Very interesting topic however, Joshua either forgot or deliberately left out one major claim of the Asantes.
That claim is that all tribal chiefs in Kumasi are allowed to participate in the meetings of the Kumasi Traditional Council which is never done anywhere in Ghana.
Also, they are allowed to participate in festival celebrations of the Asante people. I've seen tribal chiefs sitting in state with other Asante chiefs and the Otumfour on many occasions at Asante festivities.
Anyone who has lived in Kumasi for a long time will agree to this.
For the records, I'm not an Asante but I'm from the Upper East Region of Ghana.
I just chipped in to bring this truthful claim out but my advice is that we as Ghanaians should be celebrating our "Ghanaianess " rather than tribe. After all, our passports for international travels do not indicate our tribes but simply, Ghana.
That's what is important.

I personally do not subscribe to the claims that Asantes are more hospitable than all other ethnic groups in Ghana, although the evidence so far gives credence to that assertion. There are varied factors for other groups of people to migrate to other locations so I won't make that assertions when the socio-economic conditions in Kumasi vary from those in Central, Volta and the northern regions.

First of all, the writer exposed deep flaws in his argument by using Gas and Accra as examples in his arguments, in that there are many examples of excessive ethnocentric actions by Gas, mostly led by some of their political elites that negate his suggestions that Gas are hospitable.

It is on record that some Gas agitated for the renaming of Ohene Gyan Stadium to Accra Sports Stadium, whiles we all know that not a single person in Kumasi raised an issue with the naming of Kumasi Stadium to Baba Yara Stadium. We know of attempts made by some Ga youth and their chiefs to resist Otumfuo from building a mansion in Accra and some youth of Ga agitating in early 2009 for Kufuor to go back to Kumasi where he came from. Don't we constantly hear from the Gas that their lands have been taken away from them by Akans. In the past they used to point to Kwahus but in recent times Asantes have become their target. That is the difference between Ga hospitality and Asante hospitality! There are several other examples of Ga ethnocentric actions which I can menton but I think it is not very necessary for now.

As for Ewes, the least said about them the better. Even in tertiary institutions, you will often find them isolating themselves in class from other Ghanaians from other tribes. If you have had the experience of being a non-Ewe sharing a room with two Ewes, you will then be in the best position to describe them. The way they behave towards people from other tribes probably accounts for why many reject them. Though there are tribal mistrusts and stereotypes in Ghana.

I know for a fact that when northerners are in the mix of Akan and other tribes, they mingle easily, so are Gas but sadly that cannot be said about Ewes. Just for the record, I am half Ahanta and half Bono and I have lived most of my life in Kumasi.

Does it occur to you that some Ewes might be keeping to themselves 'cos of the open ethnic prejudices the likes of you "these Akans" express against them? Or, their women don't want to marry you Akans 'cos of your irrational "wofa" inheritance system which had made many a hardworking Ewe woman and her children destitutes?

Yes, you had lived most of your life in Kumasi and so is insular in your views. I have met Asantes here in London who had lived among Ewes in the VR; in fact, the Ewe parts of the VR. They are very adamant in saying that everything they had heard and believed about Ewes before going there were not true and that Ewes were the best pple to live among.

One of them who happened to be a son of a goldsmith claimed he went about buying old gold jewellery in the Anlo area in the 1980s and was nicknamed Sikaxoxo. From what he said, he knew the area better than most Anlos, including my poor self. He used to regale me with his exploits. "Even the fetish houses that they say you should take off your shirt before you enter, me I take off my shirt and enter," he said. No doubt he was so popular and received warmly wherever he went.

Of course, I know about Akan teachers posted to the VR in the 1970s who often arrived without any baggage, with only intent to scout the place first and return same day but ending up staying for days before returning to bring their belongings. Once there, they never want to leave!

The VR naturally/demographically has more mix of ethnic groups than any other region in Ghana; pple who see the VR as their home region, not migrates. But go to Ho and see how they all live peacefully together.

At the moment, even deep south of the VR, in Ketu South, their MP is called Fiifii Kwetey and their DCE Lamptey, obvious non-Ewe names.

Mensah's article is one of the best and interesting pieces I have read on Ghanaweb.

That aisde, I have challenged Justice Sarpong to pay my plane fare and other expenses for me to go to Ghana with him to verify my roots.

I have also asked him to get a cameraman to cover our travels as we tour Ghana to gather information on my ancetral parentage which he can post on Ghanaweb for all the world to see. I even forgot to add Youtube.

Instead, he's beating about the bush, making flimsy excuses. You can check "Stop Mournng The Ghost of A Dead Empire (2)" to read my challenge to him.

In fact, I have told him I will not respond to any of his comments until he proves me! This guy thinks I have time on mu hands to be bragging and making up stories like those Asantes I have been dealing with in my series!

Please tell him to go to Ghana with me to gather information. He's been runnning away from me since I challenged him to prove me wrong.

It is only in Ghana, where ironically English is a second language, that people laugh at spoken or written English errors.

Turn on a British television or radio an you would hear 'booms' as we called bad English in secondary school days.

I challenge any of Joshua's language stylistic critics on this forum to lay claim to mastery of flawless English in whatever form. Hypocrites!

Your way of thinking seems to suggest that one can't reason logically or engage in analysis with suspect English grammar. Are the Chinese, Koreans and Singaporeans, who currently top world education charts, taught lessons in English? No, they are not. Which suggests that we should give serious thought to a national Ghanaian language that will be the vehicle of education in our country. (I am aware of the opposing views and the heat that the slightest countenance of a national language generates, which can be debated on another forum.)

My friend, exposure is what helps people to cultivate hospitality. Ashanti by virtue of its position in the centre of the country saw more movement than other regions so they got exposed and appreciated other people for who they are. Accra being the capital and with our centralised economic and political organization becomes the most important destination in the country. So the Gas eventually become more exposed to many more cultures than other ethnic groups. People who are not exposed to other people out of curiosity and more out of ignorance may frown on or even ridicule other peoples' behaviour because of cultural differences. So the few examples of deviant behaviour you cited werea mark of the ignorance of the people rather than a function of which tribe they came from.
In kumasi the traditional system has accommodated the other tribes in that their chiefs sit in council with the Kumasi traditional council to represent the interests of their people and that augurs well for cohesion because communication from manhyia diffuses to the other communities through their chiefs. Sso in Kumasi it is more like a collaboration between the various tribes which begins with the understanding and the top of the communities. This collaboration and accommodation of other groups for a peaceful settlement is planned in Kumasi. As I said it may have evolved out of their experience with the interaction with many ethnic groups. Maybe the influx into Accra has been recent and has occurred too rapidly for such a system to develop but the bond of nationalism, intermarriages and other socially uniting forces have done the same.

Your article is good except that you misclassified Northerners when you said the zongos of Kumasi and Accra are inhabited by Northerners. This perhaps is because Zongorians are largely Muslims and the perception is that all Northerners are Muslims and every Muslim in Ghana is a Northerner.
I know the dynamics of the North very well because I was born and bread there. And for your information there are three regions in the North. The Upper East and West regions and the Northern region with its administration capital being Tamale. The Northern region is over 80 per cent muslim, the Upper East is only 30 per cent muslim and the Upper West has a muslim population of 25 per cent. So you can see that the Upper regions have a muslim minority like in Kumasi and Accra?
In terms of tribal affiliation in the North there are not less than 20 tribes up there and let me inform you that Hausa is not a Ghanaian language as most people think it is the language of Northern Ghanaians. Hausa is a tribe/language in Northern Nigeria.
The majority of Zongorians trace their roots to elsewhere other than the Northern regions of Ghana. Most often the few Northerners who live in the Zongos in the South are often Dagombas. The many different other tribes from the north would often settle in town with the indegenes. And let me also inform you that there are Zongos all over the Northern regions too. For example in Tamale we have Mosshi zongo and Saabonjida.
