The recent tour of the United Kingdom (UK) and Germany by the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, to interact with party members in preparation for the 2012 election, has been overshadowed by revelation that his Special Assistance (PA), Yaw Amfo-Kwakye, was once jailed in the UK for exporting cannabis to that country.

Amfo-Kwakye, Nana’s right-hand man, according to reports, was once jailed in London for five years in the ‘80s for exporting wee, concealed in tubers of yam, to that country.

The Herald has gathered that Akufo-Addo used to be seen in Amfo-Kwakye’s company at the Tip Toe Lane, an entertainment spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, in Accra in the evenings, where the two openly drank beer and Guinness, and puffed away on their sticks of cigarette while The Statesman, Nana’s brainchild, was being printed and packaged for sale the next morning. This happened in the early ‘90s.

The report said that officials became suspicious when Amfo-Kwakye, a cousin to Nana Akufo-Addo, got down from a Ghana Airways plane, and insisted on taking away the yams which had gotten rotten and customs officers thought yams were of no use and that they should be thrown away.

The report said that the police trailed Amfo-Kwakye to an area known to be inhabited by drug addicts, where they caught him selling the drug to a Greek national.

He was subsequently arrested, tried, found guilty and jailed for five years.

Nana Asante-Bediatuo who thought he was out to water down a publication carried by the Lens Newspaper, had called into a discussion on the issue on Asempa FM’s “Eko Si Sen” programme, to confirm the story and explain what happened.

He held brief for Amfo-Kwakye, saying that (Amfo-Kwakye) had learnt his lessons and, hence, reformed, as had many people including several men of God, who upon having a brush with the law, repented and had become dedicated to the work of God.

Amfo-Kwakye is said to be an LLB, London graduate, apart from being the cousin of the NPP flagbearer for the 2012 election, has been a close associate.

He once managed Akufo-Ado’s newspaper, The Statesman, and is believed to be the cause of Alhaji Haruna Attah, one-time editor of the Statesman newspaper, leaving it to establish his own newspaper called the Accra Mail.

Yaw Amfo-Kwakye, served the paper as Managing Director and Special Assistant to Nana Akufo-Addo. He is said to have subsequently served Nana Addo, when he was Foreign Affairs Minister in the John Kufuor administration.

The NPP flagbearer has always found it difficult to extricate himself from allegations of drug use and associating with people who are on record to have been jailed for drug-trafficking.

Last week Saturday, listeners of the Accra-based Radio Gold, were shocked to hear Samuel Abu Jinapor, an Aide to Akufo-Addo, saying that “Nana Addo has been taken to the laundry. He is now clean.”

This was in response to Mr. Kwadwo Twum-Boafo, of the Ghana Free Zones Board, who had made a meal out of the revelations on Yaw Amfo-Kwakye, that President John Mills, as compared to Nana Addo, is one to be entrusted with the destiny of the country as he has not surrounded himself with drug barons.

Raymond Amankwah, a brother- in-law of Nana Akufo Addo, is now serving a jail term in Brazil for trafficking cocaine into that country.

Earlier, he had served a jail term in the United States of America, for trafficking cocaine to that country. However, contrary to the law confiscating assets of drug dealers, Raymond Amankwah, after serving his jail term, came down to Ghana to get his assets defrozen, and given back to him during the tenure of Nana Akufo-Addo as the Attorney-General.

Do you also know that the case at the court is not about whether Woyome should refund the money or not because a High Court cannot reverse the decision of the Supreme Court? For your information, unless the Supreme Court ruling is reversed by a review of the original decision, Woyome and his NDC cronies will vomit every cent illegally claimed from the state. It may take longer but it will happen. Woyome and NDC can run but they cannot hide on this refund.

How many candidates can go about dolling out such amount to bribe delegates? Is unfair to the other contestants and the NPP leadership should have rejected that money coming from one of the candidates in the contest.

By the way, now that Nana Addo is beaming with smiles for winning the primaries, he would give credit to the EC. He should not blame the EC for rigging the elections in favour of his opponent when he loses in 2016.

A candidate dolling out Ghc600,000 to delegates who are to vote is a complete bribery and corruption at the highest level. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

Don't you see mad people talking to themselves, or appearing to be interacting with some people we cannot see? Well, that is the state Adjoa Wangara is in.

To prove that Adjoa is seeing delusions, let's consider the ff:
1) Has Nana paid all his income taxes? i.e. is the GHS600,000 from his taxed income? If Nana never worked for the whole year, where did he get all that money from?

If we are carried away by people like Adjoa, we will elect the wrong person. Does Adjoa care where Nana got his money from? What if he is bank-rolled by drug barons who want to have their 'man' at the Flagstaff House?

2) Any decent society would find what Nana did abhorrent! Enclosing GHS50.00 with letters to the voters is pure bribery.

3) And is Adjoa not aware that what Nana did is bad for NPP's future? Has that not opened the gate for future flag bearer-aspirants to directly and openly bribe voters? And won't that afford a golden opportunity for drug barons to buy their way into power?

Only mentally deranged minds like Adjoa and her kind will see nothing wrong with what Nana did.

Whilst I agree with you that NDC has no moral basis to talk about corruption because as both party and government, they corrupt to the core. Not withstanding this, if the claims in the article are accurate, then there are questions to be asked.

On the day of the election, I listened to the NPP General Secretary on Newsfile and he made it clear that the party had not received any donation. He also confirmed that the party had made arrangements for delegates in most constituencies, especially those in rural and deprived areas to be given travel cost. Finally, he said the election was being conducted under electoral laws of Ghana and therefore candidates were not allowed to give delegates any money or food directly but such assistance must be through the party structures. I guess, Nana Akufo-Addo doing so through the Regional Executives was through the party structures. Nonetheless,it would have been better and to avoid any charges of attempting to influence voters, if he had done so through the National Executive.

What is a bit worrying is that if it is true that letters requesting for delegates to vote for Nana accompanied the donation as is being claimed in the article, then that is also a legitimate question. Finally, was this a well planned scheme by Nana's campaign team because Sir John made a claim of the party being broke days prior to the election and calls on Nana to step in. Then, Nana comes with GHc 600,000 within a very short time. Is that not interesting?

The writer posed a very interesting question. That is, could this be replicated on a national scale in 2016? That is, assuming if this last minute donation was done to influence the outcome of the election?

I personally believe that Nana Akufo-Addo did not need to influence or bribe delegates to win but could this style of donation have resulted in the huge margin that even surprised Nana himself?

Nana and NPP have lost two elections but collectively they have failed to do any analysis to find out why they lost on both occasions. Simple strategic lapses such as this could be why and I suggest that even when your opponents point out some of the mistakes, the party should be honest to consider if or may be things could have been done better.
