Mr. Kwesi Atta Sakyi, Sir, I respect your open-minded write-up and wish there were more Ghanaians like you. But please google and find the well-researched, 150 page, "Ethnic Structure, Inequality and Governance in Ghana" published by the UN-RISD online. Research by Richard Asante & E.Gyimah-Boadi. You would be educated about ethnicity in Ghana governments. Under Rawlings' government (of which I am not a fan of), PV Obeng was virtually the all-powerful Prime Minister with majority Akan ministers. Under Rawlings in 1993, Chief Directors at all Ministries were - Akan (64%), Ewe (18%), Ga (12%), North (6%). Under Kuffour, Akan (53%), Ewe (12%), Ga (23%), North (12%). There is a lot more data and analyses on ethnicity and government from independence to the 2000s in the report.
YOUR QUOTE BELOW IS COMPLETELY FALSE, A LIE AND A WELL-USED RED HERRING BY UNEDUCATED AND HEAVILY BIASED AKANS TO JUSTIFY THEIR CONTINUING AND IRRATIONAL HATRED OF EWEs GOING BACK TO HISTORY. ARE WE NOT ALL BLACK PEOPLE??? ------------------------------------
"However, we can categorically observe and state that the tribal embers in Ghana were stoked and fanned by J.J. Rawlings during his 19 years khakistocratic rule when most government outfits were mainly populated and headed by Ewes".

Akans who constitute about 49.1 percent of the Ghanaian population (2000

census) formed about 69 percent of Kufuor’s government. Clearly, Akans are over-represented. It is also true that all the major ethnic groups are represented in cabinet. In contrast to the Busia government where Ewes were completely left out in cabinet in 1969 and 1971 respectively, Ewes are represented in the Kufuor’s cabinet even though the NPP did not win any parliamentary seat in the Volta region in the 2000 elections. Kufuor reshuffled his cabinet in 2003, though the new cabinet reflects a strong Akan presence. The Ewe and Gas in the cabinet were Major Courage Quarshiga (rtd.) and Elizabeth Ohene as well as Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey and Cecilia Bannerman, Ishmael Ashitey respectively.

Comment to: Re: I knew it
Yaw Poku,
I am part Asante and part Fanti. I am Sakyi's friend. Are you implying my your comments that he hates my Asante part?
Are you saying the Asante fathers of Sakyi's nieces and nephews are his enemies?
And are you also saying that none of the names he mentioned while he taught at Agona Swedru Secondary School (SWESCO) is Asante and therefore that Asante could have been a best friend?
Does a writer have to say everything? Are certain things not implied? In the same paragraphy you paraphrase from where he mentioned his best college friends, did you see him mention Gas, Dagomabas, Hausas,Fantis, etc? Could we go by that paragraph and sauy he hates those ethnic groups he did not mention?
And have you asked him why he had those he mentioned as his best friends?
Yaw Poku, I do not see Sakyi as "tribalist" because I weighed everything he said in the totality of his sweeping arguments. Clearly his reference to "rainbow" does not imply "tribalism." He is willing to go along with all ethnicies.
Let us appraise this piece not on the emotional convenience of paragraphic or sentential isolation, Yaw Poku, but on the strength of the articular totality of the essay!
All errors are mine!
Thanks.

Sarpong,
I don't write for everyone.
I know many of those who read my Ghanaweb articles and write to suit their taste. And you think my readers spend "a whole day" reading my articles? Where did you learn that from?
I have classmates and juniors in New Your and other places who read the same "long" articles in minutes. Some of these have families (5 children, etc), work and go to school full time. You know what? Those in New York read my articles while on trains to school or work. I am talking about voracious readers. I have taken (and still do) minutes to read longer and denser articles than anything I have posted here when I worked full time (6 days a week stading on my feet 61/2 hours a day) and went to school full time.
I sometimes took 21 credits (physics, biology, sociology, literature, economics, chemistry, etc) a semester and still read Jmeas Michener and Salman Rushdie on the side. Check out any of Michener's novels and see how dense and thick they are. And you don't want to know how many novels each student had to read for that particular semester I am referring to!
The simple fact is that we don't read! I keep reminding Adjoa Wangara that I have taught American kids, mostly American-born Ghanaian kids, and I am amazed how voracious they read. My own 9-year-old niece reads as voraciously as when I was a kid. I have a couple of siblings too who read as voraciously as I. One of my siblings always find time within his busy schedule to read my articles . He does this in minutes. Thus, I find it heartbreaking when some readers complain.
Some of these are friends with whom I used to read with in Ghana. We visited each other in the same neighborhood and spent quality time in my personal library just reading, reading, and reading. Sarpong, I am talking about SERIOUS readers. For them work, family, etc,. don't come between them and reading.
For instance, one of them has 5 kids and doing his master's while still working full time, and yet he still reads everyone of my articles (sometimes 1 or 2am after he returns from work). This friend has never complained once about the length of my articles. These are the kinds og readers I write for.
I do not write for the likes of Adjoa Wangara. He can barely read critically to understand many things on Ghanaweb. This is not an insult. It is an impression he has given me and many of my readers whom I regularly communicate with privately.
I also do not have to write to Daniel Pryce to confirm where Adjoa Wangara writes from. What has that got to do with anything? Why should I do that since it has no bearing on my life?
Pryce is a very good friend of mine also and he and I have spoken on phone a couple of times as well as through private emails.
Neither have I said Adjoa Wangara is you, if that is the impression you have about my references to him to read you!
I have referred your articles to him because I believe he can learn some good grammar and writing skills from your write-ups if he thinks I don't write well.
I have told him you are the Dean of Ghanaweb Engliahs Grammar and Writing! Hahahahahahah...What is wrong with that? Don't you see yourself as a excellent grammarian and good writer?
I have reccommended you to him because I see as such! So, you see, this is the problems I have with some readers on Ghanaweb.
You identify a good grammarian and excellent writer and consequently recommends him or her to another reader and suddenly the recommendee becomes conflated with the grammarian! What is sort of weak reasoning is that?
It is the same problem I have with Yaw Opoku, USA. I have always argued for critiical reading and analytic thinking skills to be made a part of our educational institutions. We have a huge problem.
Where did I covertly or overtly say Adjoa Wangara were you? Cite just one such statement! And who says Adjoa Wangara is too much for anybody on Ghanaweb? What intelligent thing has he said on Ghanaweb? Name one person on Ghanaweb that I can't stand up to? There is no one, not even a billion of you and a trillion of Adjoa Wangara combined. I can stand anyone on Ghanaweb!
In any case I am having fun with Adjoa Wangara. I have asked him to read you for excellent grammar and writing skills (since I am bad writer) and to visit a website for kids (www.timeforkids.com) where he can learn decorum and pick up some good grammar and writing skills. Hahahahahahaha...
All errors are mine!
Have a good day my Kokoase brother!

My Kokoaase Brother Sarpong,
You have no idea what goes on behind the scene between Kwesi Atta Sakyi and myself. So don't go there. Sakyi is one of my best friends in the world though we have not met face-to-face!
Again you don't know the difference between a term paper and writing for the public. I have never written anything like this for a term paper! What I have written for college credit are more complicated and dense than this!
Contact my professors and show them samples of my Ghanaweb pieces and see what they tell you. Unfortunatley it is the level you find yourself in that makes you think such articles I post on Ghanaweb are exclusively meant for college credit! How could you have drawn this conclusion!
Have you read any of my college/school papers? Regrettably, Sarpong, this is the same reasoning you capitalized on to draw the conclusion where you made Adjoa Wangara Justice Sarpong! You got it all wrong again.
This is the same problem you bring along with you whenever you read my articles. When I said I read dense, complex novels and papers in addition to my formal school work I never meant those stuff I read outside my school work (while in school full time and working full time) had anything to do with my schhol work?
I merely meant to say that readers like Adjoa Wanagara were lazy to complain about the length of my articles. Where in my response to you did I say my Ghanaweb articles looked essays I submit for college credit? How do some of you read? Why doreaders like you make inferences and conclusions where there is none, the same mistake Yaw Poku, USA made? here?
For yout information, only 7 PhDs read my articles. The rest are those with O'Level/A'Level, community college (associate degrees), Middle School, bachelor's and master's. The bulk of my readership, at least those that I know personally don't even have bachelor's. You might know some of these on Ghanaweb. I don't want to give names.
The fact is that an average reader of ordinary novels should not have a problem understanding my pieces. The words I use are not from Mars. My articles are not the longest in the world. It is that our culture does not instill reading in us!
I learned to read complex novels (and other literary works) even as a child. I have bought books that have taught me reading skills including reading fast while still grasping the contents of what I read. Those are what have helped.
I have recommended such books to friends who have been grateful These friends don't complain about the length of my articles. They enjoy them. With regards to American childreng who read voraciously (including my niece and several others), I have several scientific papers right here with me attesting to my claims.
I have friends who teach in the American system (I believe you also do) and they should tell you this. I have also attended a couple of national conferences on this very questions. Yes, American kids have their own reading problems but we Ghanaians generally don't read! We want others to read for us!
I attended a conference in New Jersey in around 2006 or so (I am not too certain of year) where Dag Mills, founder of Ligthouse International Chapel, told us how one of his children, a little boy, had read Nelson Mandela's autobiography with relative ease. Yet I have recommended the same book to a few Ghanaian adults who had complain the book is too voluminious.
I have known Ghanaian parents who overseen their kids (middle schoolers) read Ama Ata Aidoo, Tsitsi Dangaremgba, etc., here in the states, yet Ghanaian adult-kids like Adjoa Wangara will complain if asked to read such books. Do you know how many of these see such works that are obviously above their heads but still manage to read them anayway? They see such works the same way you and Adjoa Wangara see my articles! I have dealt with many of these kids and you will be surprised how precisely they grasp the contents of these works which are certainly above their levels!
This is what I see on Ghanaweb everyday! Unfortunately I also know many Ghanaians (most happen to be my friends) who read as voraciously! What can our educational system and parents improve the reading skills of children?
Anyway I have repeatedly told you I have inferirity complex under all the monikers you use. Do you have a superiority complex, my Kokoase Brother?
Have a good day, my Kokoase Brother! You may also want to alert the FBI (and the CIA) that I am an INCESUOUS TROKOSI DAUGHTER FUCKER. What are you waiting for? Don't you want me in prison? Tell Adjoa Wangara to visit Time For Kids (www.timeforkids.com) or continue to read your articles if he thinks I am a bad writer!
This is my last response. Let leave you for another project. But Kwesi Atta Sakyi is like a brother to me, much like Dr. SAS, Michael Bokor, Daniel Pryce, Kojo T, Andy K, military Man, Mr. Figure-Out (though I still don't know his/her identity), Bernard, Ghana, and several others.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT I DO READING AND WRITING FOR PLEASURE. NOTHING SERIOUS. NEITHER IS NOT MY PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE (LIKE YOU).
Thanks.

Sometimes it is easier commenting than writing for others to read. Let us also read what you publish on Ghanaweb. People have written well-received doctoral dissertations on such sensitive topics all over the world!

"However, we can categorically observe and state that the tribal embers in Ghana were stoked and fanned by J.J. Rawlings during his 19 years khakistocratic rule when most government outfits were mainly populated and headed by Ewes."
A lot of our Akan brother have used the above phrase many times as a basis to establish their hate ,intolerance, and a deep suspicion of Ewes. It is factually not true that Ewes occupied all positions in Ghana during the Rawlings era though Rawlings was an intolerant dictator. A quick research of the ministers under Rawlings showed that his govt was more balanced than what we had in the KU4 era. He had a lot of ministers that were Akan and also from the 3 Northern regions.
The destruction and pain under his regime unleashed a hidden part of the Ghanaian and ushered in a new level of tribalism which had alawys been there. The Rawlings revolution only exposed it, it only brought the tribal nature of the Ghainaian like all Africans to the limelight.
Real tribal politics emerged in Ghana when Nkrumah was overhtrown and some members of the Danqua/Busia fraternity refered to Nkrumah as a Liberian but not Ghanaian. Followed by our demonization and deportation of Nigerians, that brought an ugly sense of nationalism to the avarage Ghanaian.
After that moment most of our Akan brothers who most at times couldnt differentiate betwen a Ghanaian Ewe and a Togolese Ewe saw every Ewe with a suspicion on the question of which Ewe is a Ghanaian or not. Sadly so it has been till this date.

Good observation but I will say that the real tribalism started during the Busia regime. The NLC was not tribalistic. Kotoka teamed with Afrifa to remove Nkrumah. The council was not dominated by any tribe and didn't think tribalistically. Kotoka led the coup but he never headed the NLC even though he was as educationally qualified as those who led it. He was a Trained teacher who could speak English.
It was Busia's region who started it all and not for that statement about inward looking people. The tribalism started before that.
Read my main contribution to Kwesi's article which deserves to be praised for the intention but criticised for some of the points he raised.

Yaw Poku,
I am part Asante and part Fanti.
Thanks.

And please, don't come here to distract critical readers who are here for constructive and intelligent engagement!
You can always re-enact your childish pranks and worldly ignorance where Justice Sarpong's articles are posted. People like Kwesi Atta Sakyi write for serious readers, not your shallow kind.
Then again, I have always asked you to read Justice Sarpong's articles if you think writers like me,Michael Bokor, Daniel K. Pryce, Samuel Adjiei Sarfo, Andy K, etc., don't write well.

1. As soon as I read your definition of what Ghana as an abstract entity is, I knew you were going to get into trouble, Kwesi. You failed to mention the important point that Ghana as it became is a forced entity artificially created from different tribal nations. No analysis of tribalism in our country can fail to mention this important fact. Ever since we were forced together, we have been trying, unsuccessfully, to forge a unitary nation. Our differences were obvious even before independence which was why Nkrumah banned parties formed on tribal basis after independence.
Your claim that: " a distinct set of people with a common history, distinct behaviourial characteristics, and unique cultural practices, among others" is a chimera we have been trying hard to bring to reality. Kwesi, we have not succeeded in that regard. We are aiming at that ideal state but we have not achieved it. Your present essay would not be necessary if we had attained that goal. (I could go on in this vein but I am talking too much).
2. Nkrumah was certainly pro-left but not unabashedly so. Nkrumah's communist leanings were diluted. He sought help from the communist countries as a counter to, not a replacement of, western help. He wasn't a doctrinaire leftist else he wouldn't have sought to bend leftism to Ghanaian conditions.
3. The true genesis of tribalism on a political and national basis started with Busia's regime. Busia was the first to run a very tribalistic campaign and went on to draw heavily on his tribal loyalties in his government. When JJ exploited tribalism, he wasn't the first. (His was somewhat unique because JJ cannot even be called a "true" Ewe. Ewes are strictly patrilineal and the guy can still not even speak the language properly. Kufuor's balancing act just turned the scale to the far end of JJ but K4 is a "true" Akan. And we are still searching for the correct balance...
The rest of your piece is just a re-counting of those moral platitudes that are not really an analysis of tribalism in our country. Your personal experiences with other tribes are the same as most Ghanaians also have, so there is nothing unique about them.
Perhaps the most important point you made in this piece is that the tribalism shown on ghanaweb does not correspond to that in present day Ghana at all. Those of us who travel often home know this. Political tensions may make some people say certain things in the heat of the moment but when most Ghanaians meet on a one to one basis, tribe counts very little. Like you, I have seen that in Ghana as well as in many of the countries I have lived in. It is a redeeming grace.
Anyway, Kwesi, you left Legon in 1978. Aluta against Acheampong made you start your national service in 1979... Most of the visitors to this site were by then the beautyful ones yet to be born.
Thanx

kwarteng, when can you ever be critically constructive rather than just always full of praises? Any time you read anything by persons you like, you always praise them to the highest heavens. Never a critical comment!
Kwesi's present piece is good, the intentions are noble but there are obvious theoretical shortcomings. But kwarteng will NEVER say a word about these even though he can be very critical of authors he doesn't like.
Are you afraid even to offer constructive criticisms? Is it because you don't want your own articles to be criticised by others?
Why can't you just say what is good about Kwesi's piece and what is not so good instead of the bland encomiums you bestow on him?
I tell you, every scholar worth his salt benefits more from constructive criticisms than from mere praises. Constructive criticisms tell you where you can get better. Praises only go into your head and make you complacent. Which one will you choose?

Mr. Kwesi Atta Sakyi, there is also tribalism in Europe, Asia and America. It is the aim of western Europeans who are Anglo-Saxons to control the Slavs that has been the root cause of the wars in Europe, 1990 Yugoslav war and the current war in Ukraine. I am not sure if you will be writing about racial discrimination that is practiced by the west socioeconomically, if we are to make reference to issues in Zimbabwe, South Africa and United States of America.

OUR VIBRANT AND DIFFERENT CUSTOMS & CULTURES MAKES US INTERESTING AND DIVERSE BUT UNIQUELY ALL GHANAIAN. WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING THIS INSTEAD OF LETTING TRIBALISM GET IN THE WAY!
INTERMARRIAGES HAVE GONE ON FOR CENTURIES. ASHANTES AND FANTES HAVE ANCESTRY OF NORTHERNERS IN OUR BLOOD. THE ASHANTE QUEENS SLEPT WITH NORTHERNERS SO THEIR CHILDREN WOULD BE TALL AN HANDSOME BECAUSE THE ASHANTI MEN WHERE SHORT. SLAVES FROM NORTHERN GHANA WERE BROUGHT TO CAPE COAST TO BE SHIPPED TO THE AMERICAS BUT SLAVERY WAS ABOLISHED SO NORTHERNERS MEN AND WOMEN INTERMARRIED WITH FANTE' S.
THIS IS FACTUAL HISTORY. MOST OF ASHANTI'S AND FANTES KNOW THIS .
HISTORY HAS CHANGED CIRCUMSTANCES SOMETIMES FOR THE BETTER.
LOVE BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES.
TOGETHER WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL DESPITE OUR DIFFERENT LANGUAGES!
LET US LOVE OURSELVES AND CELEBRATE HUMANITY BECAUSE WE ARE ALL MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT DESPITE DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND SKIN COLOR. LETS CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE HUMANITY! WE ALL FEEL PAIN, ENJOY LAUGHTER, AND DIE IN THE END.
