I cannot understand the mentality of people who practise the Islamic faith. They always say only a tiny minority embark on violence in defence of their faith. It is also unambiguously clear that the majority takes no action to flush out these criminals from the mosques. It is the sons and daughters of the innocent majority who eventually become criminals. For me, Islam just like any other religion or people who believe in “faith” of any kind are major obstacles to world peace and progress.
If the so-called prophets were living today, I wonder if anyone would bear allowing them to be less than 30m away. I do not want to go into details but religious people are mentally delusional.

The bad guys have already characterized it for generations to come: Terrorism is now pinned to Islam, no matter how unfair the tag.
But Islamic scholars and devotees can rise up as one and condemn all despicable acts associated with the religion. So far, that has not happened, and in many instances, we have some mixed and feeble whispers of condemnation as the ones made in this article. The forked tongues of Muslim scholars and devotees on the issue of terrorism have given rise to Al Quaida and Bokor Haram, and swallowed Islam's great contribution to human civilization. If satirizing the Prophet and angering Islamists can bring death to the innocent, that alone can smear the religion for all time. So, unless Muslims rise to destroy those who have appropriated their name to perpetrate violence, the world will continue to exert retribution upon every devotee of this religion in one way or the other.

And when there are not "molesting" their girls, women, and young adults who desire freedom and have human rights, they are on the international stage funding or otherwise condoning "Islamic" fanatics, (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistian, etc.).
For the longest, Pakistan would not assist the world in controlling the Afghanistan Taliban, until the Taliban begun "rocking" Pakistan.
And if we may ask the writer, Rabiu Alhassan a question, what is the point about "...They had the right to do what they were doing but I challenge the judgment of Charlie Hebdo to consistently court public disaffection towards Islam and Muslims."
When was it ever useful to "challenge" somebody's, an entity's judgement, if the entity is believed to truly have "the right"?
On another note, I read a headline the other day:
"Hezbollah leader on Charlie Hebdo: 'Extremists more offensive to Islam than cartoons".
That statement should have been widely circulated, publicized.
But no!
We watch mostly MSNBC in the evenings, during the week. Non of their evening programs that discussed the murders in France mentioned that statement, not even Chris Hayes. (Not sure about the other US networks).
But, as you say, those are precisely the Muslim voices, conscience, and "powers" the world need to control and negate "the minority (Muslim) who choose to engage in violence in so-called defense of Islam."
Religion, all over the world, is over-rated, and anti-progress with respect human development and wise custody/conservation of earth!

Unfortunately, your reasoning does not help the image of Islam which is now at its nadir because of international terrorism. If the worst enemies of the prophets were to come together to concoct a way to make your religion hateful and repugnant, they could not do greater harm than these Islamist terrorists; and the way for Islam to redeem itself is to overwhelm these mad men by a massive rise and resistance against their heinous activities. Otherwise, innocent Muslims stand to pay the price.
Fortunately, this movement has just begun. As Prof. Lungu intimated above, the chief of Hezbollah has succinctly stated that the terrorists do more harm to Islam than any cartoon could do. I could not put it better.
