Romney dropped out because he was not going to win the Republican primaries in 2016. Many of the Republicans don't care for Ronmey, who is seen as a "Massachusetts liberal" in a conservative party, they had to hold their noses and "settle" for him because of the bizarre folks in the primary line up. "Already marketed" does not matter in the US because it is not hard to market the next one. In the US the parties have many televised debates before primaries so you get to know what "substance" they are are made of. Unfortunately the system in Ghana is a bit different, it is more like chieftaincy, it is his turn type of thing so you never get substance. Are Akuffo Addo and Mahama the best candidates perhaps not but that is what the country gets because of the way we think. At least the NPP went through primaries to select Nana, the NDC just hand picked Mahama and perhaps have no plans of another primaries like they were forced to do with Konadu/Mills. The issue described in article applies to both parties, they don't go for substance. It is more about ones ethnic background etc., rather than merit and competence.

President Mahama's abysmal performance in office is a huge albatross around his weary neck and he's set to lose the 2016 presidential election against Nana Akuffo Addo. Because of this you have tried every trick in the playbook to scuttle Nana's third presidential bid. The latest is begging him to copy from Mitt Romney's recent decision to drop out from the Republican primaries to elect a presidential candidate. It was the movers and shakers of the GOP that impressed upon Romney, a fellow Republican not to run. In your case, it is an exiled nondescript group of the NDC that's asking the strong Presidential candidate of your rival party to drop from the race. It's in Romney's own interest to drop out because he can't win against a formidable Democratic candidate. In your case you're asking the formidable opponent to step down for a weak NDC President Mahama. It probably makes sense to morons but not to the NPP. Oh, please!
FYI, Ronald Reagan, the 40th US President was 70 years old when he became President in 1981. He was defeated in his run for the GOP presidential nomination in 1968 and in 1976 but won both the nomination and general election in 1980, defeating incumbent Jimmy Carter, a democrat.
