Great Piece. More needs to be done and leadership is required to drive noble ideas for success in sanitation management.

A good beginning. However, everyday should be sanitation day. The kind of filthy environments we have are a haven for diseases.

I was very ashamed when I head about this Sorry and bandAid approached to our country's sanitation problem by the initiation of a sanitation day by the President of our dear country. This is akin to the same playbook of yesteryear when the country was being manned by uninteligent military juntas and was broke to even fund baby food import.
Sanitation day was one of the initiatives that were instituted to let the "people" feel that the area of public sanitation is their responsibility. What is not being differentiated and explained is that of Private or domestic sanitation and public and public space sanitation. The former requiring funding for continuous public education and monitoring as was being done by the 'Tankas' (Town Council) of old.
The later is the sole responsibility of the Governing authorities of which has to be delivered at the local level. This can not be effective as stated by the writer without a complete decentralization of public governance with the appropriate and more than adequate funding from the central government.
I see the initiation of the Sanitation Day as a gimmick and a sign of a non-thinking government of 2014 to handle current problems using the same playbook as its forbears to bamboozle the people.
in 2014 the population of Ghana has more than tripled from 1982, the population in major cities have more than quadrupled, work and employment patterns have changes with people going to work at various times of the day and during the week, income tax, consumer taxes and property taxes are being increase exponentially every month, it very sad and short sighted to ask the people to come out of their homes to mobilize and clean out the public spaces when they are employing others to clean out their private spaces. Out government can do better with our public funds than this old and sorry cuckandbull sanitation boondugle.
The days of open drains should be long gone and not see any on the drawing boards of the works departments of Urban roads, MOT and not approved for any private development by the districts and municipalities. Road projects should not be started if there is no funding to complete it in a year or less.
Various research and data has proven that our major health bill which is from malaria and cholera is caused by more than half of the public CIVIL engineering issues that surrounds us. Apart from our outmoded open drains, local road projects of say a mile takes about 3 years to be partially completed. we expose new bacterias from the soils to our detriment. Portholes are left for fresh water ponding and mosquito breeding. we accept and contend with all sort of excuses from our uncommitted central and local government official who will fined the money to spend on reckless persuits but hand us a sanitation day timetable of every Saturday of the month with rotten neighbourhoods to deal with. We all should sit up because in the next 10 years our population is going to be doubled from the current level and will be asked to add the first Fridays and Sundays of the month to the Sanitation timetable by governments of this kind
