Dr SAS, I am not suggesting that if what Bugri-Naabu claimed to have done occurred only in Northern Region, then the whole election is in doubt because it would be unreasonable to do so on the basis of proportionality. However, I am of the view that if such tactics were widespread, then it could cast doubt either the election, the victory or the landslide.

The other objective of the article is to raise the important issue of free and fair elections not only within NPP or political parties but in Ghana as a whole. This is critical because Ghana just had a contested election through a petition at the Supreme Court and we all heard and saw some of the deficiencies within the electoral system. If after such a petition, a regional party leader could compell or forced delegates to vote in a particular way, then what lessons did the nation learn from the Supreme Court Petition?

Last but not the least, the question of democracy and the political party that is seen to be the leading light on democratic principles and accountability in Ghana with a regional chairman using such methods and publicly saying what he said. These are issues of national interests because such tactics in only one region in Ghana could cause another contested election and a potential conflict in Ghana, especially Northern region where differences of opinion on land and chieftaincy, coupled with party political interests turns into violence, loss of property and life. You may say that to extend matters this far is an exaggeration but it take just a mere spark of fire to cause uncontrollable fire disaster.

Regarding your question as to whether I used the logic in the petition, I think I have answered that in the first paragraph (reasonableness and proportionality), so the answer is emphatically no. In fact, I used "if" to qualify my analysis and conclusions and the title speaks for itself.

Dr SAS, I still believe that Nana Akufo-Addo will beat Alan in any contest and massively because he is the most popular politician in Ghana at the moment. However, that should not stop me from discussing matters that could have serious implications in the future. Would NPP or NDC not have complained had what Bugri-Naabu described occurred in the 2012 presidential election? Or are you suggesting the we should wait till it happens in 2016 before we discuss it?

Dr SAS, I do respect your views as well as your right to disagree and in fact, that is why I post articles so that I can learn from views expressed by others. But to simply describe my the reasoning and conclusions in the articles as, "we need both good education and good thinking in order to make progress in our country, but among our people, there is an abysmal hiatus between the two! Those who are educated don't think well, and those who think well are not educated", because you disagree is unfortunate, to say the least.

You may find the subject matter of the article or my line reasoning as "abysmal hiatus", but I can assure you that if days after the 2016 presidential elections, a regional chairman of either NPP or NDC comes out to make claims such as what Bugri-Naabu did, the other will raise hell in Ghana.

I do not see you as one of those who visit this forum to use abusive language because they disagree with views expressed but I must say that I am very disappointed with your last sentence. Coating it in good language or putting it rhetorically does not take away the insult. Why beat about the bush when you could have simply said, you are educated but can't think well.

It does not even rise to the level of coercion or force in the legal sense. You cannot go to court and argue that members were coerced or forced because they swore an oath to vote a certain way. They were not coerced or forced by any stretch of the imagination. They voluntarily took part in a stupid ritual which has no force of law. You may however argue that the election was rigged or that the results were skewed....if you have any evidence to support such a view.

You don't have to tell us what your article is about: your thrust is captured in your conclusion: "The confession or revelation by Bugri Naabu has not only damaged the said election, but puts a question mark on the results as well as damaged NPP’s credential as a party that believes in democracy and Ghana...."
This sweeping conclusion derived from a superstitious occurrence puts a question mark on your reasoning. So you would doubt the outcome of an election merely because some people swore an oath to vote a certain way?

3. Your article should have condemned Bugri-Naabu's infantile behavior and left the validity of the results intact. But you morphed the two issues and vacillated from your initial position. If you could be swayed by such foolish posturing, your wisdom is in doubt.
For your better understanding therefore, I will put my view more succinctly, " You are educated but cannot think well."

If you say that, compelling, coercing voters to vote for a particular candidate in a democratic country and there is nothing wrong with it and you call yourself educated and thinking well, that is fine.

With my education and inability to think well, I am still of the view that if what Bugri Naabu claimed to have done happened in any democratic country, it would have been investigated, and if found to be true he would be dealt with according law and the results for the region invalidated and a revote organised. Even if a revote does not happen, the effect would be negligible if the incident happened in only Northern Region

I stand by my statement that Bugri Naabu's claims casts doubt on the elections (whether it was free and fair) and damages the credentials of NPP as the leading democratic party in Ghana. I expected that from NDC and not NPP. I can tell you that Nana Akufo-Addo in his body soul and mind would be ashamed of Bugri Naabu's claims because he did not need that to win. He has only kept silent because, he will need him after securing the flabearership. Privately who knows what he will tell him (may give him a word of advice?).

For your information, we all cannot think in the same way that you do (even if we went to the same school college/university and have the same educational qualifications). BUT that does not mean that those who think differently from you are educated but cannot think well. As a person of the learned profession you should have known this because in your profession that is exactly what happens (the same subject/case, laws, case laws, etc) different Attorneys and Judges analyse, apply and reach different conclusions. Are your colleagues on the other side of the case in court educated and cannot think well just because they take a different view from you given the same facts on a case? Learn how to argue your case without insulting others. It is uncouth and unprofessional and did not expect an Attorney to behave the way you have.

Did Alan not receive Zero in the Central Region and did equally poorly in the Western region? Given the situation on the ground, I believe you are grabbing straws with this piece. Alan leaves the country after every election and applies for every international job that opens up. He then shows up during elections and expects to be rewarded for being absent. This will happen and explains his miserable showing at the polls. Bugri Naabu has nothing to do with this. I can assure you that Alan will not cross 8% in the October contest.

I, however, disagree with you on the other points raised. Extending this to Akufo Addo and examining the effect this might have on his election fortunes in 2016 is stretching it. It is quite clear that Bugri Naabu is an overzealous sycophant who would say anything. There are people like that in every political party. He will learn from what has happened.

If you wanted to tar Akufo Addo with this statement, you should have discussed the justifications given by Bugri Naabu in making that statement. He said all the executives used the name of Akufo Addo to win their positions and not to vote for him was a betrayal. This claim has come up time and time again even to the extent that the party grassroots are saying that Chairman Afoko used this same ploy. In other words, the new executives from polling stations to national level benefited from using Akufo Addo’s name. They faulted the last executive for not working hard to make Akufo Addo President; and their promise was therefore to help Akufo Addo this time round. So the immature, which I include Bugri Naabu, saw the voting for other contestants as a betrayal. It is, however, stretching it to draw Akufo Addo into some sort of coercive conspiracy theory.

There is always a temptation to use western standards to analyse local African politics. The two are not the same. We have had chiefs promising 100% votes in a certain region for a certain politician. This had no adverse impact. We had Daniel Ohene Agyekum using the Antoa deity to intimidate people to vote for the NDC in the Ashanti region; this had no adverse effect on NDC fortunes nationally. However you see an isolated pronouncement by an overzealous party chairman as exposing the dark side of Akufo Addo and think that this would affect his chances, nationally, in 2016. This will soon blow over and I do not share in your analysis.

Our political parties do engage in all sorts of shady manoeuvring, and in my view, the NPP does less of this. This explains why the NDC wins tight elections on wafer-thin majorities. Maybe if the NPP were to be adept at this, we would have been discussing an NPP victory in 2012. Bugri Naabu needs to be condemned alright but I will not bring Akufo Addo into his shenanigans.

The main objective is to open up debate on democracy and democratic principles within the wider context of Ghanaian elections. The other is to caution political parties, especially, NPP and NDC that the tactics described by Bugri-Naabu could not be replicated on a national scale and therefore if such plans are being contemplated, be warned. It is particularly difficult for the opposition to be successful in implementing it in a national election.

I appreciate your concern for western standards being applied to judge Ghanaian culture, customs and practices. That is not what I sought to do, though I mentioned religious and traditional beliefs but they were within the context of democratic principles of free and fair elections and the right of the individual to make a free choice, which I believe is a western concept. However, since Ghana is practicing western democracy, we have no other choice but to use western standards as a measure to judge how best Ghana is doing. In fact, had Buri-Naabu said what he said in the UK, US, Canada or any developed democracy, he would have been in trouble with the law. For example, some Labour politicians of Asian origin were tried and jailed in the UK for compelling or influencing some voters of Asian origin to vote massively for them (through postal ballot) in a local election.

The other reason is to discuss some of the practices in Ghana where Daniel Ohene Agyekum and others use scare mongering tactics to force voters to vote for them. Such practices should have no place in a democracy, even if they are not effective. They should be wrong wherever they come from and such people should be dealt with according to the laws of the country. Sadly, in Ghana laws do not apply to Ohene Agyekum, Bugri-Naabu and their cohorts and that is why the country is lacking behind in development. Apart from hearing this matter discussed on Citi FM yesterday, I am not sure it's being discussed anywhere. Probably, Ghanaians would wait till there is a problem after the 2016 elections before discussing it or going to the court to seek solutions.

You are right, I have no evidence to suggest that Nana Akufo-Addo has anything to do with what Bugri Naabu said or did. If anything, Bugri-Naabu's actions were misguided enthusiasm to ensure victory for Nana Akufo-Addo and in doing so ended up courting controversy

Until Tuesday, September 9, 2014, I've lived under the false impression that the anti-Akuffo Addo/NPP coalition within the NDC had taken a well deserved time out to look inward for a change and eke out the orgy of failed leadership that has bedeviled their party and the nation.
Suddenly, they're engaged in a flurry of activity and its purpose? Hog-tie Akuffo Addo and the NPP before 2016. There's such a void in real leadership in Ghana that you'd expect they'll take extreme measures to make themself look relevant.
The purported statement by the Northern Region Chairman of the NPP, Alhaji Bugri Naabu, is churlish and idiotic but more importantly, it udermines the tenets of democracy. There has to be a full investigation to establish the facts of the momentous occurence and its portentous consequences and hold fresh elections if proven to be true.
But let not ignorance and thoughtlessness lead anyone into the error of assuming this is not an isolated happenstance but a widespread orchestration of electoral coercion and fraud.
My question to the NDC is: "do they ever rise above those under their condemnation"?
As for Mr Kofi Atta, my advice is : "never forget that thinking aloud on a piece of paper about Nana Akuffo Addo's foibles is silver but your silence is pure gold.

Kofi Ata, I think your article is poor if it is based on the analysis of the above information. We are not talking about 1% or 5% or even 10% point lead over his closest rival but a difference of over 70%. Statistically even if given a margin of error of 15% Alan could not even get close enough to have doubts over the results. Why dont you guys just accept that Nana is the candidate the majority of NPP members want, throw in the towel live to fight another day. The way Alan is carrying on is having a detrimental effect on his future prospects because Dr Bawumiah is becoming more popular the more Alan drags on. Being a Presidential candidate is a privilege and not a right so the earlier Alan and his followers learnt this the better it would be for them.

MASSA KOFI, my answer to your question is that, it looks like you're stretching Mr Bugri Naabu's incredible stupidity and irresponsible behaviour too far. Clearly, Bugri Naabu comes across as a very controversial and divisive figure, bearing in mind, his claims and statements.

I think Mr Bugri Naabu, by making those claims and statements wanted to be seen as a loyal and staunch supporter of Nana Akufo-Addo. I believe Nana Akufo-Addo worked hard to secure that strong endorsement of his leadership candidacy. The vote was fair and transparent. Regard Bugri Naabu's claims as complete nonsense, unless you believe somehow, those claims cast doubt over Nana Akufo-Addo's decency and integrity.

LONTO-BOY, I have no reason to suspect or believe that Nana Akufo-Addo was even directly or indirectly aware of Bugri Naabu's claims, let alone cast doubt on his decency and integrity. However, if what Bugri Naabu claimed to have done was widespread, then, it casts doubt on the elections, particularly the landslide victory. I am also of the view that in the minds of others, especially, the Alan Team there will always be some doubt in their minds about the election results.

Moreover, I am personally disappointed that a party such as NPP that I expect more from when it comes to democratic credentials would have such a person (Regional Chairman) behaved the way he did. Perhaps, as a friend of mine tells me, I give too much credit to NPP on this matter whilst I see NDC as less democratic. Again, maybe as Yaw said in his comment, I am using standards here to judge Ghanaian politics. Nonetheless, I am sure if this had happened in a national election by either of the two leading parties the other would cry foul. In other words, if it would not be acceptable in national elections it should be unacceptable in any election.

I know that there are people in both Alan and Nana's camps that would do anything to ensure victory for their man and Bugri Naabu is one of such supporters. These people risk even damaging their candidate (as Katakyie has been doing on Ghanaweb) with their actions and omissions.

Interestingly, Bugri Naabu seems to have got away with murder by issuing that withdrawal statement which was cleverly written, probably by a lawyer.

If Nana could go to the Supreme Court to have results canceleed, I don't see why he cannot do this to safe the party and his candidacy.
