of believers! Give them their due. By your actions you may win them over.

The dead sea scrolls are as perfect as the old testament as we have it today. Stop your islamic propaganda. Why do you hide your religious identity to attacks others if you think your own religious scriptures can stand the same criteria you apply on others?
The books that were excluded from the new testaments were written in the second and third centuries, sometimes by people who hated the gospel and wanted to create confusion. A very clear case is the so called Banabas gospel which was discovered a decade ago and believed to have been written by a Jew in the 15TH century domiciled in Europe, which even Muslims rejected even though it had Jesus prophesying about the coming of Mohammed because it contradicted their own scriptures.
Do you think those materials you are referring to are really good enough to shake the foundations of Christianity?
Why would anyone want to leave the eyewitnesses account written as early as 40AD for those materials you are referring to whose authors we don't even know?
The devil has done everything possible using people like you to discredit the word of God but they will never succeed because of the power in it.
You think we believe in it blindly? We have experienced God's power in it. Some of us not only hear the voice of God personally, but we have seen him physically with our eyes after believing the bible-God's word. That is what makes us the fanatics that we are.

"Some of us not only hear the voice of God personally, but we have seen him physically with our eyes after believing the bible-God's word...."
I'm sure even Moses and the prophets of old would be very jealous of you for seeing God PHYSICALLY with your eyes! But whom am I to challenge what only you have seen with your naked eyes. A lot of people see and hear things, you know!
By the way, I was referring to ancient scrolls that existed and were discovered before the early compilations of the Christian Bible but had to be discarded. Even among the Christians, several texts and beliefs about Christ were circulating until Constantine convened the First Council of Nicaea to try to foster consensus within Christendom. Even this did not end all the confusion. Indeed, the post-Reformation Protestants further discarded some texts included in the Bible compiled by the early Christian (Catholic) Church.
Again, saying all of this, acknowledging that some texts of scripture, including some of the texts found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, were discarded during the various compilations of the Bible doesn't take away anything from the Bible as the most authoritative moral guide. But then again what's the use of Biblical scholarship for someone who has already seen the face of God with his naked eyes!

And Gideon forgot about the many mistakes of trascription made by the monks who copied the Bible by hand under candle light. And the intentional insertions some of them made while copying to portray specific beliefs.

Who made those videos? It is simply people who think like him and have hatred for Christianity who developed such devilish means to destroy people's faith.
What tool did he use to research into the Bible for him to come out with what he claims to be factual?
Is this guy a geologist or archeologist ? Which tell did he use to prove his point.
Hatred for a religion is not enough for anyone to claim falsehood for that religion. Kofi of Africa, please, come again.

Kwesi Ghana,
Typical of religious zealots you generalise then attack me, 'I know this guy can only attack Christians. He should try it on Islam if he is a man. Or he is probably a disguised Moslem trying to throw dust on us.'
The fact are we don't know each other. Also, I am a critical agnostic (I am skeptical about the existence of God, but a true atheist). I am no Muslim.
Do you not know that by criticising Biblical mythology it implies direct criticism of Islam, as it's also based on similar Judeo-Christian dogma? That the difference between Christianity and Islam centres around the Christian claim that Jesus was a living son of 'god'?
You ask who made the videos and conclude it is by people like me. No the people there differ fundamentally in opinions. The video records a discourse between Christians, intellectual, Muslims, agnostics and atheists. So, the only evidence of ideological bias is yours, not mine.
Lastly you ask, 'What tool did he use to research into the Bible for him to come out with what he claims to be factual? Is this guy a geologist or archeologist?'
Well I have read the entire Old Testament Bible and most of the New Testament. My conclusion: a comprehensive history of Jewish/Hebrew atrocities, lies, myths, laments after fornications (Kings David, King Solomon) betrayals, self-righteous judgments, mostly against the people of Canaan, Jericho, etc in the so-called 'Promised Land.'
I have also used standard research methodology in the humanities – library book and Internet searches, watched DVDs and TV programmes.
Ghanaians/Africans need to research and codify our authentic cosmology. This must be situated in a national, science and technology-fuelled Development and Modernisation Programme model of socio-economics.
Relying on periodic idiotic Christian 'prophesies' from Duncan-Williams, Otabil, Joshuah, to develop and give us a high standard of living, amount, to a pie-in-the-sky wishfulness. Nothing will happen.
People should think more than simply have bland 'faith'!
Regards.

It seems Kofi of Africa is only now coming to this argument. It seems he has only now read Richard Dawkins or any real Biblical scholarship. He describes Francesca Stavrakopoulou as "the" leading expert on the Bible when she is just one of the experts and perhaps not even a very well known one. Kofi of Africa hasn't probably read of the others. He doesn't also know what people do when they study Religious Studies to an advanced level or when they go to divinity.
What Kofi writes here is not new. It has been known for centuries.
He should come back and tell us somtehing really new!!! His present account is too simplistic. He is no scholar of religions and probably doesn't know what makes religion tick - whether the Bible is factual or not.

Jones,
You fail to define and expose the specific arguments I make which you find 'simplistic.' To be taken serious in debate, one has to engage the issues, point-to-point.
Ironically the only simplistic point made is by you. This relates to when I state, 'Francesca Stavrakopoulou is the leading expert on the Bible and Christianity.'
My error, which I humbly acknowledge, is grammatical rather than a crucial one in discourse. It is clear I have already included other leading experts in the article - two which you acknowledge yourself in your weak criticism.
You charge, 'What Kofi writes here is not new. It has been known for centuries.'
I fail to see your argument. Are you seriously saying because some or all of what I have written is not original I should reinvent new facts? If they have so what?
Has everything you learnt at school not also repeats? Do you not understand the value of learning from valuable historical facts?
Do you not know that posts like mine aid public education and help us to defeat cultural ignorance, such as are largely contained in the colonising whiteman's Bible that has forced you dogmatically to abandon your own authentic religions?
Are you completely colonised mentally? Don't you know that Ghana/Africa must decolonise its mind by jettisoning all that are malevolent to our people?
It is completely infantile to expect me to reinvent the wheel of biblical scholarship.
It is not a serious point in debate to say I cannot historical discourse on a fresh platform in order to educate my African compatriots. You would have had a point if I had repeated myself.
I stated this from the unset, 'The aim of this article is to challenge people to examine the factual evidence that exists on the Bible, in order to discourse it intelligently rather than dogmatically or emotionally.'
Therefore it is ridiculous to expect me to deal with extraneous issues like, ''He doesn't also know what people do when they study Religious Studies to an advanced level or when they go to divinity.'
You display utter lack of didactic reasoning. How does it matter what ecclesiastical scholars at an advanced level do with their knowledge? Does it not suffice that I know what to do with mine?
The more I discourse publicly, the more I learn how near completely bankrupt Ghana/Africa's intellectual condition is.
Are you on intellectual crack or something?
