OKATAKYIE SARPONG, given the country's energy crisis and the impact on homes and businesses, the incompetent hand of the State, the inefficient and corrupt management of the ECG, there is a good case to privatise the ECG. Currently, the ECG, TOR and Ghana Railways and other State-owned industries and utilities' essential services are being delivered inefficiently, and have become financial burden on the State. Privatising the ECG will be the right thing to do.

As an an apostle of the 'Sell Ghana' crusade you stated an opinion in your article that said, "Vodafone bought GT with 6500 workers and immediately trimmed the workforce to 2300, getting rid of the uneeded and ghost workers and turned a company that was losing 50 million a year to a profitable company."
I dont know why those of you who always cite the sale of Vodafone as a successful case of privatization always shy away from coming out with the true financial status or success of that company.
You confidently quote the number of employees that were retrenched and so on and so forth but somehow in a very unprincipled manner, you are incapable of defining exactly what the success of Vodafonwe is. Why? You said it and I want to know before you convince me that that sale was worthwhile.
Meanwhile, I am one of the many a sad users of Vodafone whose number of subscribers has continued to progressively dwindle because their services are simply not good enough as compared to other Telcos. Can you imagine a Telecom company breaking down for a whole couple of days in this day and age? Not even poor old Ghana Telecom could have outdone this level of incompetence by this multi-national operator.

If you think Vodafone is not providing you with the service you need, you can switch to the other companies which you did not have when Ghana Telecom was bad but you did not have any other choice and if by this example if you don't know what SUCCESS is, then I can't help you.
You might not like Vodafone but others do and that is why it is making profit the past four years averaging close to 20 million dollars unlike the GT that was losing 50 million a year. Somebody might be using their product for them to be making money and the fact that you don't like them does not mean they are providing inferior service, at least, the sale of GT have given you a choice.
Electricity even in USA have become cheaper due to the deregulation of the Energy sector that have seen the spring up of hundreds of energy providing companies. Monopoly is not good and the earlier we sell ECG, the better.

What an illiterate fool. For the sake of addressing our unemployment problem, according to your stupid thinking, we should employ people when they are not needed?
This is typical of these socialist fools. They believe everybody should be employed and that brought the downfall of that system. When Soviet Union broke up, it came out that all the government companies on average were employing four people for jobs meant for one person. The same phenomena existed in East Germany.
China has the same problem before it converted its economy to capitalism.
We saw that in Nkrumah companies, state farms, workers brigade, etc

I agree that ECG should be privatized. This will help eliminate or cut to a minimum the 'dumsor' practices and provide better outcomes for all.

I just don't understand why nobody talks about illegal connections as the root cause of our power problems. A recent survey showed that over 50% of electricity consumers are connected illegally, most Lebanese households and factories are connected illegally.
Now, because most people don't pay for electricity they leave all their appliances on i.e. TV, fridges, freezers etc. how can the govt only focus on generating more power as the ONLY solution? Simple devices can detect all illegal connections and culprits persecuted, also if everybody is made to pay, they will use electricity efficiently and there will be enough to go around without shedding load.
No serious country will have its govt operating its utility services especially electricity. If ECG was a private company, it could easily solve these inefficiencies.
We all know the root cause of the problem but it's like a country of thieves with a code of silence, nobody wants to talk about it lest they lose their own illegal 'privilege' yet we scream about dumsor dumsor.
