  when we have an ndc govt which prefers to waste state funds on fake judgement debts, bloated contract budgets, sole sourcing, buying vehicles for legon girls to campaign for ndc, overspending to the tune of 8.7 bn ghc or 4 billion dollars.....NDC GOVT DOES ALL THESE THINGS INSTEAD OF USING OUR SCARCE MONIES TO DEVELOP ROADS AND BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE TO FACILITATE AGRIC DEVT....IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS, IT BECOMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PRODUCE EFFICIENTLY IN ORDER TO BE COMPETITIVE ON THE GLOBAL MARKET..SO WHY WONT GHANAIAN INDUSTRIES FAIL TO COMPETE AGAINST THEIR INTERNATIONAL COUNTERPARTS?

  It is normal to think the members of ECOWAS, especially Ghana, was part of those who thought through and decided not to sign the pact. I rather wish to thank big brother Nigeria for "disappointing" the group because if not for her effort this agreement would have been concluded. i personally don't know the motivation of the leaders for wanting this agreement for the sub-region, if the illiterate farmer does not need an intellectual to tell him that the EPA is a bad idea. Kudos to actionaid but sorry to inform you that your leaders have signed the deal already. they actually went there with their pens in hand, to sign the pact. it is Nigeria that disappointed them. I assure you that they will sign it and damn the consequences because they have been promised Aid which they think is better than their tariffs under trade restriction.

  ECOWAS needs to go back to the drawing board and suggest a counter proposal wrapped around a vision to establish a TRANS-ECOWAS RAILWAY SYSTEM, with the purpose of creating formidable economies of scale for the subregion; targeted to boost the anemic productivity of the people of West Africa. This surely will solidify ECOWAS integration.

  I shudder to think of fledgling economies like West African countries' going into an agreement with EU on trade issues without these countries first solidifying their own trade relations, and opting to deal with EU as individual countries but not as a collective as EU positions itself.This is just simply stupid, and thanks to Nigeria. Nigeria should continue to provide the region with reasoned leadership and reject any deal which comes with conditionality and threats. The conditionality and threats clearly suggest that the terms of the agreement are not favourable to the threatened party and the only way to get that party to sign it is to impose a threat. This is a strategy that worked in the 18th century. Are our "enlightened leaders" of the 21st century saying that we are still in the 18th century and sign such a stupid agreement as our "unenlightened" leaders of the 18th century did? If there is any agreement that needs to be signed it should be an agreement between ECOWAS countries to strengthen trade among themselves first before signing an agreement with an external body like EU. For goodness sake, come October, the agreement with EU must be further deferred. Let's leave our region open for trade with all countries of the world, especially China, South America and Russia, and consolidate our position with structured trade and economic development polices that prioritizes intra-African trade.
