  Very balanced article with some food for thought. Any how one look at it, it is clear that we pay almost halve the price paid by the UK consumers. The issue relating to the income levels is debatable. In Ghana here, corruption, supper profits and underhand deals alone constitute about 90% of our income. What you see on the payroll is just the official income which does not form even 10% of our real incomes per month. A district coordinator for National Service Scheme is paid about GHC 1,500 a month. He is able to get over GHC 25,000 per month from underhand deals. What stop him from buying petrol at current prices?. Just think of it.

  Occupy Ghana is simply using the government's own rhetoric against them. Didn't they promise to reduce fuel prices "drastically" if they won the election? What exactly did they do?
  
  In the petroleum products price build up, there is a 15% exploration levy for GNPC, towards its exploration programme. Now that the corporation is earning money from the offshore production, where does that money go? Why can't the consumer be relieved of that burden? Then there is the other 15% levy for road maintenance. Since road users now pay tolls on most of the motorable roads in Ghana, doesn't the continued payment of that levy by taxpayers amount to double taxation?
  
  So you see, by removing those two inimical charges, you are already getting close to the 50% that Occupy Ghana is asking for, even without taking into account that 40% worldwide fall in the price of crude oil.
  
  Why should Ghana be saddled with an antiquated refinery which probably derives less than 45% for its stock feed? Clearly, it will be more economical to import all of Ghana's petroleum products requirement than the current jobs for the boys nonesense which isn't benefiting anyone except those in the create, loot and share inner circles.

  KKO, Occupy Ghana is not calling for the removal of the 15% exploration and the other 15% road maintenance taxes but demanding that because there has been 50% fall in the world market price of crude oil, then, the government or NPA must reduce the price of petroleum products by the same margin. That is what I analysed and concluded that their argument is irrational because all other elements that constitute the retail price of petroleum products in Ghana remain the same.
  
  In fact, your last three paragraphs support my argument. Unless all elements constituting the retail price in Ghana are reduced by 50%, NPA cannot reduce prices by 50%. It's as simple as that. For example, here in the UK, there are no petrol attendants to fill your vehicle when you go to the pump but you do it yourself and you go and pay. So there are only one or two staff at the filling station. In Ghana there could me four, five or more so the cost of the retailer as well as their profit margins are also computed into the price. Is Occupy Ghana asking the retailers to reduce their staff costs, overheads and profit margin by 50%?
  
  In the UK prices have been reduced by not more than 16%. This is a country that has refineries and a strong currency yet, 50% drop in price of crude oil has not resulted in a corresponding 50% price reduction at the pump.
  
  My article is very fair because I looked at the both sides of the debate and even suggested a further price reduction by NPA.

  Whilst in Ghana recently, I noticed at several petrol stations that at any one time only one or two attendants would be serving, while the others conversed or simply stood idly by. The consumer pays for all that, I agree.
