  SAS, looks like we will have to agree with you. The legalization is about marijuana as the headline says and not the entire illegal drug family. With regards to the bootleg issue, the smuggling was done just because the Americans did not have distilleries. The merchandise was mostly coming from Ireland, the origin of scotch whiskey. It was legalized only when Americans saw the opportunity to cash in because of the winter. The demand was rising among the low, middle and upper class.
  Now, if the Americans had our tropical advantage, marijuana would have been legalized long ago. In fact they would have been the champions of herbal medicine, and we Africa would have been the importers. The medical jargons are what I may not agree, because in previous publications we read that judges, lawyers, businessmen, truck pushers, etc are using it. This to me sounds hypocritical. It is like asking all the men in Ghana to raise their hands if any has visited a prostitute. We will not get a single hand up. Yet, these ladies are making serious money, which is not like the biblical manna from heaven.

  In June 2012, Jose Mujica, made a move to legalize state-controlled sales of marijuana in Uruguay in order to fight drug-related crimes and health issues, and stated that they would ask global leaders to do the same Mujica said that by regulating Uruguay's estimated $40 million-a-year marijuana business, the state will take it away from drug traffickers, and weaken the drug cartels. The state would also be able to keep track of all marijuana consumers in the country, and provide treatment to the most serious abusers, much like that which is done with alcoholics.

  Prohibitionism is intensely, rabidly, frantically, frenetically, hysterically anti-truth, anti-freedom, anti-public-health, anti-public-safety and anti-economy.
  
  An important feature of prohibitionism—which it closely shares with fascism—is totalitarianism. That means a police-state apparatus—widespread surveillance, arbitrary imprisonment or even murder of political opponents, mass-incarceration, torture, etc.
  
  Like despicable, playground bullies, prohibitionists are vicious one moment, then full of self-pity the next. They whine and whinge like lying, spoiled brats, claiming they just want to “save the little children,” but the moment they feel it safe to do so, they use brute force and savage brutality against those they claim to be defending.
  
  Prohibitionists actually believe they can transcend human nature and produce a better world. They allow only one doctrine, an impossible-to-obtain drug-free world. All forms of dissent, be they common-sense, scientific, constitutional or democratic, are simply ignored, and their proponents vehemently persecuted.
  
  During alcohol prohibition in the United States, from 1919 to 1933, all profits went to enrich thugs and criminals. While battling over turf, young men died on inner-city streets. Corruption in law enforcement and the judiciary went clean off the scale. A fortune was wasted on enforcement that could have been far more wisely allocated. On top of the budget-busting prosecution and incarceration costs, billions in taxes were lost. Finally, in 1929, the economy collapsed. Does that sound familiar?

  Please do not let your thinking processes and judgments be clouded by what transpires in the USA, Dr. Adjei Sarfo. The failure of US war on drugs has absolutely nothing to do with a real fight on drugs but everything to do with intent of the framers of the war on drugs.
  
  The war on drugs have been able to achieve the aim of a majority that systematically needed a way to take away voting rights of America’s blacks, Hispanics and poor whites; they want back to an era when only white males and property owners made the laws for all and are the only honored class with voting rights. As such prisons in the US have become more privatized with its prisoners of majority blacks, Hispanics and poor whites. It is the presumed war on drugs that gave us disparities in drug sentencing between powdered cocaine (preferred by white elite class) and rock/crack cocaine preferred by blacks, Hispanics and poor white.
  
  Furthermore, the freedom of Americans to manufacture, bear, own and sell guns trumped even what could have been in the interest and a successful end to drug flow into the USA from South American nations but for the failure of US national governments to help stem the flow, sale and distribution of American made guns into nations south of the US border. It thus became apparent that the needs of law enforcement agencies in nations south of the US border could not be met even with increasing murder rates at the end of US made guns while the US demanded cooperation from those very governments to help slow the flow of drugs up into the US. The US war on drugs was designed not to be successful but to achieve what Jim Crow laws could not achieve in 200 years of slavery. As of date blacks, Hispanics and poor whites languish in prisons with long sentences under the infamous three strike rule even while major drug traffickers go undetected but petty street drug sellers are apprehended each minute. How is that possible in a nation where the government can know what Russia, North Korea, Iran and others are doing but cannot see and or know what is flowing in its waters offshore or on land?
  
  Ghana has its own problem and what we do not need is to emulate things in the civilized world like the USA which has built in consequences for some in society. Why not advocate Dr. Adjei Sarfo that Ghana become and practice a true US style democracy?

To get the attention of readers because indeed you beleive marijuana is not a drug hence does not qualify under your thesis and many like minded individuals who share in the real amazing effects of marijuana would give an attention. The issue is not about you using it or not. Why were you so quick to make such a point. In short I dont see your point. This story is not about marijuana. Akwasi Sarpong was specific on marijuana. Dont misquote him.
