Ghana is always hard under both previous governments. Corruption is there since Adam and Eve .Dumsor has been there as well as water and sanitation problems among others there. The questions is -has the government been trying to address these issues? Big yes. Incumbency and its huge advantages are there. Akufo Addo's chances are therefore very thin. If it had been after Mahama's second term in 2020 it would have favoured Nana. What about his age? NPP should not behave that it's not going to be an issue is a joke. Two years is quite long and things can change because the Mahama's government is trying to solve the problems and about the going for IMF is trash.Kuffuor sent Ghana to HIPC and yet was returned. Ghana is a member of the IMF and has access to it in times of financial difficulties and so is no point. The big question for Nana is what is he going to tell Ghanaians to convince them? Is Mahama not doing those things already? December 2016 will tell.

IN DOING YOUR ANALYSIS, YOU FAILED TO RECOGNIZE THAT THERE IS NO WAY A "JOHN" AND ANY OTHER CANDIDATE WILL CONTEST AND THE OTHER WILL WIN. WE ALL KNOW THAT THE JOHNS' ALWAYS WIN ELECTIONS IN GHANA.

The hidden secret unbeknownst to many is that the name Kufuor is the Asante variation of the Akuapem/Akyem name "Akuffo". There have been four "Johns" and the fourth "Akuffo" is waiting to assume office in 2016.
Now there, I can also perform some magic with names!

Kofi I must say I always like reading your opinion pieces. Very analytical and even though I do not always agree with you I believe you really do enrich SIL
Now to you points. I think it is wrong to judge Alan on his views about enhancing party structures and the ability of executives to deliver what is required of them. Recently it came to light that campaign funds were used to the tune of 90,000 dollars by Nana Addo for just one trip to Kumasi where his entourage were in Golden Tulip hotel. One of the allegations against Nana is the ostentation of his campaign. Convoys, beach parties, Lumba concerts etc etc all dissipated funds meant to resource the base of the party. This explains largely NPP defeat in 2008 as the polling agents, were not paid, or fed on the day. Alan's suggestion is in the interest of the party and is a very good one.
Second, judge him by his cv. His role in the ministries (MASLOC was his idea) his role in the US as our representative, he established the Young Executives Forum in the NPP etc etc and all this should be the basis of evaluating him
Now to Nana's chances in 2016. I think the advantage stil lies with Mahama. Nana's character will be attacked starting from today. It is a tactic that the NDC has used effectively since 2008 and it has worked and will continue to work. There is something about Nana that is wrong - his body language in particular. I have been in his company only once in 2008 and I found it hard not to notice the way he walks - with a swagger, his chest out, and what looks like the occasional smirk on his face are personality traits that will never go down well with Ghanaians
Then there are allegations of cocaine use ec. Personally I say that there is not a shred of evidence to suggest this but mud sticks. In 2008 they linked him to Raymond Amankwaa, Amoateng etc. and in 2016 they will link him with David Anim (they have already started to do so as pictures of the 2 together have surfaced)
Then there is the fact that the man is divisive. You are either for him or against him and this makes working wit him so difficult. President Kufuor came to power on the back of a well-planned alliance. He knew Mills was a Fanti and a closet CPP man. Kufuor built links with leading CPP Fantis like Nduom, Hagan etc and this eroded Mills votes in the vital Central and Western regions as CPP votes drained away from NDC to NPP. When Nana took over the leadership he abandoned this alliance and the NPP has not won in those 2 regions (Western and Central) since
Then what is his message his time? I was robbed in 2012? Free education? Corruption? Mismanagement? I don't know what he has to say. If the NPP had a fresh face this will have been an advantage - like Blair and his destruction of the Tories in 1997. However the NPP has chosen a 70 year old man who is not fresh faced at all!
It was the fresh face factor that enabled the more presidential looking Mahama to beat Nana in 2012. Appearances are vital. We live in the media age and this is why a 3rd rate singer like Victoria Beckham can become a singing star whilst more talented but less attractive persons can't
The NDC will also attack Nana's sense of entitlement. It is my birthright to be president will end anyone's political career I assure you. The man has never repudiated that statement or the statement that it is his destiny to rule us. The NDC will hammer him on this point for 2 years - from now until 2016
Mahama might be incompetent but he is nobody's fool. He knows 2 things will keep him in power - the semblance of tackling corruption and some progress on the economy. He is doing something regarding corruption. Throwing Woyome in jail will be a big coup. Add Abuga Pele and those at the National Service Secretariat and he can play this card. If the IMF measures take hold and he can deal with the electricity issue in particular then he has another card to play
I think Kyerematen will have been a far better choice as he blows away the character dimension to the NDC's campaign. By giving them Nana the NDC attack that has worked so well since 2008 is now available to NDC again

In case you did not kmow, I am bringing it to your attention. What would you call that. I call that serious bribery and corruption. If you don't agree with what I call it, you let me know. Nana Addo by that action, has taken bribery and corruption for the campaign language of the NPP. He has shown the he is both corrupt and a dangerous politician in recent memory.
I don't think so.
