  Kudos to Dr. Arthur Kennedy for a yeoman’s article on Ebola, which is devoid of the usual politics associated with him. His clarion call for preparedness and contact-tracing is well meant – but one strong doubt needs to be answered by microbiologist, medical researchers and other scientists. Indeed, we have all been made to understand that bodily fluids and other direct contacts are the modus operanti of the transmission and infection by the Ebola virus. Like previous controversies which centered on whether mosquitoes could also be culpable for the Aids transmission – which was roundly disproved to the delight of most - that the volume of blood/fluid carried by the mosquito was said to be too minimal in volume to be of any effect in the aids transmission.
  Another controversy may need to be answered about the currency of use in transaction by all – both paper and coins. We all know the appalling disregard of hygiene in collecting, keeping and the issuance of change after transaction by our traders and other members of the public; it can be easily noted that this lack of hygiene could do us in on Ebola transmission. So, what could be the possible remedies for the exchange of paper notes and coins? Payment of transactions with credit cards is in its infancy in Ghana and the sub-region, compared to other advanced economies. How about wholesale use of mobile accounts or e-money for payments and other transactions, like the M-pesa system in Kenya? Our IT experts and banks, and indeed government, must put measures in place to encourage the rapid development of an Mpesa-like system in Ghana; this would even aid our economy by minimizing the availability of cash and other related crimes associated with cash commerce. Let us move forward towards a cashless economy - after all, we now proclaim ourselves to be a lower middle income country!
