He undertook the study of law but failed the course, probably as a result of his many outside activities in student organizations. He helped set up the fifth Pan-African Congress, held in Manchester in 1945, which endorsed a program of revolutionary rather than evolutionary African nationalism.

During his stay in the UK, he was sought out by leftists and Communists and learned much from them about organization and agitation•: He has, however, vigorously denied ever having been a member of •the Communist Party, although he attended meetings in London."

Though I was about two when Nkrumah was overthrown, I heard a lot about how economically things got worse when Ghana foreign reserve was depleted.

Even Nkrumah was alleged to have said if he knew Ghanaians preferred milk in lieu of development, he would have let milk flow in our taps. That indicates to me there was a shortage of at least milk and more since people lined for those goods in later part of his rule.

Nkrumah's regime has more good things to praise him for but the few mistakes he made were monumental and we will all praise him if only his brainwashed apologists can accept that Nkrumah was a human being and as such he made some mistakes which is normal but his admirers want to put him on the same pedestal like God and tell us the man made no mistake.

It was like Nkrumah can provide but not God as recounted here, that was the epic of Nkrumah's personality cult worship.

As a US trained practicing lawyer, I can assure you that neither Nkrumah nor any of his followers possess the kind of mental faculty or communication skills that will enable them to study the Law. The type of rigorous intellectual analyses and devotion to reasoning and logic that one needs to successfully study the Law is eternally lost upon Nkrumah and his followers. BESIDES THEY LACK THE LINGUSTIC ARTICULATION THAT WOULD ENABLE THEM TO TRAIN AS LAWYERS!!

A lot has been written on Nkrumah not only 'cos of what Kofi stated but also 'cos Nkrumah was no doubt the most intellectually productive African leader, dead or alive. He authored many critical books and is still recognised as the foremost authority on neo-colonialism by even leading academics such as Colin Leys. What he wrote was painfully watched unfolded and still unfolding. That's why he is still relevant today and tomorrow. As for Busia and the rest after him, nothing original from them at all! Nearly 20s years in power 14 yrs out of office but JJ is still yet to author his memoirs!

I saw Nkrumah many, many times, as we used to go to the military tattoos to mark various occasions. Of course, we had prime place to sit. As a matter of fact, we have many pictures of Nkrumah in the house, the first taken shaking a senior sister in 1953 before I was born, when Nkrumah visited the O'Reilly Primary School at Kanda. Well, one of our many aunties teaching there, one Mrs Sosu, made sure my sister had the honour of shaking Nkrumah too. Then pics with my dad too when they were training at the Teshie Military School as officers, top civil servants that were conscripted to be trained as such to boost the quality of the leadership of the army {and the Police too). So my dad was both a trained military and police officer. Those were some of the actions that rankled the standing army, with rumours that Nkrumah wanted to replace them with those better educated newly trained officers. When it comes to the army, Papa was old school and would even hear of his first born, Efo Solo, joining the army after his national service at the Paymaster's Office, and Efo Solo was given 24 hrs to vacate the accommodation given to him. That was in the early '70s.

We can also mention mention Dr. Molefi Kete Asante, also ranked among the top "100 Leading Thinkers in America," as another globally influential Nkrumahist.

The list of such globally influential Nkrumahists is exceedingly tall to destribe in detail here...I am happy you mention Colin Leys. These are scholars who know what they talk about!

But isn't it childish to presume that you must be present at an incident before knowing about it? Did you ever meet Julius Caesar?

There were indeed some lawyers in Nkrumah's cabinet, but we are talking about Nkrumaists.....those rabid canines and aggressive proselytizers of Nkrumah's morbid ideas. The fact that these lawyers were in Nkrumah's government does not make them Nkumaists at all. Many that were in Nkrumah's cabinet became his worst enemies.

Besides, they couldn't have been seasoned lawyers if they had to act as executioners of Nkrumah's unethical edicts. That by itself would show how so inept they were as lawyers despite their training. They could not even give Nkrumah good legal counsel!

Finally, if you have to go so far into history to pull two lawyers from antiquity, it simply means you have none today to argue your ideology. No lawyer worth his sort can argue for Nkrumaism. The law and logic do not permit your kind of pedestrian arguments that would only bolster dictatorship.

OUR COMMENT: We could interpret "resentment of Nkrumah's pro-Communist policies within the military" as an expression of US interest at that time. That, the record is abundant and clear.

OUR COMMENT: Obviously, our conclusion will not be far-fetched if we posited the US government was planning with some of the military officer to overthrow a democratically elected government, in Ghana.

What would you call the military types, including Kotoka of the NLC; and Danquah who is reported to have been under the payroll of the CIA during that period, and the NLM?

Nkrumah did his best but he somewhere along the way, he veered and became power drunk. Also his closeness with the communist block became his downfall.

We had to hide milk and sardine in our ceilings when soldiers performed house to house checks after the coup. Kwadwo where were you???

Nkrumah had many issues that caused his downfall and assign the unavailable of canned sardines as the causa of his overthrow is preposterous. I believe the PDA, the one party state, life time presidency, subversive activities and his Communist leaning foreign policies were rather the direct cause of his downfall. The absence of canned sardines and milk had nothing to do with it although Nkrumah deluded himself with this notion after his overthrow.

I started primary school at the age of 5 in 1959 to 1966 when Nkrumah was overthrown.As a kid at class 2 or 3 in 1961,I do rememeber that we were given sovernir cups for Queen Elizabeth's visit in Ghana at school.Shortly after that we did not have to pay school fees and buy books again not even pencils.That was a remarkable change in my life because we did not have to worry about how to get text books again as we usually go to the Methodist Book Depot to buy new and used books for our studies.All this came by the introduction of free elementary education policy by Nkrumah.Sometimes in the evenings,we do watch films offered free by Ghana Information Service in public.Most of the films were about major projects going on in the country and sports.I cannot quiet remember but I think around 1963,we were introduced to watching new TV set at the town hall every evening until some few people were able to buy their own sets.It was funny how children rushed to some rich homes to watch "The Saint"serial movies and Osofo Dadze.I also saw how the Sekondi Naval Base was constructed as a kid in the 60s.I was not inspired by the Ghana Young Pioneers anyway but I enrolled in the Boys Scout.The Young Pioneers Organisation was very attractive,I sometimes went to train in Judo pratice with them only because I knew most of the members. Strangely,I refused to buy their scarf at school even though it was obligatory for school children to wear it at school.I kept the 10 pesewas that my parents gave me to buy the scarf to myself because I did not want to be seen as a Young Pioneer in the 60s.I think it was just because I believe the Boys Scout is much better and less political.I also witnessed the general strikes and curfews(ko dani)as we called it in Sekondi.Ko dani means get inside to your room,that's what the policemen say after every 6 pm.There was lot of labour unrest and talks of Russians involving in Ghana affairs getting to the later part of Nkrumah's regime.Bomb throwing scandals and harrasment of opponents especially on Prof.Busia.It did not come to me as surprised when I heard that Nkrumah has been outed by the military.There has been already military take over in many parts of Africa.The wind of change was already blowing before 1966.At this time,I was in form one and 12 years old.I took it upon myself to become one of the best cartonists in the class,drawing "kanka nyame and Nkrumah".For all that I know it was just a joke.The celebration of Nkrumah's downfall lasted for about 3 months.I completed middle school in August 1969,the same month that Busia was elected as Prime Minister with Progress Party.It did not last too long for Ghanaians to know that we have lost a great leader like Nkrumah when Busia asked all foreigners to leave the shores of Ghana.Growing up as an adolescent,I discovered the great job done by Nkrumah and have ever decided to honour him with great respect.I could not have become a seaman and perhaps live in Europe had it not been the establishment of the Black Star Line.Thank you.

Aoooo, I remember the 10p for the red scarf too. It was ordered through the schools and distributed in class. They were manufactured in China. You wore them and tied them neatly. You were taught how to tie the knot. Some of us made beautiful buttons to hold the scarf in place. Both boys and girls wore them.

I never joined the Young Pioneers either. My parents wouldn't allow me - my mum in particular.

And the free education. That was the best. The best of all when our parents didn't have to buy books for us anymore. All these were free. We got everything free, even bottles of ink and pen holders. Free oo, free free freee...

Kofi Boye, you remember we were also given a simplified version of Kwame Nkrumah's biography in Middle School? It had nice drawings. We were asked to burn all these books after his overthrow.

We must also admit that some families also suffered from Nkrumah's leadership,most especially those who were imprisoned without trial and went through bad treatment.I can understand such families will find it very difficult to forgive him.On the whole,the man did his very best for Ghana and Africa,even far beyond.I passed my exams on the 1/08/1969 and Busia was elected Prime Minister on the 29/08/1969.If you ask me what I remember about Busia today,I'll tell you about the famous Aliens Compliance Order which drove away many Africans from Ghana.I can also tell you how Busia sacked many workers who went on strike for better working conditions.These 2 events brought Busia under pressure.People were demanding if Busia is a real liberal democrat,if indeed he is an honest man especially when he took home more than a year salary advance.How could a democrat who has been calling Nkrumah a dictator cannot stomarch ordinary strike?Danquah and Busia were against Nkrumah's Unitary Government,they were advocating for Federal Government.The question is,why did Busia not introduce the so called Federal Government during his administration?Strangely enough,the NPP today says they believe in the ideals of Danquah and Busia,so why did Kuffour also not introduce the Federal system after 8 years in power?They give us reasons to think that the Danquah/Busia Tradition is basically an empty jargon except for tribal bigotry.There was a movement in this tradition that claims that the rich resources of Ghana come from the Akan regions so they should be seperated from governance (mete meho)Nobody really knows what they mean by this vague statement.You can see,it's not different from what Sarfo Marfo is alleged of today.As for me,we are all Ghanaians and must respect each other and try our possible best to avoid tribalism because it can ignite a brutal civil war for nothing.Thank you.

We tell the story of Kwame Kwakye and invariably always dwell on the humour of his bad English. What we fail to see is that he belonged to a breed of very dynamic yet illiterate leaders who played highly important roles in the development of the country. They were the DC's-District Commissioners. Many of them had little or no classroom education to speak of but they understood what independence and development meant. They were very loyal to Nkrumah, the CPP and the country and spent every last penny allotted to them for the development of their communities. For those of us who do not know, Kwame Kwakye was the DC of Akyem Oda in the Eastern Region. It was due to his dynamism that Oda possesses one of the largest GET secondary schools in the country that could easily be transformed into a tertiary institution. During Kwakye's tenure as DC, banks were opened, streets were paved, clinics were opened and a whole new town was developed at the center of which was a big marketplace which is still a delight to see. Today, we have PhD's as ministers of state who could do with just a modicum of Kwame Kwakye's caliber and patriotism to succeed.
