Very well said my fellow country man . It's indeed an awkward moment when one's dreams and aspirations for the service of the nation becomes endangered by the very institutions that are established to impart unto it human resource the necessary skills needed for the contempoary job market. The name national service has rather been replaced by 'personal service'. Hmm i can only write.

Your article, Ken Yebua, would be more appropriately titled with any descriptive human character trait than patriotism. People whose job it is to protect Ghana against foreign enemies and farmers in our villages and small towns are more deserving to be called patriots for their continued efforts to produce food to feed a nation of selfish, greedy and unprincipled generation of Ghanaians who migrate to citis and urban centers in search of the elusive government money for the take through graft.
What do you think, Ken Yebua, is a more deserving monthly salary for those fulfilling their national service obligations and what do you think our farmers and fishermen deserve? Many of Ghana's post secondary educated citizens have had the opportunity to study abroad careof government largesse and choose to stay in their new found host nations instead of returning to help boost Ghana's economy. Unless you are of the mind that governments print money willy nilly as needed I am here to tell you that government is supposed to rely on revenues to meet its expense obligations. At the rate at which we wish to extract from government without productivity and needed sacrifices you're not going to get a killer income on National service so you better get used to it until we all come to understand patriotism or love of country.

How many ghost names were generated by those in charge of the national service to defraud the nation of millions of dollars? Thousands!!

In my time, as an engineering graduate I did my national service with a company in Tema which gave me a 3-bedroom partly furnished house. Although, I was paid just a pittance for my service, life was not as difficult and hard as it is now. You could get by because life then was liveable.

Now the country is a mess and while the majority of the citizens are being forced to tighten their belts, those in power of authority are living it up like ARABIAN SHEIKS because they are stealing like there's no tomorrow. Just take a look around you and tell me if the politicians of the day haven't made things very difficult for the majority of the citizenry while they themselves walk, drive, talk and drape themselves in wealth. Show me a genuine politician of today and time past who has not milked and bilked our
nation.

This basically, is what this young man is talking about.

Why should all this opulence be thrown around in the mist of suffering by politicians who are abusing the system when another system that needs a bit of shoring is made to die a slow death while turning young minds who otherwise might turn out to be good or even great future leaders to accept the status quo of corruption and thievery as the norm?

Just read the quotes below and come again if you really think this young man was asking for a hand out.

In my opinion, he was just asking for the system to be made a bit better in these times of economic hardships brought on by the same politicians who have insulated themselves from these hardships by stealing from a system the young man is supposed to serve in.

As for the matter of patriotism, may be he was a bit over enthusiastic and we can allow that to ride.

"Life of opulence, carelessness and squandering is the exemplary life that is being led in the presence of the future leader of this country. The impression being created: yes, there is money in the system, but no one cares about how you live, so just look at the way we find our way around the system and learn to do same and you will survive.
The innocence of many of these young people have deserted them in these few months, some have already been fully initiated into the system and some are still struggling to come to terms with the realities. The system may eventually swallow the rest of us once the remaining drops of patriotism left in us evaporate. I believe those who will be guided by their conscience and are not able to fit in may eventually find their way out of this country".

Is it selfishness on his part? No I don't think so because if the system is made to work better on account of his complaint, everyone who serves in this service benefits... not just him, right, Abeeku?
