The analytical tool employed to justify the withdrawal of book allowances should be employed against the President, MP's, judges and all other civil servants. If you do that, you will discover that none deserve what they are paid. Why then focus only on the lecturers?
And since when has it been the norm to vary the conditions of service of the politicians to their disadvantage? While parliament is busy increasing salaries and allowances of the politicians several times over, why must the poor lecturers' salary and allowance be technically reduced based on a standard that is not applied to other category of workers in Ghana?
Strictly speaking, nobody in Ghana will come up clean if you evaluate their salaries on the basis of the work they do; so why cite lecturers for scrutiny? The pittance they receive cannot be compared to their contemporaries elsewhere; therefore what they do should not be compared with their contemporaries elsewhere. They must be left alone.

Most of the lecturers in Ghana are lazy. They never want to write their own books for Ghanaians and other nationals to read. I think the Nigerians are doing much better in terms of writing and publishing books. In Ghana, lecturers or teachers are always embarking on strikes actions than teaching. There are some of them who never write a book in a decade and still collect book/research allowances. Shame to all those that engage in these practices. They accuses politicians for being corrupt and yet engage in similar corrupt practices.

Everything must start from somewhere. Starting from the lecturers and using it as an example, we can ruthlessly deal with the other workers notably the politicians.
We needn't just compare the lecturer's salaries with those of their counterparts elsewhere, but we must look at the work they're doing. For example, a teacher holding MPhil but handling over 300 students at SHS earns less than GH S 1000.00. In contrast, a lecturer at poly holding Msc and lecturing less than 200 students earns over GH S 3000.00.
The lecturer's fatter salary and allowances are grounded on his/her doing research and publishing books. Where're the books and research?

Brother this is the right spirit not street demonstrations that do not make sense. Many Ghanians do not work yet we are the first to ask for big allowances. Our Lectures are simply just stealing from poor students.

In any case, where are the books?

Mr Iddrisu, your effusions have betrayed your intelligence and shown how grossly ignorant of the issues you raise. I do not have enough time to respond to all the uniformed points you raise but for your information, kindly take your time and research about the BRA and you will bow your head in shame!! if you are a teacher, I daresay you don't deserve to teach if this is your attitude towards teaching. NO RESEARCH JUST HEARSAY!! WHAT A SHAME!!! YOU MUST BE GIVING YOUR STUDENTS APOOR FII (DIRTY AND OUTDATED FACTS). HOW MANY LECTURERS HAVE YOU SEEN WHO USE 1912 FACTS IN TEACHING? I WILL HAVE TIME FOR YOU! BUT YOU ARE SHAMELESS!!!

Academicians don't write as you did. Next time, say your side of the story and let people compare the two.
The '1912 lecture notes' is proverbially used. Probably, you interpreted it literally.
I'm waiting to read your rejoinder. You may call me if you wish. My name is IDRIS, and not Iddrisu.

I have taught at the University before and I can assure you that even way back in 1996, communication skills class in Cape Vars could hold as many as 300 students. Please don't diminish the work our lecturers do. You are a good example that they somehow get the job done.
And if you are serious about inventions, you too are a science scholar; how about developing new breed of guinea fowls for poultry farmers here in the south?

On what basis(factual evidence)do you assert that lecturers do not undertake enough research and publish their research findings. The 'fufu-pounding machine' you alluded to has been developed and replicated across the country waiting to see what corporate Ghana will want to do with it.Research abounds in all the tertiary institutions gathering dusts and you are here decrying the efforts of lecturers. Takoradi Polytechnic has developed a solar-powered canoe which runs solely on solar energy and has been showcased at many exhibitions but corporate Ghana seems to be oblivious of the existence of this beautiful invention. You did well by contrasting salaries but you failed woefully to contrast research output of lecturers against your ilk. This is a baseless piece for much of your hear-say-induced-facts lack scientific proof.

some of these lecturers cannot even link their lessons to practical applications. they teach and only entreat their students to pass the exams. only few( good ones ) are able to link their lessons to practical knowledge require at the industries. no wonder most university graduates lack the requisite knowledge for employment. Nowadays lecturers are concern about building houses and buying their cars; as for the student, you should return to your house and sit idle. Ghana is sufferimg just because no body has time for integrity.
