Please give the kids a break. When can they ever relax way from school and just PLAY?

Sir Arnold, I don't if you have ever lived outside Ghana. No, I mean ever lived in the West. There are some places outside Ghana that are far horrible! I grew up there and enjoyed some of their long vacation programs. I wish I could say most of their programs sine my GH father did not initially understand what it was all about. He being a typical Ghanaman kept us kids at home most of the long vac times. Our young neighbors would come banging on our door trying to find out what the heck were these Africans doing locked up all the time! We knew it was a bit abnormal but had to give all manner of excuses in trying to shield our parents' ignorance. I bet you these obroni kids can be damn smart. They knew we were lying! They would come begging our parents to allow us join them in their picnics, hunting, visiting the country side, etc. My parents exposed their ignorance by falling for our young neighbors' pressure. They had no option than to let us join our European friends and enjoy ourselves.
The white kids knew they had come to our rescue, since whenever we went out with them, we showed signs of freedom! Their parents were not stupid either. They used to watch us closely and noticed that our spirits were very very high. The question I also noticed they would ask themselves was "what is wrong with these Africans?"
My late father was a diplomat so we attended some very good schools out there. Such schools normally don't organize programs because a greater percent of the parents would rather organize expensive trips for the entire family. They would embark on cruise liners and stay on board a ship for days. Now, these kids used to notice that ALL the Africans in our school never had any adventurous stories to tell!! The Africans in the school came from Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, etc. There was something strange with the Arab kids! They never saw those stories as something worth brooding over. To them, it was normal. But to us blacks it was as if the world was being unfair to us.
Our kids need more than just school. Whenever I take my daughter out for a walk it is a learning process for the little student. She is given the liberty to ask any question, and I am ever ready to provide answers. I sometimes take along my binoculars. This should have been done by her school, but since it not forthcoming, I will have to take the initiative. Something funny I noticed whenever my daughter has the binoculars around her neck. Passersby would think I am some sort of a high ranking security officer training my daughter to take my place in future. I use the Bushnell type of binoculars (please google it) which are very powerful. The most worrying aspect of the walk is the way some passersby would look at my daughter and I with scorn. Now this is serious. Why, because such people will never ever see the need to improve the lives of their kids. Being a child to such backward people is a curse and I mean it!! My point is, should such children climb to leadership positions, You (not the backward type)and I know what will happen to unfortunate people under them. Being led by a timid person can be fatal to ANY business. Mark my words!
In this day and age, it seems some of our kids can operate our flat screen TVs, DVD players and some other latest gadgets, not because we think it is their time, but simply because we have copied the obroni in the same vein some kids are made to speak English at home. We should teach them to speak the truth just like the obroni.
We have failed to observe that a child's development is not only in their schools. Teaching our kids to lie is the most evil thing to do. We initiate our kids into lying the minute when a visitor is approaching the house, we ask the innocent child to tell the visitor daddy or mummy is not in! We then become furious when the same child lie to us parents. THIS HAS AFFECTED THE WHOLE COUNTRY. IT HAS BECOME A CULTURE!!! If we keep thinking that God has blessed Ghana, then please forget it if we keep training our children to look into the sky where God "resides" and lie.

I would have wished that all my children study science at the secondary school level before those who want to divert to other disciplines do so. With this in mind, I would have also wished that they always use the Long Vac period to learn music, fine art, carpentry or tailoring. The tight nature of our present academic calender gives me a course to worry. The Long Vac period is too short( 4weeks in most cases). I experienced the old system where I used the Long Vac to finish the chemistry syllabus because I never had a chemistry teacher. I also used my long vacs to do carpentry and so when I later did courses in petroleum production and drilling technologies I had no problem converting units from the imperial to SI units and vice versa. It also helped me appreciate the the practicality of mechanical stress analysis lessons. To me, our educational authorities should review our current educational system. After all, the major ingredients that were inherent in the current educational system have been lost. Before the advent of the current educational reform, we were told that the whole thing is going to be practical but now we are back to square one. There was also an entrance exam to be taken which has also vanished. Why do we then continue to uphold the current system when the engine that is supposed to drive it dysfunctional.
