Nana Ansah: Prof. Lungu, you are being very gracious here. My take on this is; what is all this brouhaha about Danquah? This lazy mind Danquah was not even popular in his Akyem backyrad otherwise he would not have lost twice in a back to back elections within a short space of time between 1954 ans 1956. By 1954 Danquah has sank into oblivion so much so that Busia was running the show as opposition leader. These are hard FACTS the Mate Meho intellectual dwarfs fail to recognize.

Kwame Nkrumah was winning elections even as a jailbird behind bars. So for these perennial sore losers who claimed that elections under British auspices were rigged is laughable. We all know which side the British favoured. Look Kwame Nkrumah was no friend of the British. But the British could not cook the elections for these Nation wreckers who saw themselves as the natural custodians of Oman Ghana because Nkrumah won by a landslide victory. It is a myth for these knaves to believe that they are the sole custodians of Ghana. Ghana belongs to all Ghanaians. Deal with it!

So for the Mate Mehu to claim that Nkrumah rigged the 1960 presidential elections is not only ludicrous but flies against every logic. Danquah could not even win as a candidate of Akyem, so how much more could he have done that Nation wide???!!! Danquah is just a province politician with province thinking nothing more.

Kwame Nkrumah defined what Ghana is through the Institutions, economic and industrial strides Ghana made within a short space of time hence Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana. Kwame Nkrumah liberated our follow Africans from the shackles of colonialism. Kwame Nkrumah made the world listen to Africa. As with any visioary it is the Vision itself that distinguishes him from others. Kwame Nkrumah was light years ahead of Danquah and the rest.

Kwame Nkrumah owes these Mate Meho treasonists no apology and does not want any forgivensess form traitors. If anything These Mate Meho terrorist owe Ghanaians an apology. They should stop playing the victim game and render genuine apology to Oman Ghana.

It is as if Al Qaeda is telling America, "we have forgiven you". What is more grotesque than that?!!!

Tell all these Danquahserie eaters that they could not debate us CPPians in the 50's and the 60's. And they cannot debate us on Facts today. After all we made free education possible for zthem otherwise they would be wallowing poverty of knowledge in their villages today. I will suggest that readers also take a look at Prof. Craig Atephen Wilder's book "EBONY & IVORY: RACE, SLAVERY, AND THE TROUBLED HISTORY OF AMERICA'S UNIVERISTIES," a thesis on how "slavery" literally built a number of America's elite universities.

Furthermore, I will like to draw readers' attentiong to one of your powerful, poignant observations. Here it goes:

"In closing, let's all remember that in an increasingly Global Village and against the developmental challenges in Ghana/Africa, precisely the type Nkrumah tried to forestall, J. B. Danquah will only matter to a small clique in Ghana. For, all will know that J. B. Danquah never invented all those things. That J. B. Danquah will not matter globally, until Danquah-Deathknell-Palanquin Supporters find a humble Ghana-centered way to make his legacy relevant for the entire world. Sadly, though, we see that they have not even begun to take the first humble and reasonable steps in that direction. A beautiful woman spends no time courting attention.Lungu, don't be offended if others call him a tyrant and a dictator for imprisoning Danquah without a charge or trial , declaring himself president for life, and instituting a one party rule. Additionally, to others, a great African leader wanting to unite Africa should never have interfered in the affairs of neighboring governments as Nkrumah did. May this explain why he was overthrown amist cheers and jubilation by majority of the citizenry? I wonder.

"...Nkrumah does no wrong..." is not discernible, the way the piece is written. And we do not believe that is the case, either.

Among other points, we are saying that "a tyrant and a dictator" ought to exist in context. Further, that there is something to celebrating "Life", rather than "Death". For, when we celebrate Life, we defy Death, to eternity.

Finally, on the other side, we talked a bit about context and balance. In what context is it the case that "A beautiful woman spends no time courting attention".

What is it that makes you think that is a fair, considerate, and relevant proposition, in this age?

The so-called professor that tried to embellish Nkrumah's economic record needs to go to School all over again. These types of socialist arguments could deceive Ghanaians in the 50s and 60s, but they cannot do so now. Nkrumah was the first leader to introduce unsustainable debt into this country by borrowing massively and unnecessarily to finance his whims and caprices. It was a misfortune that we had such a person as president immediately after the independence. He didn't lay a realistic economic foundation for sustainable development of the young nation at all, considering the amount of money that was at his disposal in those days.

Ghana had about one billion dollars in reserve when Nkrumah took over the reins of government from the colonial master. Could you imagine what the value of 1bn dollars was in the early fifties? Again, after 2years of his rule, cocoa prices at the world market rocketed and increased four-fold. But contrary to any sound economic planning, he did not reserve any fraction of the windfall for a rainy day as the Whiteman had done with only one fourth of the revenues he got from cocoa. So, what did Nkrumah do with all the revenue he got from the astronomical cocoa prices, and the big reserve he inherited that took many years to build for our financial stability and sustainable development?

The man just went on a spending spree both in Ghana and around the world, throwing his weight about and talking big. So when the cocoa prices fell close to the end of his rule, he was quick to point accusing fingers at the West, blaming them for manipulating cocoa prices to sabotage the economy of Ghana and overthrow his government. Finally, after misusing all the money mainly on useless prestigious projects, failed communist agricultural projects and whimsical mad rush industrialization projects that did not withstand the test of time, he also burdened the young nation with another billion dollars' debt before he was forced out of the country.

The truth is that, Nkrumah's ideas were unsuitable for growing the economy since the communist system lucks mechanisms and incentives that release energies of the people to create wealth. He, therefore, met a rich and confident country with huge potentials, and left it nearly bankrupt in some few years as a result of gross mismanagement.

No one, not Nkrumahist and surely not unbiased readers have ever made a claim for canonization of Nkrumah's sainthood but lying and exaggerations by Nkrumah haters has to be challenged unabated.

It is also true that majority of Ghanaians cheered and jubilated at Nkrumah's downfall but you may be surprised to know that artificial shortages of the so-called essential commodities,which was orchestrated by CIA and British Intelligence was the cause of their jubiliation of Nkrumah's downfall.I was very young but I remember very well Ghanaians had to queue for hours in order to buy soap,milk,sugar etc.I also remember large quantities of the so-called essential commodities were found dumped in the bush while ships loaded with sardines,mackerel,milk sugar etc were found to be unwholesome at Tema and Takoradi Harbour thereby causing scarcity and brewing dissatisfaction among Ghanaians-the work of CIA and British Intelligence.ORAL TRADITION is an important source of history.

Kwadwo is trying as hard as he can to fairly balance the record. The problem for us, though, is akin to US main Media/Journalists/TV in particular, their attempts to balance Fox New 24*7 political messaging with what they think is the American interest. They neglect that "Fair and Balanced" is actually unbalanced, in the US, in Europe, in Japan, and other places we've never had the means to monitor. They are entirely on a different plane. And so, they fail, as is now being demonstrated in the case of Brian Williams and the NBC News organization.

I sincerely believe that his policies had flaws and nothing is taken away from his legacy if Nkrumaists acknowledges those policy flaws.
In a documentary, Ambassador Mahoney described tearful Nkrumah afraid to even drive to on the street to open parliament. Yet days later he releases a book with unflattering remarks about the US, that at the time was helping to fund the Akosombo dam. This is high state political gamesmanship I am referring to and makes him a tragic fellow. To others, it may show his bravado, but in my humble opinion it connotes foolhardness. There was no way we would have survived politically given the raging Cold War climate at the time.

My Rebuttal:

The article by Prof Lungu was written as a response to others making certain claims against Nkrumah, e.g., that he was a "brutal dictator". Prof Lungu mentioned some of those things and set about to rebut the charges in the ongoing debate and he is being accused of one-sidedness? What kind of thinking is that? He wants and a pro and cons debate from him? Whoever heard of something like that in a debate? Is the dirt and mudslinging from the Matemeho Bloc not enough? So if Nkrumah had a sharp horn with which he gored people with and it is pointed out that many great leaders like him in history had one too, is that not putting things in a historical context too and therefore a valid form of argument? Context, ma fren, context!

My Comment:

No, no one ever claims that Nkrumah never did any wrong or made a bad decision. He did to his eternal regret. As he said, if he had known that Ghanaians were only interested in sardines and tinapa rather than roads, schools, factories, hospitals, etc., he'd have flooded the country with those things. We are thus compelled to defend what Nkrumah chose to do against the likes of Kwadwo and Ahoofe who have an agenda to demonise him and accuse him of being the cause of Ghana's problems today; rather than the truncation of his grand ideas and projects being the cause. A lot of people alive have no clue about what Nkrumah did for Ghana and was planning to do in terms of devt. If they said he squandered some monies left to us by the British, we must tell them what the monies were actually used for and point to the factories which various govts since his overthrow have been divesting at great profits to themselves and expatriates. What have the PNDC, NDC under JJ, NPP and NDC under Mills and Mahama accumulated for us with the several millions/billions times more borrowed funds we can sell in the future?

My comment:

False claim. Charges were preferred against him and these were repeated in the Odikro's masterpiece posted a number of times in the last few days.
As for those who call him a dictator, I have been pointing out to them that no Political Science worth his onion would do so. And no one with a a PhD should so, as it'd portray that person as uneducated. A first year Pol. Science student in Legon would quickly learn that no African leader in Africa in the 1960s could be a dictator simply because the scope of the state, its capacity, capabilities, reach, etc. were just to small to penetrate to the vast majority of the people and thereby try to control and dictate to them. The least they were was autocratic and pathetically even clumsy at that. Nkrumah, on the other hand, was organised, trying to build a nation from the cluster of ethnic groups some of them which never saw themselves as even Gold Coasters, not to mention Ghanaians, before. The problems of Identity, Cohesion, Loyalty, etc. were paramount to all nearly indep. countries.

As has been pointed out, Nkrumah secured his decisions either through popular appeal/vote (elections and referenda) and parliamentary approval democratically. The attempt to tag him with being a dictator is therefore an uneducated bit of insult which must be treated with contempt and the persons who bandied the insult exposed as not only intellectual frauds but political charlatans as well out to hoodwink the unknowing masses. After all, the main coup makers, one of whom was married to an aunt,i.e., IGP Harlley, only claimed that they took their action in order to avert a "creeping dictatorship". Does it not follow, by their own admission, that they did not overthrow a dictatorship?

Nkrumah didn't declare himself President for life just like that. The whole process went through a democratic process. It was one mistake though he made, as it was quite unnecessary. The Constitution could have been amended to allow him to stand for elections without term limitation, and he'd continue in office just as the guys in Singapore and Malaysia did.

Instituting a one party state was also done democratically; in fact, through a referendum.

Within the paradigm in which it was done, as Prof. MacPherson had shown in his classic broadcast on Canadian Radio which was turned into one of the texts we used in FUE in Pol. Science in Legon, the Third World variant of democracy based on one party states was the closest to the original democracy as practised by the Greeks and in the village squares in Africa. It was not based on instituted adversarial groups or parties as we see in the liberal or plural democracies evolved in the West which have become mere oligarchies controlled by the rich and powerful lobby groups. The one party state therefore have more claim to being the original democracy than the plural democracy. Period!

And then, he went:

My Comment:

C'mmon, where on earth have you ever read that uniting polities is often a peaceful project? No sense of history in such a claim at all! That sense of history is one thing Prof Lungu is bringing to the fore. I don't want to lecture you on this subject so shall be brief. Even uniting present Ghana wasn't a peaceful thing, with Busia and his NLM thugs bent on their federalism and the Togoland Congress bent on their secession bid.

And now this hype:

May this explain why he was overthrown amist cheers and jubilation by majority of the citizenry? I wonder.

My Comment:

My sleepy hometown of Anloga became a hotbed of opposition to the CPP even though they also voted overwhelmingly for the CPP in the preceding elections. In fact, the first insurrection against the CPP started there and spread to the rest of Ghana in 1953. No wonder,Dennis Austin tagged it the "barometer of Ghanaian politics", if I could recollect the exact phrase. Nevertheless, I didn't see the majority of the town people jubilating on the streets when the coup occurred. Of course, the opposition members, the children and relations poured white powder on themselves and went out to jubilate while CPP members stayed indoors. Some who were prominent went into hiding and some managed to cross the border to Togo. Some were arrested and imprisoned. Same was happening all over the country. Nsawam therefore got far more political detainees than those released. Some quickly turned coat in order to save their skins by shamefully denouncing Nkrumah.

Now, we have to know that the CPP was wining just about 70% of the popular vote. Therefore the 30% hard core against people were enough to throng the streets with their relations and thus gave a semblance of a large support for the coup. So was it any wonder that by the following year 1967, when the euphoria had worn, one of the coup makers declared in his book that they were faced with a situation whereby if an elections were held with the CPP participating, it'd have won????? Has Kwadwo and his ilk not read this before? Hmmm! Dishonest academics and people. True of false.

I am not saying we should not critique our leaders, far from it. It is the sheer ignorance of attackers' constitutional or legal, historical, and political science knowledge that is poisoning the atmosphere of educative discourse. Lest I am not misunderstood, I do not say these as insults or as someone who has all the answers. I don't. I am still learning as everyone else.

No amount of twist and turns of conceptual or lexical semantics can dissuade any discernible mind from labeling him as such. All known brutal dictators, world over, run a one party state and Nkrumah succeeded in just doing that by declaring himself the life president in a country of diverse culture like ours. He made no room for alternate views. Nkrumah was a great man, had vision and was privileged to have the resources to achieve what he did but that cannot be an excuse for him to ungraciously declare himself a life president. Nkrumah, the alpha and omega of all wisdom. Who among the so called Big Six was on his side at the time of his overthrown? That alone shows how intolerant and ungrateful he was to Ghanaians who were not ready to kowtow to his dictates. Many people contributed to the struggle for independence but his lobotomized followers believe he was alone in that course. Kwarteng and Prof Lungu can make tall list, up to the high heavens, trumpeting Nkrumah's achievements , which we all acknowledge, in simply won't wash, or change the status quo. My understanding of dictatorship put Nkrumah in the pedestal of dictators if the following clarification matters;

"Dictatorship is a form of government where political authority is monopolized by a single person or political entity, and exercised through various mechanisms to ensure the entity's power remains strong."

The more these bitter Nkrumaist rant, the more their moribund remnants dwindle and is pushed to the threshold of political oblivion or obscurity. We will continue to adore the style of governance of the forever vibrant Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition which we believe in. It is now vivid clear that Ghana is dichotomized politically between the Asante-Akyim dominated NPP and Atinga-Trokosi leaning NDC. The good people of Ghana and, of course, the intransigent 1% diehard Nkrumaist, are free to align themselves with either the "Create-Loot and Share"looting brigade of the NDC or the property owning democrats who has "development in freedom" as their mantra. Over to you, Kwarteng and Prof Lungu. It is all about common sense.

He had a lot to occupy his interests in London at the time, whatever the prevailing circumstances.

You create the erroneous impression that he was a 'hustler' scraping the surface for his daily bread and could not even buy his passage home. This could not be further from the truth.

Please try and re-read the historical accounts (not from Nkrumah) and disabuse your mind from this tired narrative about others somehow 'bailing out Nkrumah'. The fact that his understanding and take on what the Gold Coast needed was so vastly different and apposed to what the UGCC wanted is at the heart of the split, which his colleagues of the Committee of Youth Organizations which he had set up within the UGCC persuaded him to do.

Whilst we want to examine the facts and to be critical of issues, let us avoid misleading comments which if anything, only add to the 'mis-education' that our youth today (who probably know very little of our recent political history) continue to receive from those of us more privileged to provide a more balanced and sensible narrative.

Just trying to 'win an argument' is not enough grounds for us to be blatantly disingeneous.

We know that Nana's father had to hide him(Nana) and a friend in his house during the 66 coup. Nana had to run like Usain Bolt from Legon to his father's house. That is how come Nana ended up in UK (Oxford). He was basically sent to Oxford to escape eventual arrest.

I know this statement Nana made is going to hunt him just like the "All die be die" statement. I wonder who manages his speeches, press releases and his image.

Nana's nephew Otchere Darko is leading him (astray) as he did previously when he released damning info about Nana for the NDC to capitalise on. But the truth must be told that from Potroase to Bunsu Junction,(which is the main areas of Kibi district) nobody knows JB Danquah, but even 5 year olds in the district know the Oasagyefo.

Some of you people should join the intellectual substance of the debate and stop standing on the sidelines and throwing stones at your intellectual superiors.

People like Simon, Adjoa Wangara and Lexus, remind me of the partisan unsportsmanlike spectators of the recent quarter final(?) match between the Black Stars and the host nation in Equitorial Guinea. You just cannot bring yourself to understand how or why others are more intelligent than you are so you insult them and create chaos to vulgarize or attempt to bring to an end a decent discussion on a man who is unquestionably the greatest African ever.

Well let me tell you something, the discussion will not stop. The (intellectual heritage of the) Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah will never die. It is cast in hard iron in the annals of world history. Like socialism, it is only awaiting the inevitable evolution of a more intelligent, civilized and humanistic world before its substance becomes more evident, universally beneficial and clear to mankind.

On the other hand, what has Danquah and his retinue of other historical nonentities got to offer us? Well I mean, other than childishly trying to make themselves look and seem important by trying to steal small-time attention like "oh, Danquah once mentioned the name Ghana before independence so he was the originator of that name" and "oh, Danquah once mentioned the Volta River Dam so he was the originator of that concept". Now these unqualified outbursts of vainglorious pettiness, supposedly in favor of Danquah - to enable him to steal base and unearned credit, are becoming so asinine and spurious that they have rather tended to further belittle and disparage the man, rather than enhance whatever contribution he might have made in our history.

In the futile pursuit to over-rate Danquah and present him as a 'cause celebre' in Ghanaian politics, what you guys - including unfortunately Akuffo-Addo, have ended up doing is to make yourselves look pathetic, dishonest, unprincipled and not worthy of any esteem and respect. Traitors, by all standards and measure, are not given any honorable due in the annals of history and those who try to prop them up, will always get egg in their face.

It is just simply not possible that measly characters like Danquah, Afrifa, RR Amponsah, Harley, Kotoka, Busia and others who were merely used by foreign imperialist interests to subvert the developmental agenda of weak and much-abused former colonial entities, would ever find solace and or prominence in the history of Africa - much more the world. Even those who unjustly manipulate and use them, rightly dump them, turn their backs on them and distance themselves from them as soon as it becomes convenient for them to do so. The history of Africa abounds with and is replete with countless such examples because our colonial oppressors just simply could not and still cannot stop feeding fat on our resources to their exclusive advantage.

Some of you who find it difficult to understand this simple common fact, are doomed to suffer the same consequences that such villains anywhere and everywhere suffer. You will all end up in the rubbish bins of history, never to resurrect to belatedly tell or explain your side of the story.

Why can’t we let sleeping dogs lie? There is an Akan proverb which literally means, ”The child that will not allow its mother to sleep will not have any sleep either!”

“Some, like Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, chastised Nkrumah for his interference. East Africa, Nyerere believed, could best contribute to continental unity by moving first towards regional unity. Although knowing little about East Africa, Nkrumah not only disagreed but actively interfered to obstruct the East African federation proposed by Nyerere.... A few years later, Kambona devised a plan to overthrow Nyerere.

Therefore, Nkrumah's approval of Kambona's plan to overthrow Nyerere - Kambona wrote Nkrumah about it and Nkrumah knew Kambona also wanted to assssinate Nyerere - was one way of trying to get rid of a rival whom he considered to be the biggest threat to his ambition to rule Africa when he was president of Ghana, if African countries were to unite. Although he was no longer in power, and was living in exile in Conakry, Guinea, Nkrumah continued to entertain hopes that he would one day return to Ghana and regain the presidency. If he were to regain power, he felt he would continue to be a great African leader of continental stature he once was or that he perceived himself to be. And it was probably in 1967 - not longer after he had serious disagreements with Nyerere and Kawawa over the Arusha Declaration - when Kambona decided to overthrow Nyerere, about a year after Nkrumah was overthrown. During the OAU summit in Accra in 1965, which Nyerere attended, Nkrumah even had the rooms of the Tanzanian delegation bugged. It was said that officers of the Tanzanian intelligence service found the listening devices. The spying that was done by Ghana's intelligence service on the Tanzanian delegation is also one of the subjects addressed by W. Scott Thompson in his book, Ghana's Foreign Policy 1957 - 1966: Diplomacy, Ideology, and the New State (Princeton University Press, 1969).

First of all, thanks so much for the comment.

Second, that ~1958 statement was made by that Governor, as you say, as he pardoned an African American to life imprisonment, rather than see him executed, for stealing $1.95 from a white widow.

And yes, the PDA was in enacted in 1958, then modified thereafter. So, as cited in Charles J. Ogletree and Austin Sarat's, "When Law Fails: Making Sense of Miscarriages of Justice", the statement was not comparing Alabama justice to the PDA in "Dark Africa". (That is potentially the impression someone may get, at least initially, reading your comment).

Third, we are not sure the problem in the US is as much a case of people in detention without trial, for the predominant number of "arrest-jail-prison" cases.

We will hazard that for about 99% of the cases in the US and Alabama, it is swift trial by judges (and jurors, secret and public, generally by people who are truly not "peers" of the defendant), that is the crux of the problem.

This wayward system, we must add, is abetted by plea bargains that quickly lead to sentencing and prison, prisons that now are increasingly privately owned. Thus, has emerged economic incentives to ramp up "prison production", funded by tax payers, and "profits" going into the pockets of big corporations and private individuals.

Fourth, we will say hazard that at this moment in time, detention without trial is actually worse in Ghana, than in Nkrumah's PDA-times. This has to do "Remanding", where the "arrested" have been in prison longer than the sentence they would have received for the worst offense charged, if they had been brought before a judge even within 13 months of their arrest and "detention".

In Ghana, these "Remand" cases are reported to be in the 1000s, currently.

Fifth, for the sake of reasonable comparisons, we have excluded any consideration/discussion of the Anti-Terrorism laws in the US where people, practically all from other countries, have been held without trial, some for as long as their natural lives. The context, as we've been discussing lately, are unequal, different.

Some dummies frm Danquahland still insisted that J.B.Danquah came up with the name of Ghana, of what Tamsir Niane & Suret-Canale have stated in their writing that, "The King of Kumbi (its capital) was called Ghana, meaning "War Chief,", or Kaya Maghan meaning King of the Gold".... This came from " Histoire de L'Afrique Occidentale, p.23 Translated by Basil Davidson (See The African Past by Basil Davidson).

OUR COMMENT: Ghana's history must be bound by Human History, and there are sources. So, on that score, "Nuff Said".

Also, on the length of the essay, after Secondary School in Ghana, we were trained mostly in the US and were taught to detest long paragraphs. Further, in any well-administered corporate environment where we have some significant experience, that is as well to be avoided.

Also, as you may know, unless you purposely insert additional blank lines between paragraphs, Ghanaweb will render ones essay as concatenated, longer, paragraphs than you, the writer may have intended/wanted, when Ghanaweb publishes your essay. In that sense, the essay may only long to the extent there are a lot more blank lines/spaces. (But on this one, we still leave to the reader to judge).

Iwill rather believe people who witnessed events or were told of them by close associates who were there and saw first hand. Lungu desire to re-write Ghana history to suit the rawlings motives is understandablke but he fell flat on his face here.

Ask youself a) who brought Nkrumah back to Ghana from the US/UK? b) why was he brought back?
Is it not obvious to you that Nkrumah's return toto then GOLD COAST WAS incidental activities on the GOLD COAST/ and that those activities were the demand for Independence? Note also when Legon was founded.Wsa Nkrumah even in the Gold Coast then? Is not therefore possible that JB or someone in his inner circle was instrumental to asking the colonial GOVERNMENT to establish Legon,Mind you The UniversityatKumasias well as the Cape Vars were all subsidiary colleges of Legon.If so does it then make sense that in some ay the founders of Legon were by extension founders of both university colleges.

Was Lungu at the Koforidua meeting when the Nmae of Ghana in refernce to the ancient Ghana Empire was selected for our to-be-new country? NO!!
