The letter from J.B Danquah recounting his ordeal at Nsawam prison is just a modicum of atrocities Nkrumah unleashed on his political opponents.
I have been watching the Black Americans march in Selma, Alabama where the white racist KKK Policemen used dogs, canons of water to disperse the Black peace marchers and it always brings tears to my eyes when I watch it but reading J.B Danquahs letter to President Nkrumah made the Selma marchers ordeal a picnic in the park.
How could Nkrumah had been so cruel he even denied J.B's wife to even visit him.
Poetic justice was served though when Nkrumah's wife, Fathia and the children deserted him when he went to exile in Guinea and died alone a lonely man.

Who do you blame if Ghana is broke? Since when did you come to realize that Ghana is broke, and what has happened to your better agenda? In just a little over two years ago you supported your party's propaganda mouth pieces( Okujeto, Fiifi Kwetey, Quashiga, Felix and co) to tell the whole world that Ghana was the second or third fastest growing economy in the whole wide world amidst the shouting from rooftops, the attainment of single digits inflation. Now the reality on the ground has caught up with you stealers. Where were you when all Trokosi chief openly supported the wrongful payment of judgement debt to Woyome? You see when it suit you it is fine! By the way, can you ask Francis Kwarteng this same stupid question whenever he come here with those needless historical accounts of your demigod, Kofi Nwiah the brutal dictator? Our democratic credentials would have been one of the enviable in the world had Nkrumah not viewed himself as someone repository of all wisdom and, also, treacherously imposed himself as a life president of my Ghana.

The African is known to have a destructive tendencies of his fellow African in his gene and will go to lengths to seek and destroy the most sacred of his kind. This characteristic was evident during the slave trade era, where the Africans fought among themselves and captured their own kind and sold them into slavery for useless things like rum, mirror, and gunpowder. But this time they are destroying each other because of stupid partisan politics.
The ignorant African refers to Nkrumah as a brutal dictator, while the enlightened and more sophisticated Canadians refer to Pierre Elliot Trudeau as a highly intellectual PM who contained the FLQ during the October crises, even though both two men used the same method of containment. We Africans are doomed for lack of knowledge and sheer stupidity.

"His old age and his years of innumerable services to the nation had failed to save him from the degradation of imprisonment without trial. This was my saddest moment in prison; how could one ever forgive and forget this ingratitude to a patriot who had given his best years to the service of our nation?" -- JOE Appiah.
‘He was too intellectually honest to be a success in the politics of his days’---- Obafemi Awolowo.

And for Berko who was wondering whether Nkrumah received JB's letter. Let it be known that Azikiwe, Nkrumah's mentor wrote to Nkrumah to release him from Prison but he refused.
This is the man who wanted to UNITE Africa while imprisoning those who brought him back to Ghana. So how was he expecting Kenneth Kaunda, Julius Nyerere, Jomo Kenyantta, etc to leave their status to come and serve him?

Even a person with the heart made of stone would be touched by the contents of Dr Danquah's letter. However, I am also saddened by the entrenched positions taken by Nkrumahists and Danquah-Busia traditions on this matter. In that scenario, the lessons to be learnt would be forgotten.
First, as a human rights practitioner, I must condemn any acts of depriving people of their fundamental human rights and subjecting them to inhuman and degrading treatment as evident in the letter. What was wrong was wrong and still wrong. No matter what crime/s Danquah might have committed, he ought to have been put before court for him to defend himself. He should have been given good medical treatment.
I am also not a fun of relativism and therefore disagree with those who say, it was a sign of the time. Even if Danquah had been involved in terrorism or any attempt to kill Nkrumah, he should have been tried before a competent court or tribunal and given the right to defend himself. For those who may want to justify what happened by referring to how George Bush administration' treatment of terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, that was also wrong and is still wrong.
It is equally wrong to describe Nkrumah as a fraudster, fake and an imposter. "Nkrumah himself was a fraud, having concocted an evil plan to supplant the true leaders of the nation right from the beginning, and having succeeded in imposing a sham independence and freedom whose actual meaning intelligent analysts will forever find confounding". Dr SAS, I find part of or this statement very unfortunate. Are you suggesting that Ghana's independence was an imposition and a sham by Nkrumah?
I believe that the best way to learn from past mistakes is not to say everything was wrong simply because we disagree with either the person or an ideology. That in itself is part of our developmental problems as a nation. In fact, as a nation we have not learnt our lessons from past mistakes. Today in Ghana, innocent people are languishing in prisons just because they are poor. In fact, they have not been tried and convicted but rather on remand for years. Again, inmates are denied adequate medical care leading to their untimely death That is 50 years after what happened to Dr Danquah. How can we learn lessons from that and ensure that citizens are not abused by the state by depriving them of their human dignity and freedom?
In my personal view, the 50th anniversary of Dr Danquah's tragic death should be used in Ghana to identify victims of prison system and miscarriages of justice so that they can gain their freedom. Action is taken to improve health facilities for prisoners, etc. That would be a more deserving tribute to Dr Danquah than this evil versus good argument on Ghanaweb.

Splendid, Kofi. The educated elites in Ghana are the cause of our downfall. We use every occasion or incident to divide our people; we have become masters and commanders of "divide and rule" system which was used by our colonialist.
Think of Mills who came out with this "Founder's day" instead of the "Founders day" I wonder how could a leader with any wisdom and intellect try to sideline those had already started fighting for independence and thought it proper and fitting to bring in Nkrumah. HOW?
And like you said about a better tribute; PP, PFP and NPP had been here with us and yet, none of these parties had come out to celebrate this man and his work. They only talk about JBD or Busia when NDC or CPP come out with anything about Nkrumah. Even Rawlings, the uneducated man thought it wise to name TECH after Nkrumah and yet, the so called brilliant people in NPP could not come out with anything to uplift the name of JBD or Busia.
Mind you, I am not here talking about tribalism or parochial interests, but had NPP come out with idea of abolishing that stupid July 1st day and replaced it with "FOUNDERS DAY," Mills would not have had that luxury to divide the Nation with Nkrumah's day. Also, had NPP chosen to build a Universities in the Eastern Region and Brong Ahafo and named it after Danquah and Busia respectively, I don't think the Nkrumahists or anyone would have raised a voice against that.
As it stands now, the Volta University and UDC may be named after Mills and Rawlings respectively one day. And when that happens, the NPP will braying and barking with JBD this or that. So yes, the good thing that should happen is learning from our mistakes and it would have been better to use this occasion to set up an institution for freedom and justice for ALL citizens of Ghana.
The fact is, NO pen or articles or any man can blot out the name of Nkrumah from the minds of Africa. There are leaders like Seretse Khama who excelled and did more for their Country than what Nkrumah did for Ghana, and yet only few Africans know who he is.
YES, a better tribute to JBD is needed.

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. None of us and by that I mean those who came before us, those of us who are still breathing and all those who will come after us. What's the use of history if it does not help to improve the quality of life while we sojourn on this part of planet earth we call Ghana, our homeland, and which gives us the right to identify ourselves as Ghanaians?
We owe our ancestors a debt of gratitude for their various sacrifices of which we are the proud beneficiaries and the only way we can pay back the investments they made in several ways is to actualize their dreams for us and reciprocate their sacrifices and kindnesses by dreaming even bigger for the generations that will come after us. All our generations past, present and future are inter-connected and it's important that we learn from the lives and times of our past ancestors, their good and bad and leave our nation better than it was bequeathed to us. We are repeating their mistakes when we refuse to see eye to eye. What we need to do is bury our pride, bury our foolishness, bury the hatchet and reason together.

Obviously Nkrumah made many mistakes. He shouldn't have allowed Danquah to die in prison. Perhaps the one party state was a bad idea and he should not have made himself into a tin god who wanted to rule forever.
But it's not exactly correct to call him a "brutal" dictator. Things were worse under the bad years of Rawlings.
But the fact still remains that Nkrumah did many good things to Ghanaians that would not have been the case under a rule by the so-called Danquah-Busia group. Nkrumah rapidly built up the educational system of the country. He built clinics all over the country which were virtually free to attend. Water projects were being inaugurated all over the place. Nkrumah stamped his feet on tribalism in the country. There was nothing like Ewes and Asantes hating each other during Nkrumah's time. No way!
I am talking from what I saw myself, not what I read from books or was told by others.
And Nkrumah never amassed personal wealth even though he was not strong in stamping put corruption of some of his ministers.
We saw what happened during the brief rule of Busia. It was not paradise at all!!!
When people cry for Nkrumah's times, it is these positive things they want, not the negative ones. Times have changed and even the staunchest supporters of Nkrumah will not want detention without trial, one party state, PDA, life presidency, over-adoration of one person, etcetera.
But we want leaders with the dedication and vision of Nkrumah without the detentions. We have not had that since the man was overthrown. There's nobody in the current crop of NPP leadership that has thar vision. The ndc lacks it too.
It is just political claptrap to call NDC bad but NPP good. I see nothing good in either of them!

I recognize that you're a middle-of-the-road guy and I do appreciate your fair-mindedness .Yes, Nkrumah did many good things but I was old enough to witness quite a bit of Nkrumah's era and I can say without the slightest shadow of doubt that Nkrumah as President could be described as an under-achiever. Contrary to your belief, the Danquah-Busia group would have fared far better with the wealth the British colonialists bequeathed to us on attainment of self-rule. For your information the planning for most of the projects Nkrumah is credited for had been executed by the British colonial administrators and were "hand-me-downs" from the out-going administration. Any ambitious patriot could have equalled Nkrumah's projects record or fared even better with the millions of British pounds and project plans bequeathed to Ghana. Besides, while Nkrumah was an avowed socialist leaning unapologetically on the Soviets for ideology and assistance, the Danquah-Busia group were democrats whose belief in a free market economy dates way back to the pre-independence era. Apparently ideology was a major source of contention between Nkrumah and the Danquah-Busia group. Nkrumah prevailed and the rest is history. The Leninist socialist ideology crumbled and the mighty USSR collapsed.Russia coming out of the ashes have since adopted the free market economy. So have the Chinese. As for Ghana we adopted the free market economy in the 1990s under Rawlings, more than 50 years after it was advocated for by the opposition. We have made modest gains but we're still tagged as under-achievers considering our potential. The reason is fierce rivalry persist between the old CPP and the Danquah-Busia group. The fault line runs deep.
Nkrumah squandered our financial wealth trying to foster the rest of Africa. How has his profligacy helped Ghana's nation building project and what is our reward? Thumbing our nose! Nkrumah should have concentrated his efforts in building and strengthening democracy in Ghana and should have thought foremost about Ghana's growth and development instead of spreading himself thin over Africa. After all you must be standing firmly on the ground to be able to lift up a fallen neighbor from off the ground back to his feet.
As a nation we have not learned much from our past. Nkrumah, Danquah and Busia being humans had their shortcomings and if we continue to gloss over their failings we will continue to be divided as they were and will keep repeating their mistakes to our detriment. It won't hurt any of us if we bury our pride and bury the hatchet and do a little reality check NOW, that's also called today, about our past heroes and make a vow like the Israelis after WW2 holocaust and say "NEVER AGAIN"!!!

Thanks, ol boy. I've seen that you and I were born on the other side of our independence so we saw something of the Nkrumah regime. There are not many of us left on ghanaweb. Most of those who discuss Nkrumah cannot remember his rule. Gabby Otchere was not even born. Okoampa and SAS cannot remember. Kwarteng wasn't born then either. As for me, I was in Middle School and I remember that day he was overthrown like yesterday. I am sure you do too.
Yes, the difference between Nkrumah and the Danquah people was ideological but it was more than that. Both wanted power so much for themselves - a personal thing.
I was not a member of GYP (my parents wouldn't allow me) but I remember the British didn't develop the country much at all. On independence there were only few schools, clinics and other things. Nkrumah accelerated these things. I was in Primary School when he instituted free and compulsory education. I don't think the Danquah people, with their laissez faire thinking, would have done that. That doesn't mean they, too, didn't have the welfare of the country at heart but they went about it in a different way. They would have made Ghana like Ivory Coast - with just a few of the big cities developed and the rest of the country poor.
Look at when Busia came to power. Within 27 months, he had sacked aliens from Ghana (some of those Nigerians sacked were living in Ghana even before our independence), alienated Ewes (many of whom voted for Danquah in the last presidential elections in which he stood), he said university students should pay fees (which would have ruled people like me out of university education). Busia was tribalistic, vindictive and he didn't himself respect the courts much.
Yes, Nkrumah had faults - lots of them, and we shouldn't be blind to those faults. But I think SAS goes overboard in condemning him.
SAS, Gabby and the likes of Okoampa are just playing partisan politics by the positions they take on Nkrumah. All they want is to have NPP in power and they think, falsely, that NPP is better than NDC. I doubt that very much.
I am not Nkrumaist but I won't object at all to the positive aspects of Nkrumah in our politics again - the concern for the ordinary man (call it communism if you like), the total unity of the country no matter what tribe you come from and the fact that the man was greedy for power but not at all greedy for personal wealth the way today's politicians, especially those in the NPP camp, are. Look at how greedy Kufuor is.
I don't endorse Danquah's incarceration. Even if he was condemned for treachery, he should have been given better prison conditions and a fair trial. Even so, Nsawam Prison was the best we had then. Danquah's death was most unfortunate. Even CPP diehards didn't like it and they didn't rejoice and I suspect that Nkrumah too didn't like it either. I remember faintly that we mourned the death of Patrice Lumumba in Ghana more than we did that of Danquah which was unfortunate. This letter that is circulating now may be taken out of some context. We don't read of Nkrumah's response to it or even if it was brought to his attention.
But, like you said, NEVER AGAIN for the bad aspects of Nkrumah's (and Rawlings') rule but not for the good things that Nkrumah did.

I respect your comments, especially your honesty and forthrightness. I do appreciate you very much. However I've issue with the much peddled falsehood that Danquah and Busia were elitists and would have developed only the big cities in much the same way as Houphet Boigny did in the Ivory Coast. That's baloney. Danquah never had the opportunity to be president so the hypothesis is unnecessary and unfair. I had a chance meeting with Dr Danquah when I was about 6-8 years old. It was on the day he was released from Nsawam Medium Security Prison. It was a beautiful saturday morning and I was heading to the house of my friend and Adabraka Presby Primary School mate, Yaw Amfo Kwakye, former Editor, Statesman. Yaw's family lived on the other side of the road, on the extreme end of the narrow strip of road in front of Tip Toe Gardens. As I approached from the direction of Nkrumah Circle to the first house on the Tip Toe road, I noticed a flurry of activity at the entrance to that house. I began rubber necking not knowing what was going on. I followed the crowd and made the bee line to the sitting room of the one storey house where a crowd had filled every space. I meandered my way to the front and standing there was Dr Danquah, narrating the circumstances of his arrest, ordeal in Nsawam Prison and his release.Dr Danquah picked me out easily because not only had I gate-crashed the event but I was the youngest person among the gathering. He smiled as he shook my tiny hand after his spell-bound narration. He wowed me with his gentleness, humility candor and his mental alertness. It's no wonder he made a lasting impression on me. Shortly after that chance encounter he was back in prison and never saw his modest home again. Nkrumah preyed on an innocent man and got him murdered just to further his political ambitions. Remember that Danquah was instrumental in bringing Nkrumah from the UK to serve as General Secretary of the UGCC.
I'm a very blessed and privileged Ghanaian. A few years after gate-crashing Dr Danquah's welcome reception and just after Nkrumah's overthrow, I had the singular honor again to see Dr Busia face to face. He was invited as a guest speaker at his alma mater, Mfantsipim School. It was a very impressive speech. He spoke impeccable English and he was very articulate but what impressed me most was the man's gentle spirit. He is meek and humble.
It's unfair to judge Danquah and Busia as elitist. When Busia became Prime Ministerhe started a decentralization program and in furtherance of that he embarked on rural electrification and cottage industries projects as a way of decongesting the cities and putting money in the pocket of the rural population. It pains my heart to hear that Danquah and Busia were elitist but that's the dirty way of politics. I remember in those days the CPP propagandists used to be-little Danquah's academic achievements by describing him to the village folks as "the fake doctor who never learned how to use the hypodermic needle". Look, bro, it's all politics. Lies and propaganda.

Interestingly, I had also just started secondary school when Busia became PM.
But I don't suppose you met or saw Nkrumah... You must have if you lived in Accra...
But the most interesting thing in your response is the frequent use of the word "elitist" - a word that I studiously avoided using in my own write up. Perhaps you didn't notice that...
Anyway, you're right that a lot of politics went on in those days - and still do.

This article by Adjei Sarfo and the pride he display with his classrom earned attributes are those of classic classroom educated but ignorant soul.
Why was Ghana free from the British colonial rule and yet remain loyal subjects of the British commonwealth if we are truly free from the shackles of the British colonial rule? Why do we continue to practice and govern the country with rules and institutional setups of the British era? Are we not free and independent nation, Adjei Sarfo? If your article presumes and proposes that a free nation is equivalent to people living without law and order and the freedoms to engage in acts of terrorism then you are as sad as the breed of past and current crop of Ghanaian leaders who have destroyed Ghana touting freedom and liberty while Ghana continues to exist at developing nation status incapable of solving the basic problems of electrical power and effective distribution of pipe water to homes across Ghana.
Why would the greatest democratic nation on earth, the United States of America enshrine in its constitution freedoms, liberties and the pursuit of happiness of all the people on the land and yet deny those very rights to its African American people, native American people and others centuries after ratification and adoption of the constitution? If at this time of your classrooms earned accomplishments you continue to be confounded by the fact that there are no absolutes in life then your education and thought processes lacks the logical processing inherently tied to classroom education.
As you live comfortably in a more developed nation look around you or take the time to read and you may just find out that citizens are being held up in prison facilities because they run afoul with the laws of the nation. More recently people are held without trial for engaging in acts of chaos brought on by terrorism. Nkrumah would have not been worth a day in class of his entire education carrier if he had allowed the folly of freedoms without boundaries to enable saboteurs the likes of Danquah to roam freely to infect the little minds of people who confuse classroom earned credentials with wisdom. Once again Dr. Adjei Sarfo I remind you that there are no absolutes in life period and it is about time even tribal zealots stop the shamelessness they bring to claiming tribal superiority as they subjugate members of other tribes while they talk about freedoms and or liberties.

These days every FOOL decorates himself with a doctor title, Abeeku, does it surprise you that right from the outset “DR. SAS” buys into a crap that is flawed, where historical facts are blinded or blanked out, of which more later. The byword for this fake letter is – Lies have short legs.
There is always a reaction to an action. Kwame Nkrumah was not a sadist like the callous Mate Mehu bomb throwers who didn’t care about the collateral damage their explosives might cause. All nations are governed by rule of law and without exception. A disgruntled few aren’t the yardstick for the majority of the people. Five assassination attempts on Nkrumah’s life and these bloody stupid guys come here to talk drivel. OMFG! Smack my ass and call me sally!
The NPP Mate Mehu Folks have always been fed on the travesty of TRUTH. They lie anytime they open their mouths because their narratives are all about yesi yesi not based on facts.
The chronology of events that led to their arrest has to be kept in sequence without a cut. These NPP Mate Mehu revisionists will not have their way as long as I live.
When Kwame Nkrumah was arrested in Saltpond 1948 with the rest of the pack due to unrest in Accra they were first sent to Kumasi. There they spent three days and were later transferred on an 8 hour bus journey to Tamale.
They were placed in a bungalow at first but Kwame Nkrumah who was under special surveillance was separated from the pack 3 days later and taken to Lawra further north where he was put in hut cell and spent 6 weeks under solitary confinement. The rest of them enjoyed their dandy lifestyles. Since they - by this I mean the five of them including Danquah - were treated fairly well by their colonial captives; they all started blaming Nkrumah for jeopardizing their lives.
These became apparent when Nkrumah was brought to Accra to join the other five. They disowned him much to his surprise. The Watson commissioners concluded that Nkrumah was largely to be blamed for the disorders. In their report, dated June 1948 which anyone of you forumers can access, they stated that” the UGCC did not really get down to business until the arrival of Mr. Kwame Nkrumah on 16 December 1947. That is CRUST and the TRUTH of the matter. Please Google the full report of the Watson commission on the internet for your reference.
When will Mate Mehu stop telling fat lies? Kwame Nkrumah built the five star Nsawam prisons to make prisoners life much comfortable due to his own firsthand experience at James Town prisons where he nearly served two years. Nkrumah won the 1951 elections even when he was a jailbird overwhelmingly. Nkrumah stood firm, you don’t bargain with terrorist. Period! Nkrumah pardoned Danquah twice (1959 and 1962). Danquah never kept his word. Nkrumah was not ready to be a third time fool. Once bitten twice shy.
Danquah’s first wife jumped ship to join Nkrumah and became the first woman parliamentarian in the Gold Coast. Danquah was not a voting material so he lost twice to his own cousin Ofori Atta. Today the treasonists are praising the British where it fits their whims but the same Mate Mehu NPP contested every election in the then Gold Coast when they lost twice in 1954 and 1956 to the CPP. What a bitter irony of history! Nkrumah the mastermind won every election hands down but these brutes wanted to cause commotion. NLM was formed in the courtyard of the Asantehene. Baffoe Akoto Hello!
Tawiah Adamarfio was also a UP member who jumped ship to join the CPP and worked his way to the top echelon but he was a UP mole. He later showed his true colours in the Kulungugu bomb operation which maimed a School Girl and many hundreds. Why are you "DR. SAS" not lamenting this barbaraic and cowardice actions? These are hard histrorical facts.
Hardly had Ghana regain her independence, these terrorist began to sabotage the administration of Nkrumah’s government because these knuckleheads believed that they were the only anointed custodians of Oman Ghana.
Look, Kwame Nkrumah has been vindicated by taking action against terrorist more that 50 years ago. The PDA which was preemptive in nature to safeguard our new nation was imported from India. It is today being applied by all nations fighting terrorism. The patriot act in USA and its UK version has seen a spate of anti-terrorism legislation all over the world. Today in the 21st century there is detention without trial in GITMO on the Cuban enclave by a democratic state called USA. They even sent terrorist to countries where they knew very well that they will be tortured. Water boarding was the order of the day. The US president Obama recently condemned these actions by the CIA and FBI.
The Mate Mehu of yester year is the Al Queda, Taliban, Boko Haram, Al Shabab of today. Nkrumah
These Danquach Institute guys have doctored a purported letter of Danquah only to end up with miscarriage of a letter. The wording and phrasing of the letter in certain paragraphs are suspicious.
"Secondly, you will recall that barely a month after our detention in the North in 1948 we were brought down to Accra and released to appear before a Commission of Enquiry set up to investigate the justice or otherwise of our arrest of our arrest and detention. We duly appeared before the Watson Commission and made history for Gold Coast and Ghana. It resulted in the finding that the Burns Constitution was outmoded at birth, with a recommendation that our country should attain its independence within ten years, and that a Constitutional Committee (the Coussey Committee) should be set up to lay down the foundations of such independence and the steps to be taken towards its attainment."
Purportedly, this was a letter from Danquah. But you can flog a dead horse that Danquah could not have written those lines knowing very well it entails risks of not being pardon by Nkrumah because it was a complete lie and the whole story has been blanked out to make Danquah and the colonial administrators glow. Yes they were first brought to a bungalow in Tamale but Nkrumah was separated from the pack and put in a solitary confinement - a cell hut in Lawra. Secondly at the Watson commission they disowned Nkrumah. So the above letter could not have come from Danquah. It was as if he was shooting himself in both legs. Danquah is lazy minded but I don't think he is that dumb. Well I could be mistaken! Who knows?
As no particulars of any kind were provided in the grounds for detention to indicate how the Government of Ghana came to formulate such a disgraceful charge against me, I spent in the prison here the greater part of January and February 1964 to write a review of the whole of my activities in "recent months" (roughly, from June 1962 [last release from detention] to January 1964). This writing was done by way of "Representations" in answer to the charge...
In most parts of the letter the body has been doctored to suit the whims of the forger but hey we don't know Mate Mehu NPP to cherish the truth. The Mate Mehu NPP cherishes illusions. Liars are always espoused because lies have short legs. When will Ghana stop producing educated fools?! Shame on Danquah Institute! Shame on so called DR. SAS.

If you claim to be a Criminal lawyer then you should know that the henchmen in a crime scene are the target of detectives. How did you get you degree?
2. Kwame Nkrumah abolished all opposition and, declared Ghana one-party state and declared himself life president.
Nana Ansah: The opposition of Mate Mehu in effect imploded because they were fragmented and no match for Nkrumah's CPP. Busia took flight and went into self imposed exile to plot against Ghana. These guys from Baffoe Akoto to you name it were treasonists. What do you think would happen to Snowdon if he returns to America?
3. Appropriated to himself the power to appoint and dismiss judges as and when he pleased.
Nana Ansah: He was voted into power as president. The one Party state was passed constitutionally. You cannot blame Nkrumah when the opposition is fragmented and consequently imploded.
4. Created a personality cult wherein he was Messiah and god and fountain of wisdom, with his statues and effigy all over Ghana and on our currency.
Look DR SAS in Ghana people are given or adopt titles. What did Afrifa call himself? There was only one statue in front of parliament house which is now in KN Mausoleum and I guess UST no more. Please stop making a fun of yourself. Kwame Nkrumah introduced the Cedis and Pesewa which is legally tender for Ghana. The British has the head of queen on the Pound. The Americans Lincoln so what is wrong with Nkrumah's Image on the Cedi? By the way the Big Six are on present notes. Why don't you fume on that?
5. Abolished the due process of law and turned himself into the law.
Were Tawiah Adamarfio and cohorts tried or not. We had the first woman Judge during his tenure so what are you talking about. Are talking about bias Judges? Ghana does not Need them at time. The president of America has Veto powers and can influence the supreme court through his appointment.Regardless of what you think about Nkrumah he did not kill any of his nemesis. Danquah was pardoed by Nkrumah twice (1959 and 1962) but he never kept his word. Danquah was a lawyer so he knew the rules of the game. Ignorance is no excuse!
You can live in your own self-denial and delusion just as Nkrumah, but the fact still remains that you are slaves to a dictators illusion.

Where did you get this, in Germany where you find yourself? Certainly, not in America. I have read stupid things from some of you Nkrumahists trying to equate PDA to Patriot Act. I bet none of you have read the Patriot Act, yet stupidly, they quote that ad infinitum. Can you cite one example where an American Citizen had been put in Prison indefinitely without trial?
And please, don't come back reminding me of Guantanamo bay as some ignorant Nkrumahists do because there aren't no American Citizen there. Unless of course, you think JB Danquah was a foreigner.
I don't have time to get into other areas, because most of you Nkrumahists are like the proverbial Chichidodo in Ayi Kwei Armah's book- the beautiful ones are not yet born. They hates excrements of all kinds but feed on maggots. Meaning- HYPOCRITES.
You live in Germany where rule of law applies but still supports barbaric laws like PDA. Again do us a favor and give us one example where an AMERICAN citizen had been jailed indefinitely.

What a waste of brilliant minds and souls such as J.B. Danquah, Arkoh Agyie and co ? I almost eight years old when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966. And I have always thought about him as hero until today after reading this article and Dr J B Danquah's letter pleading Nkrumah for his release. I am so saddened and heartbroken that Nkrumah treated his compatriots with such a contempt. He then took to us Russia and into communism and socialism which are the root cause of corruption. He also wasted our money fighting for the total liberation of Africa and its unification which isn't meant to be in my opinion. Kwame Nkrumah was a fraud for real. He was fake and imposter. The real and true sons and daughters of Ghana who would have brought us true democracy, freedom and prosperity were all incasrated, tortured and killed because they saw what was coming so they opposed him. Ghana should disband CPP party because I believe they have the same agenda. Nkrumah truelly got what he deserved. Which was, to die in exile. Everything Nkrumah should be destroyed. I will never think of him as I used to again. It's appalling to hear that he subjected his fellow country men to maltreatment which was the opposite of what the colonial masters did. Isn't that sad? I hope there are no longer Young Pioneers left among us now. I think Nkrumah felt that those guys were smarter than he was so to silence these bright fellas he had to apply dictatorship.

The subject matter of law when being tackled by people who are said to have read law and teaches it should not be a speculation, myths and illusions.
It is most unfortunate that you Dr. Samuel Asafo Adjei you are putting dictatorship into speculation here. dictatorship should not be about your myths and illusions, but must connote what dictatorship is.
It is on record that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah never use violence as a means to attain political freedom and sovereignty for the people of Ghana. Thus the Convention Peoples's Party was not a partisan formation. Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP form the government through universal adult suffrage and not through an armed struggle. Kwame Nkrumah through out his rule never did anything contrary to the then existing constitution. He ruled by the constitution and adhered to it.
Dr. Samuel Adjei Sarfo it is an irony and ridiculous to have the illusion that a act done under and in accordance with the constitution of Ghana is undemocratic according to your unwritten and none existing constitution of Ghana. It is the adherence to the constitution, the legal framework of a country that determines if an executive is acting in a democratic manner.
I am of the view that you were not against the British act of Prevention of Communism and Prevention Detention Act, both under which Kwame Nkrumah was detained and later imprisoned because he appeal to the British authorities to free his people whom they took hostage since the Bond of 1866.
You may have been a student when the British Act of Prevention of Terrorism and the US laws that torture and imprison people without trial.
Law must be fair, just, without prejudice and abused by a person or nation because he or she has the military means to do so. Thus the principle of what is good for the goose is good for the gander should apply everywhere. Charles Taylor is held for crimes he is alleged to have committed in Serra Leone, but George Bush can not be held for a crime committed in Guantanamo a US military base on a territory he seized from Cuba.
To the issue of terrorism. It is a fact that members of the CPP did not attack any youth organization setup by the British colonial government with arms and bombs. They did not also attack the governors resident with arms. I happen to work with a woman who was a member of the Young Pioneers who lost her leg up to her tight as a result of the bomb throne at here and others by elements of the United Party under the leadership of Danquah and Busia. Subject to the constitution of Ghana in 1962 when that incident took place, under UN and ILO Conventions every Ghanaian was granted the right to assembly, association and most of all the right to conscience. In 1962 the UP was in parliament and could table a resolution that the CPP does not have the right to association, thus can not form the Young Pioneers. That is a democratic form of doing things and not going about killing and maiming children like the Talibans and Boko Haram because you do not like the organization they belong to.
There is a matter of a person cutting his own nose to amuse another party because whiles people are against the formation of a youth organization by Ghanaians they support those which were brought to us by the colonialist. People should know that they can not have the freedom of association and assembly and at the same time deprive others of it through terror. Who is then democratic a person who use constitutional means to achieve his aims or a person who do that through terror.
The matter of illegality is that the constitution that brought Busia to power in 1969 will be to be illegal, since it was not done through universal adult suffrage. It is on record that members of the CPP who were illegally detained by the NLC were still in prison when Busia was overthrown by Acheampong on 13/1/1972 yet we are told that Busia is a democrat. Busia was an adviser to the NLC when Boye Moses was caged like an ape and paraded through the capital towns of the regions in Ghana in 1967. He was the special adviser when student who were studying in the then socialist countries were recall thus destroying their future and some of them will later commit suicide. Samuel Adjei Sarpong let us all but our effusions aside and reason like adults and not like infants with disorder.

The man J.B with all his Phd allowed himself to be used as a puppet by imperialist to subvert and thwart the development agenda of Ghana. The CIA agent who for the convenience of the time consumed by parochial partisan interest and hatred for the man Kwame Nkrumah masterminded the throwing of bombs. That is his legacy.
J.B regretted his short sighted actions just like many of his who could not see beyond their noses
Please spare us the pain of reminding us his evil deeds by sabotaging this country.
The letter from J.B Danquah recounting his ordeal at Nsawam prison is just a modicum of atrocities Nkrumah unleashed on his political opponents.
I have been watching the Black Americans march in Selma, Alabama where the wh ...

JB was arrested because he was a cia agent working against Ghana. That was his 2nd arrest. His 1st arrest he was pardoned by Nkrumah, yet he was still working for the cia to destroy the nation.

You must constantly remind society of any atrocity to prevent future occurrence. That is why we should never excuse Nkrumah and Rawlings's dictatorial and repressive regimes.
Indeed , you are a true nyansaba who tells nyansasem to all and those wound up machines who never stop disturbing our ears with their tin and mean god called Nkrumah
Nkrumah was a village tyrant who used the platform Ghana offered him to exercise his insecurity by incarcerating anyone who crossed his path. Jerry Rawlings took a leaf from him with his cowardice that he showed in his pencha ...

Who formed the Action Troopers to terrorism opponents ?
Obviously Nkrumah made many mistakes. He shouldn't have allowed Danquah to die in prison. Perhaps the one party state was a bad idea and he should not have made himself into a tin god who wanted to rule forever.
