I suspect it may be because many Ghanaians, especially those living abroad, are very suspicious of these so-called NGOs working in Ghana and claiming to be do gooders. They may do some good to the people but end up doing a lot more good to their own pockets.
Do-goodism shall not become a means of enriching oneself...
Last summer, when I went to my village, I met a Nordic woman who was building a huge orphanage and a public toilet with bathing facilities in my holy village. I talked at length with her and asked where her funding was coming from. She very proudly told me that every single pesewa spent on the project was from her own pocket. She explained that she had sold a business she founded in her native country and is investing the money in the project. She does not have to beg anybody for money and she does not have to account to anybody else apart from herself.
There are some local Ghanaian owned NGOs in the village too and this Nordic woman had seen how these Ghanaians managing the projects have become far richer than those they claim to be helping, through the help they are giving them. That is why she is proud that she is funding her project herself. It is making the other NGOs jealous...
