It's true, most Akans have no trouble with Ewes. And most Ewes have no trouble with Akans. Akans and Ewes have lived in the same towns in Ghana for years without each looking down on the other. Even outside Ghana, when travelling became the norm, Akans and Ewes live with each other without any problems. They work in he same places, shop in the same shops, go to the same barbers etc without any animosity. They may tease each other jovially but they do not denigrate each other.

It is only a few Akans like Okoampa who go on about this Ewe this, Ewe that thing.

And Okoampa does not even live in Ghana. He doesn't even know what is happening there. Okoampa left Ghana 30 years ago and has been living in New York all this time. Yet he thinks he knows how Ghanaians in Ghana of different tribes live.

In the early 1960s, as a ten year old lad, the son of a Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service in charge of the Jasikan Police Station, my peers and I and presumably every one in the town had a curious attachment to a fellow called Nimo.

The odd thing about this character was his knack to fill exercise books with neatly written sentences that made sense only to himself. One thing I can vouch for Nimo is his neat and beautiful handwriting, with the letters of each word nicely joined together, a feature of writing that was specially taught in schools those days under, WRITING.

With regularity, each week Nimo would complete three exercise books,or five, perhaps depending on the complexity of the subject matter. Whatever happened to the exercise books after completion, nobody ever found out, but sure as the sun rose and set, a new exercise book will mysteriously be in his possession on completion of an existing one.

Nimo was reputedly a very learned man who obtained a scholarship pre-independence Ghana to study overseas but had a mental breakdown. Knowledge gained must surely have an outlet either for good or bad so Nimo's knowledge found a way out through his copious writings. Naturally as a result of the human trait of associating, any time I see the outpourings of my learned friend,Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, the rewind button of my mind is activated.
