Lazy Ghanaian officials trying to impress the overwhelmed citizens with gimmicks. If Mr.Kwesi Ahwoi really wants to educate Ghanaians about the true state affairs about Ghanaians living abroad, where is his figures about Canada and the United States?.In Canada alone more than 500 Ghanaians obtain Canadian Citizenships every year. That figure should scare him more than the stupid figures he was scaring Ghanaians with.

It was like the minister has nothing reasonable to say to the press hence this beating about the bush. I am not too sure if he was really giving us the real and true figures of Ghanaians who have changed their nationality. He should even be ashamed of himself to come out with that. Though I´m proud to be an E.U citizen, am equally proud to be a Ghanaian. One point the writer made which I think is of very important interest is the issue of Dual citizenship. What is the government doing about it? Ghana is always lacking behind when it comes to things of this nature and I wonder why. Even just go to any of the Ghanaians embassies to apply for a visa to come home, you would see how the embassy officials treat you. The moment they see you with your passport, you instanly become a target. Who would like to change his or nationality if conditions at home is fine? The minister should be ashamed of himself. There are thousands out there waiting for their foreign passports.

I have written on many issues to express opinions on pertinent problems of our country's development challenges, supporting the government and condemning it when necessary. In commenting on issues, I haven't hidden my preferences as far as the national interests are concerned.
Those who think that I am an NDC apologist can pleas themselves.
I needn't flog a dead horse here to say that I am not disposed toward the Danquah-Busia cabal for all that it is, having known it all these years since 1969 when I had the practical evidence of its invidious and insidious nature and seeing everything confirmed in the 2nd Republic and the era of Kufuor to convince me that it is not the kind of political cabal that I should be a part of. There is nothing wrong with my damning it for what I have seen it to be. At least, I have my constitutional right to go where I want to.
I haven't hidden my stance as a pro-Rawlings Ghanaian and will do all I can to defend that which is good about that phenomenon, even if I criticize it as a conscientious citizen.
Those who know me will agree with me that I cut any way in the interest of the "nation". I have taken on the Mahama-led administration at many levels to prove that I do a yeoman's job as a public intellectual. Those who choose not to see things beyond their noses will narrow things down to the kind of comment that I am compelled to respond to here.
Before the NDC and the NPP, there was Ghana; and Ghana will continue to be long after the NDC and NPP are gone. What reasonable beings have to bother about is the national interest, which is what I concern myself with. Fools narrowing everything down to partisan politics will wake up from their self-induced sleep to realize how stupid they've been all this while. That's why their low-brow comments don't matter to me.

Bokor your article shows clearly that you are one of those Ghanaians living in foreign lands who have out of spite for Ghana have chosen to be citizens of other countries. Those Ghanaians who adopt the citizenship of other countries are just unpatriotic .They consciously apply to be citizens of other nations, swear allegiance to their new nations, sing their national anthems and finally sign to renounce their Ghanaian citizenships.Do such people deserve to be considered for any high, sensitive position in Ghana? Are they true and loyal citizens of Ghana? Some even after acquiring such citizenships go further to make derogatory remarks about Ghana.Any Ghanaian who has turned his/her back on his country for any reason whatsoever is a traitor, must be ashamed and not be considered for any high profiled ,sensitive position in Ghana. So Bokor if you are a holder of the American passport then consider yourself as having betrayed your country Ghana. And so are all other Ghanaians who have renounced their Ghanaian citizenship for foreign ones. They are just unpatriotic Ghanaians!!!!Their loyalty to Ghana is a tainted one.

If I did not know any better I would have jumped to the conclusion you, Dr. Bokor, have been bought and sold like the fate that awaits most Ghanaians in the Diaspora; your self interest trumps that of country. Here are some facts for you to understand Micheal. Americans travel all over the world and have been doing so way longer than Ghanaians ever did and yet Americans do not give up their citizenship without a cause at every turn not even during American civil war era. Furthermore it is one thing to renounce your birth citizenship for self interest but it is another when those very same people try to have their cake and eat it by selling that infantile notion of dual citizenship to Ghana officials by virtue of parentage or birth lineage. There is nothing wrong with people deciding what is best for them and or their families but there is everything wrong in trying to pull a fast one on Ghanaians.
Americans, British, Germans, etc you name it have lived studied outside their respective nations and do return to contribute to the development of their respective nations; Ghanaians or Africans in general, do the opposite and yet expect conditions on the ground to change for the better. Those of you who return choose to expect the same wage scale upon return knowing that cannot be and thus resort to bribery corruption and underhanded activities at the expense of the majority of Ghanaians at the edged of human survival. Everything that has happened in Ghana and to Ghanaians that is bad has come at the hands of those who did train and receive their experiences outside Ghana and the common thread is greed and the me culture where amassing great riches is more important than morality of any religious kind. Tell me Dr. Bokor, which nation would those who have sworn allegiance to the flag of their new found nation fight to protect against all others in a dispute between Ghana and the USA, Ghana and UK, Ghana and Germany etc on issues of trade, politics or military skirmish? Do you think Americans take kindly to American citizens who do the bidding of or for another country against America? Why then should Ghana pull out all stops and bring out a red carpet treatment for ex-Ghanaians who willingly and knowingly denounce or renounce their Ghanaian citizenship only to export mostly trash into Ghana for quick bucks and as usual bribe officials at the harbor and ports so they do not have to pay taxes due? Would such acts be acceptable to people of worlds civilized and industrialized nations for which most Ghanaians have renounced their citizenship to become citizens?

First, know that I am a Ghanaian by birth and will remain so. If you have evidence that I have renounced my Ghanaian citizenship, provide it.
Second, it is possible that those renouncing their Ghanaian citizenship are doing so because they have found solace wherever they are and are driven by factors, mostly the economic one, to become citizens of those countries. But in truth, deep down them, they know that they remain rooted to Ghana. They visit home and are accepted as Ghanaians in reality.
Most of those I know who have naturalized don't hide the truth that they were driven by personal interests to naturalize so they can benefit widely from the system.
They eat both ways----remaining Ghanaians through and through and turning the other side as citizens of other countries.
Just remember that they enter and leave Ghana at will (especially if they can bribe the immigration guys at the entry/exit points).
Ghanaians are cunning people, remember!!

The objective way of looking at Dr. Bokor's argument is to analyze the extent to which those Ghanaians who have taken citizenship elsewhere have benefited Ghana. If, by their simple act of taking citizenship, they are doing a certain quantifiable harm to the motherland, then their action should be viewed askance. On the other hand, if, in spite of being citizens elsewhere, they are contributing meaningfully to the progress and development of Ghana, then they are as much patriotic Ghanaians as the typical Ghanaian.
It is my submission that most Ghanaians who have citizenship in other countries still love the motherland and do much for it. They establish huge businesses and properties in the country and help the citizens in many ways....more than they could do as Ghanaian citizens. Thus the mere act of taking citizenship elsewhere has nothing to do with the question of patriotism nor the truism of one's Ghanaianness. It has everything to do with the individual's choice and how much economic impact one can make on the country and its people.
Dr. Bokor's problem is in ascribing the malaise in Ghana as reasons why people take up citizenship in other countries. But even if all these problems were resolved at some future time, Ghanaians will still change their citizenship as and when they like. It is their intrinsic right to do so, and this inherent right has nothing to do with any wish to impugn the integrity of the sovereignty of Ghana, nor the circumstances prevailing therein. As I said before, they see a real advantage in doing better for Ghana and in Ghana with a foreign citizenship, and this fact is obvious upon scrutiny of what they do after they become citizens elsewhere: they never abandon the country and do their best for it.
People like Abeeku Mensah make several harsh accusations and set up spurious scenarios to condemn Ghanaian borns who take up citizenship elsewhere. They don't examine what these people do to help Ghana after they take up citizenship elsewhere. Neither are they concerned about the serious shame and harm perpetrated by Ghanaians against Ghana through home-grown corruption and ethnocentric posturing. Rather, they abstractly condemn a person for the mere act of having taken a different citizenship while they readily dismiss the benefits such an act inures to the motherland.
By the way, for those who don't know, dual citizenship is the law of the land, and any Ghanaian who wishes to be a Ghanaian citizen and a citizen of another country can do so through proper application.
