The fact that Brave Heart calls that particular aircraft 'my plane" does not mean the plane belongs to him. Every airforce pilot in any part of the world is assigned a plane. Some are allowed to write their names on it. If I wanted to, I could write Lt. A Gersis on the door. And so that aircraft is by technical definition "my plane." You see, mr. Bokor , a little education in a world of aviation is hazardous to your intellect.

You see Mr. Bokor, nestled between Takoradi and Accra, are other tenants, several squadrons of different aircrafts. We blast down the runway in full afterburner, a spectacle hard to ignore. And Good Old JJ is still the master of it all. Sometimes two thousand feet up, JJ and his wingman will shoot precision touch-and-go, a fingertip formation of birds that will scream down the runway center line. Sometimes he will break the classic military trafic entry; with each turn a five-G pull up with transonic vapor streaming above the wing roots, airspeed bleeding as the huge variable-geometry wings sweep forward, rolling out smoothly for the anticlimax of the downwind leg.

But you Bokor should not avoid at least a moment's glance upwards. This is the exquisite essence of modern military aviation.

Bokor, my bird is my plane so JJ has the right to call his berd his plane.

This story is an old one and some of us heard it years ago, way back in the '90s. It was a topic of discussion on Okyeame then, including her daughter Ezanetor also flying. JJ, no doubt, just mentioned it again in order to make a point, and the news is reported out of context.

But, am equally surprised by the fact that neither you nor Bokor could notice that JJ was speaking from a capacity of piloting point of view. Now, when a pilot is in control of any plane, then he or she owns the said plane until he or she landed that plane back safely on the ground and signed off.

That's a common term used in aviation by pilots and Boker as well as yourself should have known better. Ask any pilot around and they will confirm my rap. Well, am done here.

If you have the chance to read an article in SunSentinel published in February, 1999 when the Chairman visited the President Rawlings in the White House, you will know that old age is getting hold of Mr. Rawlings and his retention mind is slowing down. He seemed to have exagerated a little bit in the recent comment about Stevie Wonder piloting his plane.

Below is the news item culled from SunSentinel dated 27th February, 1999:-

During his toast in the East Room to Ghanian President Jerry John Rawlings on Wednesday night, President Clinton told Rawlings that he'd heard Stevie Wonder boast "that he had flown your airplane."

"I hope you had a seat belt," Clinton said to much laughter, The Washington Post reported. "With a story like that Wonder] might be running for president some day." Rawlings then rose to make his own toast. But first, he had to explain, "he actually did fly my plane."

When Wonder visited Rawlings in Ghana, Rawlings, a jet fighter pilot, took Wonder for a ride in his 10-seater. Wonder was in the co-pilot's seat. Rawlings took off down a narrow runway that runs along a cliff, then told Wonder to take over. Rawlings controlled the speed of the plane, but Wonder controlled the direction. "I would say right bank, left bank," Rawlings said. "The sensitivity of his hands was unbelievable."

After circling a few times, the plane headed back for the airstrip. Rawlings cut down the power and let Wonder land the plane. According to Rawlings, "Stevie said some people might think he wasn't blind".

The words "his plane" don't mean the plane was for him. Rawlings could lay his hand on any aircraft at that time without a word from any quarters. That was his time.

We have to brush aside this issue and think about the shattered economy which is of utmost important to every Ghanaian.

1. What are the ethical/professional protocols governing the handing over of controls of an aircraft by a pilot to people who do not have the requisite training, and was it followed in this case?
2.Was it a state-owned aircraft and if so who authorized that its controls be handed over to people with no training etc?
3. Rawlings mentions training one of his daughters to fly. Who authorized the use of the state-owned aircraft for this?
How our political leaders use state owned equipment, vehicles etc is a matter of importance for all of us, and should guide our future criticisms of leaders and how we hold them accountable.
