Go and read the book - all of it and not just the one chapter that talked of the Satanic Verses. The book did NOT do a thing like "tarnishing and maligning the glorious image of Prophet Mohammed". The whole book is a great literary satire that questions some of the grounds of the Islamic faith. The Satanic Verses that Rushdie used played on a tale that is common knowledge in Islamic history - those verses that the prophet said may have come from the devil. Rushdie did not ridicule the prophet but questioned the basis of his revealed knowledge - a legitimate exercise.

The Muslims were peeved just because he dared mention those verses "at all". All the muslims who died in the conflagration later on, like you, had not read the book.

Salman Rushdie condemned the Da Vinci Code for its literary shortcomings not because it dared question the Christian faith. Salman Rushdie is a literary stylist and read the book on that level. All the reviews you cited as condemning the book did so on its LITERARY MERITS, not because it dared give a strange life to Jesus Christ. All the reviewers said the book was entertaining but it was not GREAT LITERATURE. Indeed, they say the same things about Stephen King's novels too.

It was only some Catholic clergy in the Vatican and some extreme right wing envangelists in the US who condemned Da Vinci Code on religious grounds. Even then, they never called for the author to be killed! Mel Gibson was also never threatened with death. Martin Scorsese, whose film, The Last Temptation of Christ annoyed many Christians, is still walking a free man. Nobody pronounced a death sentence on him.

We have been hearing this hypocrisy argument for a long time even before the Charlie Hebdo murders. You ask: whose freedom of speech? And you say it's the west's freedom of speech. Of course! Whose freedom of speech do you want the west to promote? Do you want the west to promote oriental freedom of speech? Or Islamic freedom of speech? or Chinese freedom of speech? No, they will proclaim Western freedom of speech. It is just in the same way that in muslim countries, they also proclaim their types of freedom of speech. They don't give much space to western type freedom of speech either.

Inusah, WE ARE ALL HYPOCRITES. We are all fighting for our personal interests. The Jews are also fighting for their personal interests and have contrived cleverly to get the west to align their interests with theirs - without fighting a bullet or killing anybody!

Muslims believe their religion will eventually conquer the world and everybody will become a Muslim. The West don't believe in that and they have fought this for millennia. If you, as a Muslim, stand up and accuse the West of hypocrisy, there are many grounds they too will stand up and accuse Muslims of hypocrisy.

Religious pluralism and accommodating the views and religions of others have been the cause of feuds between Zionist and other religions since the time of Moses. Christianity, Judaism and Islam that all propagate the existence of one God are in themselves despotic religions, and represent eastern despotism in religion as opposed to the plural gods in Greece and elsewhere.

Any human who kills in the name of a supreme god or divine prophet is downright stupid. If they are truly divine and will sit in judgement over us, then they need us to fight for the honour of their names.

And, please, don't tell me about he crusades unless you want to admit that all the jihad some Muslims are waging against innocent people is equally stupid. Yes, Christendom is guilty of some really stupid and hellish stuff. But all those are seen as part of its dark ages.

Does Islam have in itself the capacity for such self-criticism and therefore progressive evolution? The Quoran provides room for such progress. But the Imams, fearful of loss of power, won't allow that to happen. This is the problem with Islam as opposed to the other major religions of the world.

Christian terrorism i.e. killing those who will not join Christianity has to be fought and won by liberals and pagans in the west. The freedom of religion in the west was won by defeating the intolerant Christianity while Islam allows freedom of religion in Spain(Al Andalus) and the Holy Land under Islamic control without any fight.

Islam did not really allow freedom of religion in Al Andalus. They came there as conquerors. They were outnumbered by the people they conquered and it was difficult for them to force them all to convert to Islam. So they allowed Christianity and Judaism in Spain under very strict conditions. The Christians and Jews were third class citizens. They paid huge taxes and were restricted in their worship. They didn't have the same rights as the Muslims unless they converted to Islam. You call that freedom of religion?

The freedom of religion that Muslims enjoy today in the West - USA, France, UK, Sweden, Spain, Holland, etc is faaaaar greater than the freedom of religion enjoyed by Christians and Jews in Al Andalus(ia). It is still greater than the freedom of religion enjoyed today by Christians in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan or even Egypt which was a flourishing Christian country before Islam was founded and used force to convert Egypt. Talk about double standards.

Christians also are guilty of religious killings in the past. But they don't do that now. They have learnt better. Can we say that of Islam today?

The problem, Abdullah, is everybody thinking their religion is the best. But there is no proof that Islam, Judaism, Christianity or any other faith based religion is the best. No proof at all.

I live in Europe and I also don't like the discrimination I see here - whether religious or racial. But I will never support the killing of people who offend one religion, no matter the religion, and I will never argue that my religion is better than other religions.

Why? The Charlie magazine can not publish anything that will be anti semitic, holocaust denial, or against Israel.

Is Israel God? when nothing can be said about it? Is holocaust denial not a freedom of speech? Robert Spencer has written a book to deny the existence of Prophet Mohammed recently and they are tonnes of books saying bad things against our prophet and the west will not say anything about that and call it freedom of speech. That is the big double standards by the west.

I say;
what do you mean by conquer? If you conquer someone, it means you have power, strength and authority over the one you conquered. So according to your assertion Muslim has power over Jews and Christians of Al Andalus in Arabic not Andalusia in other languages. They could still force convert them If they wish, but they did not because Islam forbids force conversion to Islam which is clearly stated in the Quran.

Later, Christian conquered back Al Andalus and we all read what happened i.e. force conversion, killings etc. So when the Muslims were running to North Africa, the Jews went with them(Muslims). That is why Morocco, a Muslim country was once in the world with more Jewish populations.

Do you have indigenous English Muslim in England during Richard the Lion Heart? or during King James? or Martin Luther? The Christian world was once rule by Christianity and no religion is allowed.

It is after 1800s when the liberals and pagans among the west fought the Christians and won the battle i.e. the north and the southern USA before the freedom of speech was established in the constitution and laws.

Before that, the Catholics will persecute the Protestants and vice versa and the Mormons will be persecuted by both.

Christians do kill today. There is law and other in the west, that is why you do not see much Christian killings. The west went to war in the Muslim majority country like Iraq and made Iraq a failed state. That is what brought isis. Christians of Iraq were the first Christians from the time of Jesus and nothing happened to them under different Muslims rule, even under Saddam Hussein nothing happened to them. Now the west conquered that part of the world and left it to rot, and isis will emerge to be the dark age of Muslims to borrow it from PK

The Muslims who conquered Spain were not so righteous as you want us to believe. They conquered Spain through better military strategy in which case it didn't matter that the conquered were more than the conquerors. The freedom of religion that was allowed for non-Muslims was not as benign as you want us to believe.

Now this thing about double standards of freedom of expression. There is really no absolute freedom of expression. It is always someone's freedom of expression. If the same standards are not being applied to the Muslims of Europe, it is because it is France's freedom of expression that is being applied. To call it double standards is, itself, a hypocritical statement. No country, even the Muslim ones, allows freedom of expression on the opponents' terms.

Now, I am not saying that it is good for France to censure abuse of Jews but not do the same for Muslims. I am saying that they do this for self-interest. Note too, that, there is a racial element in this too, not just religious. France, as a culture and nation, feels closer to the Jews (who they also discriminated against in the past and still do so mildly now) than to Arabs.

It is really not true to say that Europeans give the green light to deny Muslims their right to see their prophet respected. No European government actively encourages discrimination against Muslims. Perhaps the laws are not enforced as sharply as against other forms of discrimination but it is really not a free for all to be disrespectful to Muslims.

Note, too, that, the Jews fought hard to stop discrimination against them. The Muslims in Europe are also in the process of doing that. But it cannot be achieved by such acts as the Hebdo murders which is why every Muslim, while pointing hands at their poor treatment in Europe, should also condemn those murders.

Yes, Christians have killed in the past especially in the name of their religion. They killed a lot. But that is no more than Muslims too have done. Note the millenia of differences between Shia and Sunni and the blood that people of the same religion shed in the name of that religion. And, yes, Christians are killing today in millions and destroying other countries but these are because of geo-political and economic interests. You cannot say that they are doing this because of their Christian religion?

Finally, this story about Islam not coercing others to convert to the faith is a very tall lie that is not supported by the historical facts. Islam would NEVER have spread so much around the world without the SWORD. No way!

The bottom line, dear Abdullah, is that Islam is a faith based religion like Judaism and Christianity. There is no proof that any of these three religions is the true one given by God. We are not even sure if God exists. We can only BELIEVE that He/She exists. We don't know whether angels exist and if one of them gave God's actual words to Muhammad 1400 years ago. We can only BELIEVE that something like that happened.

Why should we be killing each other over such a situation?

I say;
You did not provide us with any proof that, Islam was spread by the sword. You are just repeating what the evangelical Christians keep dishing out without proof.

Proof of Islam is not spread by sword is simple, visit any Muslim majority country such as Palestine, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait Morocco etc. and you will still see indigenous people there who are Christians from centuries to centuries without converting to Islam. This shows Islam did not force convert anyone but people were attracted to it because of truth and it is from God.

If freedom of speech and expression is for some people but not others then it is not freedom of speech but freedom to discriminate. So the west must bow their head in shame for promoting freedom to discriminate.

If the Jews and the Christians who blamed our prophet in various reasons did not blame his marriage of a young woman, then that is normal at that time and you cannot use todays modern standard to judge someone thousands of years ago who was not blamed at that time because it was normal for all at that time. Putting the age of marriage to 16,17,18,19 etc. was a very recent in the 1950s. It means before then, no body can hold anyone responsible for marrying a young woman.

There is no record to prove our prophet marriage to his younger wife harmed her in any way, but it was rather a good romantic marriage with children and the wife became a good teacher and a leader.

So many people including Christians like younger women today, but they do not marry them, instead they take them as mistresses and having sex with them without marriage.

Do not bring sura 9:5 as it is every Christian attack on Islam. the same sura says "stop attacking them if the stop attacking you" which you omit. It is about defence.

In the Bible, they are more verses of killings including innocent babies and children. Is it logical to attach those barbaric action to Jesus? because he is the God of the Bible?

I'm missing the parallel here. Free speach allows for expression of an idea as well as critisism of the idea. But no one commanded that Dan Brown be killed. No one went to Dan Brown's house and killed all its occupants

John Calvin killed Michael Servetus because he wrote against Christian Trinity. Protestants, Catholics and Mormons killed each other until secularism took over by force. Who is fighting isis and other extremist Muslisms? Muslims are fighting their extremists with the help of the west and Christian extremists must also be fought by Christians and preaching of killings of anyone in church must stop.

Its important to note that Arab is not a racial classification; an Arab is almost like an American in that people classified as Arab today could be Caucasian (white people), Asiatic or even Arabized Africans. In the beginning there was some level of mutual respect between the Blacks and the more lighter skinned Arabs. However, as Islam and the demand for enslaved Blacks grew, so did racism toward Africans.

As casual association with Black skin and slave began to be established, racist attitudes towards Blacks began to manifest in Arabic language and literature. The word for slave - Abid - became a colloquialism for African. Other words such as Haratin express social inferiority of Africans.
