No doubt you, Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, are a good example of what Armah correctly calls “the beautyful ones are not yet born.” Nothing about you is “beautyful.” Everything about you and your work is shallow and mediocre! As a self-proclaimed teacher, it is your responsibility to adduce or search for evidence to discredit the Deputy Minister of Education if you think he should have produced one to buttress his statement. That is what real scholars do. If your opponent does not produce evidence to back up his or her claims in a confrontation, you the attacker can, should and must come up with one to make your case against him or her. You haven’t and here you are attacking him as shallow thinkers always do.

Couldn’t you have called the Ministry of Education or ask your Akufo-Addo or Gabby Otchere (the Danquah Institute) or Sidney Casely-Hayford to verify the evidence for you? You could as well have contacted the embassies connected with the Deputy Minister of Education’s claims. I don’t think you have any interest in the things you write about, for if you do you will always go to any extent to have your facts right! Sometimes I wonder who taught you and which institutions you attended. It is sad state of affairs! One study even suggests that close to 75, 000 Niger. On the contrary, the Nigerian government spends US$751 million on federal universities.

How, one might want to ask, are Nigerians spending this amount of money when Soyinka, Adichie, Emecheta, and Achebe can teach these kids science, literature, anthropology, mathematics, philosophy, archaeology, computer science, etc? Does this make sense to you, Okoampa-Ahoofe? Are there not better schools in Nigeria? And are there not Ghanaians studying in Nigerian universities! Are there not students from all over the world who study in Ghanaian institutions, including exchange programs, etc? Haven’t you seen or read any scientific

studies where American-based West African parents are more likely to send their American-born kids to study in Ghana for their high-school certificates than in their home countries? These are some of the questions any serious writer will look into. Since you teach these kids journalism, how do you teach them investigative journalism and evidence-gathering?

Of course, I can understand your position because most of the time you don’t write to educate. You write for the sake of writing. Soyinka, Emecheta, Achebe, and Adichie don’t write for the sake of writing. They write to educate. And they surely put a lot of thinking into their writings. You don’t. You don’t think. You don’t know how to think. Your writings lack content for that matter.

You forgot to mention the following world-class thinkers who have impacted the world and got their educational starts in Ghana. Yes, you and Ayi Kwei Armah are both wrong. Nkrumah’s policies helped create many “beautyful” ones. Unfortunately you are not aware of this because of your ignorance (For instance, Dr. Victor Lawrence’s contributions to human civilization surpasses those of Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Buchi Emecheta, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie combined).

Nkrumah’s Ghana contributed to making the following international scientists and engineers:

1) Dr. Kwabena Boahen (bioengineer; creator silicon retina; mixed-mode multichip models; winner of the NSF Career Award, Office of Naval Researchers Young Investigator Program Award; Beneficial-Hodson Merit Award; Sloan Fellowship for Theoretical Neurobiology; Packard Foundation Fellowship (Fellowship in Science and Engineering), NIH Director’s Award, Skirlanich Junior Award, etc). Moreover, unlike you, Prof. Boahen has a TED.com to his

credit (watch him deliver a presentation “A Computer that Works like the Brain” at www.ted.com/talks/kwabena_boahen_on_a_computer_that_works_like_the_brain?language=en). Prof. Boahen says:

“Being a scientist at heart, I want to understand how cognition arises from neuronal properties. Ghana education is of better quality than Nigeria by all standards n from the time immemorial nigerians have considered anything from Ghana as better than Nigeria. from Ghanaians who went to teach in Nigeria till now. they also know that our system is fair, graduation year is assured. the amount of fees Nigerians pay in Ghana schools are higher than Nigeria. and the kind of lifestyle they live in Ghana attests to the fact that they are not in Ghana for a cheap lifestyle. they would better have lived in Nigeria n enjoy life home.therefpre, those students u claimed to have spoken to were not being truthful or either u massaged the assessment with your own emotions n preconceived notion u have about mr ablakwa.

If you go to any of the English speaking African countries like Nigeria,The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa etc you will see a lot of Ghanaian teachers many of whom are not trained teachers, but doing a terrific job.In addition ,it is a matter of pride for citizens of these countries to study in Ghana. In fact Ghana is recognized as a country of quality education. And the foundation was laid by Kwame Nkrumah. Though standards might have fallen Ghanaians are still known for possessing an educational asset worthy of praise.

I was in legon in 2007 when a group of students from Nigeria carried in manu buses were shocked at the developments they saw in ug,legon. some even slept on the floor of the entry of the beautiful balme library.

Does that means Zenith has also bribe the organization responsible for the Award. Zenith bank also has one of the best Accounting institution which have produced competent Ghanaians in the banking industries. Every nation has their bad time; we are probably having ours now. Nigerians have always put money infront of everything n that's one thing I hate about them..especially the igbos. cos of that other foreigners who ride cab with them don't like them n they have acquired a bad name. Ghanaians are not like that.
that notwithstanding, Ghana education is the best in west Africa. this incontrovertible fact can only be argued by someone who behaves like an ostrich who puts his head in the sand n does not want to raise it.
Ghana economy was booming as u well articulated. the problem we have is hate ingrained in tribalism. since the ndc came to power everything has messed up. they know how to win elections by every means but they don't know how to govern.the poorest regions in Ghana have been voting for the ndc n the rich regions have been voting for the npp which has a panacea for solving the economic woes of Ghana. npp is coming back strongly to turn the economy of Ghana around n we only have to pray to welcome that.
Nigeria has their own challenges though experienced economic boom in the mid 70s. things took a nose dive when the expenditure of Nigeria exceeded their income. in the end they needed to go to the imf-which is there to punish governments who have mismanaged their economies. Nigeria had to pay high interests in addition to the principal amount they took from the imf. in the end they became broke. since then Nigeria hasn't resurrected from the economic shackles n u guys have to undergo serious policy changes to elect a less corrupt n vibrant leader who can resuscitate the economy within a couple of years.
president luis inacvio lula da silver of brasil did it within 10 years (read the bfrasillian magic), j.a. kuffuor was able to do it within 8 years and they were jointly awarded the nobel peace price on food security.
why cant mahama or goodluck do it now that even Ghana has discovered oil. it is very troubling. gargantuan stealing, corruption n mismanagement.

Yes, fees could be cheaper but that's not the main consideration in opting for higher education in Ghana. After all I won't buy thrash for free; I'll pay decent money for decent product. To inform the uninformed writer, my family house in Madina had been renovated and converted into a hostel facility and currently hosts six students from outside Ghana paying good money to live their and pursue good education. So Ahofe can serve his masters but the fact remains the fact.

And you think Ghana should be producing the likes of the authors you mentioned before you would accept the quality of education in Ghana? Is that the yardstick of measuring education? I laugh at you. Those people had their education long ago in the colonial era. This you must know. I thought with the kind of language you are very well noted for, you could beat your chest to say those authors did not come close to you. I laugh at you. Did you conduct a research to find out why the Nigerians come to Ghana for education or you just spoke to a few? What was your sample?

I vote for the npp n I support nana addo but just cos I do these does not mean I should see everything under the supervision of the ndc as inferior. Ghana education will remain good quality whether is the ndc or npp in power. poor u mr ahofe. u might have bought your phd in Nigeria as it has always been or u don't have it at all.
I was talking to a group of Ethiopian students n they even acknowledged that Ghana has a good education system.

Well as far as I know, professors are those who have done a lot of research and publications. Ahoofe is lazy and be called a Prof. Any gud Prof would have taken his time to find out how much fees are paid by Nigerian students ...

Ahoofe is lazy and be called a Prof. Any gud Prof would have taken his time to find out how much fees are paid by Nigerian students in Ghana and how much their counterparts pay in Nigeria. Last year, the governor of the Nigerian central bank mentioned that Nigeria spends about 1billion dollars annually to pay fees in Ghanaian universities. He added that Nigeria needs less than a billion dollars to improve the quality of education in Nigeria to retain this huge foreign exchange in Nigeria. U may not like Ablakwah but that shd not cloud your judgement. There are some gud things in Ghana and we need not overlook them bcos of partisan politics.

How many people on the African soil can be compared to Prof Naa Afelley Sackifio ln her field?? Or is it because they are not from Akyim??? Go to KNUST and UMaT and see the kind of courses these Nigerians are reading. If you don't know, haven't you also heard that you can buy high school certificate on the street of Nigeria??? Go to Gabon, Namibia and South Africa to see the number of Ghanaian teachers they are depending on especially in the field of science and mathematics. Have a day's journey to Ghana Maritime University to see the percentage number of foreigners to Ghanaians in the that school. I don't know your area of expertise but I'm sure you lack the ability to do quantitative and qualitative analysis. I'm sorry!
