The Americans provided the funding and the technical expertise to build that road. I heard they involved few Ghanaians which means the project was finished on schedule and on budget.

This was during the Bush regime. Ok, I don't like the Americans and I don't care a hoot about George Bush. But if they did so much for that highway, we should reluctantly give the credit where it is due.

My problem with the road is that we are not using it well. It is neither a highway nor a motorway since there are too many crossings with traffic lights. It is not a "freeway" through the city where you can only enter or exit without meeting any traffic lights. My other problem is all the pedestrians crossing the road and selling on it. But that is a typically Ghanaian problem. Then also there is the problem that Ghanaians do not really understand road signs. They change lanes as soon as they see the slightest gap irrespective of the white lines on the road. Motorists give traffic indicators to change lanes while sitting on unbroken white lines! Some even change lanes in the junctions when they see green. And many drive slalom on the George Bush Highway. NOBODY ARRESTS ANYBODY FOR BAD OR DANGEROUS DRIVING. It is clear the police themselves don't know the rules that apply.

We could name it after someone like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jnr. He is also an American!

Why name anything after someone who led his country to wage a savage war that killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people, displaced millions from their homes, all under false pretences?

If the KKK gives money to build a road, and we have a President who accepts it, shall we be burdened for ever with embarrassingly naming the road after the KKK? The number one problem of this road is the name!

I do not wish to undermine Pacas' central thesis but I also think Odikro's suggestion that we change the name of the highway is necessary and called for.

It is a shame that our leaders, with all our wealth, have to go begging for others to come in and to do for us what we should be doing for ourselves. That is a big a shame.

That said, we should know that George W. Bush (and some members of his cabinet including Donald Rumsfeld) is a war crminal criminal.

There are standing indctments for their arrest and trial in certain parts of Europe and Asia, I think Malaysia where Bush has been tried and convicted in absentia (See www.globalresearch.ca/lawsuit-against-bush-and-blair-for-war-crimes-international-lawyers-seek-justice-for-iraqis/5378991).

Title of said article is "Lawsuit Against Bush and Blair for War Crimes? International Lawyers Seek Justice for Iraqis." Desmond Tutu has asked the International Court to put Bush and Blair on trial!

Donald Rumsfeld nearly escaped capture and trial in Spain a few years ago. Some sympathizers of the Bush administration bundled him out of the country. A spanish magistrate (Baltasar Garzon who wanted the late Augusto Pinoche brought to facetrial) and worked with other international lawyers to bring Bush and his cabinet to trial is being harrased by the Spanish government.

We should not forget George Buh's father role in the planning of Kwame Nkrumah's interview (see Amy Goodman and Dr. Gamal Nkrumah discuss CIA DECLASSIFIED RECORDS ON BUSH'S FATHER'S ROLE: www.democracynow.org/2007/3/6/ghana_celebrates_50_years_of_independence).

I am not saying we should pin Bush's father's crimes on his son, far from it, but I believe Odikro's suggestion we name the highway after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is intelligent. People like Martin Luther King, Jr. (and Nkrumah) did more for Africa's liberation than George Bush and his family. I believe Odikro has discussed the Bush connection to Nkrumah's overthrow before on Ghanaweb.

Besides, Africa's material and human wealth build America and the rest of the West. Such minor gifts from the West pale in comparison to what they benefited from Africa and Africans.

Richard Drayton's article "The Wealth of the West was Built on Africa's Exploitation." Therefore, let us not exaggerate the crumbs the West gives. I am not sayng our leaders are not responsible for the rot we see all around us in Africa. We need to hold our leaders responsible for the bad decisions they make.

Finally, some prominent British scholars have shown that what Britain (and the rest of the West) owes Africa in terms of its exploitation of the continent is simply incalcuble.

This is my own little contribution to the discussion. Let's listen to Odikro's wise comment. Nkrumah deserves all the streets named in his honor all across Africa. Bush does Africa made America possible!

I am one who has followed you on your crusade to educate Ghanaians on the use of, especially, scientific terms. It's good you've brought this problem about our roads to the reading public. Having used that road myself, I see clearly all the things that you complain of here.

I just wish that you can, at times, put off your teacher's hat and say what you want to say. I don't think there was any need in this article to educate us on the scientific names of the weeds that invade our premier in-city highway. Only Carl von Linné will be most enthused with you here...

The good news is that the road has been cleared. I first published the article at SpyGhana.com on 18/11 (the photo is available there). And just that day or after, the road is now fine.

Bush Highway remains a concrete expression of what America's soft diplomacy can achieve. It is one of the best roads in Ghana and it has eased almost impossible congestion in a vital section of the city. Bush has provided American tax payers dollars to care for HIV patients throughout Africa. Many Africans are alive today because of G W B. I have never voted for GWB, but I am objective about his achievement. I commend him for his contributions to my homeland and native continent.

Just imagine giving this all important to Ghanaian politicians/contractors? Invariably, we would not have such a quality road; instead we would have bloated bank private accounts.

Finally, I wish to commend citizen Idris for his careful observations which when remedied would promote public safety.
