Senya, you claim in the article that the opposition will paint the government or NDC black to the voters. I think that is an insult to the intelligence of voters. Voters already know that the economy is in bad shape because they feel in their daily lives through increasing prices of goods and services (higher transport cost, dumsor, no water supplies, deteriorating health care services and educational facilities, non payment of and delay in public sector salaries and allowances, industrial unrests, etc, drastic depreciation of the cedi, etc.).
It's not only Seth Terkper who is obsessed with GIFMIS but the whole Mahama government. They claim public sector wage consumes between 70 to 90% of internally generated tax revenues. They also believe and rightly so that the public sector is full of ghost workers so the obsession with GIFMIS to reduce the public sector wage burden. However, they have forgotten that the economic mess they have created is more complex and multi-dimensional and therefore requires a holistic approach. In addition to GIFMIS, they must tackle the corruption and wastage through judgement debts, SADA, GYEEDA, SUBA, etc. The leakages in the tax collection with millions ending up in the pockets of officials and workers must be addressed. The abuses in tax relief for foreign companies that millions are lost by way of taxes must be ended through reforms. The public sector is overstaffed and must be reduced. Last but not the least, government incompetency such as the implementation of the VAT on non-core activities of banks should stop.
You cannot put all the blame on the Finance Minister. Mahama is equally, if not more responsible for the current economic mess.

I think Albert Senaya has diagnosed wrongly the cause of the illness of the Ghanaian economy. It is not the fault of Mr. Seth Tekper. You can bring all the economic experts to manage our economy but if government does not pay heed to their good pieces of counsel and allows people to loot with impunity, what can they do? I think some people are eying Tekper's post. It will amount to the same thing unless certain fundamentals are changed. Is Tekper the Attorney General to persecute those who have looted our national coffers with impunity? Corruption is the bane of our country. Is it Tekper's fault that Sada, Gyeeda, fraudulent judgment debts, and what have you have been mismanaged? Some of the human beings at some of the ministries, departments, and agencies need to be sacked for competent and selfless people to lead us or else the best economist would not even salvage the economy. If Government would not sacrifice political expediency for national development, then forget it. We all need to be a serious people or else with the level of greed in the system and the get rich syndrome without sweat, no smart minister of Finance and Economic Planning can salvage our economy.

Terkper is supremely competent. Too bad he's working with people who care more about winning the next elections through wasteful resource transfers than governing well. I'm afraid whatever Terkper does to plug the fiscal holes, which good effort is making him unpopular because democracies hate tax hikes, the NDC goons are going to create more holes. They're even asking for Terkper to be replaced with someone else who would allow them to have their way.

But working hard is not the same as working well and effectively.
The economy minister has a lot of influence in the direction in which the economy goes. But he's not supposed to be the sole generator of policy. He is only leading a team which he can influence but economic policy should be a team thing. That's why it will not be necessary for him to have a higher degree in economics. He will have such people on his team.
If he is sacked now, who will take his place and what will that person do that Terkper cannot now be told to do? After all, the next person will also be a party member or affiliate.
Unless the economy improves within the next year, Mahama is doomed - with or without Terkper. But sacking the man now will be an admission that the president has been working with the wrong team all along.
The pity of it all is that the NPP cannot do any better!

You will be fooling yourself if you think Terkper is the problem. He was handed a poisoned chalice by Mahama, Amissah-Arthur and Kwabena Duffour. They were the ones who broke into the bank vaults and stole all within. They were the ones who caused the high fiscal deficit of 2012 that has reverberated through the subsequent years.
It is quite clear that the nation is broke. Yet the government’s appetite for spending is not abating. Hence it is seeking revenue from every activity carried out in the economy. It is drastically cutting subsidies on utility prices (from GHS 1.3bn in 2013 to GHS 50m in 2014), that is affecting the poor. This is all to plug the hole created in 2012, which came about as a result of buying the elections.
Mahama can replace Terkper and the problems will not go away unless government expenditure (affecting the ruling classes and the MDAs) are also reduced. The high interest payments on massive loans contracted by this government will not go away. The wage bill will not go away; the only remedy is to restructure to improve productivity. The government lack thinkers who can do this.
I sympathise with you but the problem is not Terkper; it is Mahama. You are reaping what he sowed in 2012!

MAHAMA SHOULD SACK HIMSELF FIRST.HE IS THE COMMANDER AND CHIEF GHANA CORRUPT FORCES, NONNSENSE
Albert Senaya is likely to be a fool soldier whose bread is not being buttered.Definitely Terkper as an accountant would never open the govt chest for state money to be paid fool soldiers for no work.
P/NDC, by all accounts and considerations spanning back to Rawlings' PNDC days, has been a criminal entity sustained at the upper echelon by debased criminal minds and heads with the sole motive of using the State as the vehi ...

The odds are heavily against JM and NDC in 2016. NDC should forget about 2016. After every 2 terms of govt Ghanaians change govt. NDC 1992-2000, NPP 2000-2008 and NDC 2008-2016. NPP for 2016-2020.
How on earth can a country of 24million people rely on only 2million tax paying citizens to prop up a sick nation? How feasible can a government survive when it spend 70 percent of the revenue collected to pay 600,000 civil s ...

The problem is Mahama not Tekper. Sacking Tekper and retaining Mahama solves no problem. The problem needs a holistic solution and that must start with sacking Mahama.

be smart a huge deficit that was handed to him is the problem so do not blame the good man
Aboa like that!
Go and ask president Mahama Kofi DUBAI) which Gear he is using to govern now not Terkper!
Why can't the writer of this article not give us some clues? Everyone can give his/her advice to the government but I read here daily is only critiics. This canot help the nation.
SENEYA, PLS DON'T WASTE YOUR PRECIOUS TIME AND ENERGY TO TALK ABOUT THEM. THEY DON'T KNOW THAT THE GROUND IS HOT. THEY THINK THEY WILL GET THINGS THAT EASY LIKE THE WAY THEY HAD IT IN 2012.
Sacking the Finance minister will do nothing to help the situation. We need to consider going to the IMF for a bailout even if it means Ghananians will be made to live in austerity for the next 10years.
