"Pro-Communist Policies
Nkrumah began in 1960 to display openly his pro Communist, Anti-Western beliefs. Under his influence and with his encouragement, Ghana negotiated a number of economic agreements with Communist nations, waged increasingly strident campaigns against "capitalism, imperialism, and neocolonialism," and generally championed positions and policies in world affairs which support and further Communist aims. Moderates within the government were eliminated or lost their influence, while radicals and leftists assumed positions of importance and leadership and became increasingly influential in guiding Ghana further to the left.
Despite all of this, however, Ghana today is not as far into the Communist camp as would seem probable. That Nkrumah and his like-minded followers have not succeeded in more closely identifying Ghana with the Communist world is due to a number of factors -- the Western culture and tradition ingrained over the years of British rule; the fact that Ghana's economy is still closely tied to Western markets; the fact that the governing party is far from being a monolithic organization and has never fully exercised the powers it theoretically possesses; the opposition of the armed forces to closer military ties with the Communists; and the fact that the Communist nations have been increasing reluctant to shore up the deteriorating economy, thus forcing Nkrumah not to alienate completely possible Sources of Western assistance."

Even when Okoampa begins by making some sense, he is most likely to end badly. His somewhat intelligent take on Nkrumah's subversive and undemocratic posture fell flat on its face when he meaninglessly stated:
"And so, perhaps, the logical question to ask the Nkrumah fanatics is just why they think that it is perfectly legitimate for the Ghanaian leader to freely consort with and seek the active assistance of the operatives of the Russian KGB but, somehow, those wantonly oppressed and systematically persecuted by the self-declared Life-President of the "Republic" of Ghana had absolutely no legitimate right to call on either the United States or Great Britain for countervailing political assistance?"
What is the meaning of this sentence?
The forgoing, together with the meaninglessness of Okoampa's "his" in the subordinate clause of his first sentence, evidences a croon that is too confused to understand what he is talking about. Does "his" refer to Kwame Nkrumah or his "long surviving aid"?

Dr SAS, I have great admiration for you personally and for your illuminating articles with pin point accuracy on Nkrumah's years of dictatorial rule. May I also call for a truce between you and another brother, Kwame, over an issue that's trivial in my opinion and ddividing our ranks. It is undeserving and unnecessary.
My beef is with unapologetic Nkrumaists who keep falsifying and re-writing Ghana's pre and post independence history. My knowledge of Nkrumah's dictatorship is first hand, not the doctored garbage Kwarteng and others who probably never witnessed those dark days in Ghana but are unrelentless in churning out to mislead.
I was a 15 year old, third year student at Mfantsipim School when Nkrumah was overthrown. Three years earlier Nkrumah had fired the headmaster, Rev W.G.M. Brandful for his intransigence over the induction of the Young Pioneer Movement in the scholastic lives of the students. He was replaced by Mr J.W.Abruquah, a chain smoking UK returnee, Headmaster of Keta Secondary School, author of "The Cathechist" and an ardent advocate of Nkrumaism.
I had the singular honor of meeting Dr Busia at Kwabotwe when he returned from exile after the dictator was overthrown and about a year earlier Dr Danquah in his house the day he was released from Nsawam Prison on the orders of Nkrumah, the dictator. Peace, bro.

In your estimation, Nkrumah might well deserved the boot. But you must not assume to know any better of other people elsewhere beyond Ghana to claim 'only Ghanaians only Ghanaians could bear Kwame Nkrumah's nonsensical 15 years of dictatorship'.
Firstly, Nkrumah did not rule dictatorially for 15 years. That is a blatant lie you are perpetrating. Secondly, Nkrumah did not resort to Dictatorial rule until 1964. So, in all, his Dictatorship lasted for barely 2 years. He was overthrown in February, 1966.
The earlier part of Nkrumah's leadership of the Country was under the supervision of the Governor-General, a British Authority. Sir Arden Clarke stayed around a bit after the declaration of our Independence. Even as late as 1963, Elections in which Nkrumah's CPP triumphed over the UP/NLM Opposition were all fair, clean, and properly reflected the People's will.
The Opposition was free to participate in Parliamentary tasks as the Constitution required without fear, until after the Kulungu Bomb carnage. So, do not indulge in hyperboles to artificially deepen the evils you ascribe to Nkrumah, even as you remain silent on the atrocities of the Opposition which had long begun disregarding the democratic norms for changing our Governments.
Just nearby, in the Cote d'Ivoire, a Dictator of no less high-handedness than Nkrumah existed way, way longer than Nkrumah survived. Houphouet Boigny of the Ivory Coast ruled dictatorially till he died naturally.
Mobutu's brutalities in Kinshasa-turned-Zaire, and now, DR Congo, were exponentially worse than what you even now attribute, questionably, to Nkrumah, yet he survived much longer with the support of the West who masterminded Nkrumah's overthrow.
So, tell us something more cogent, worthier than what you offered for comparison.
If you have never heard of Fidel Castro, go Google now to learn about him. His Dictatorship has outlived the Soviet Union, even though his Country, Cuba, is only a few miles from the shores of the USA.
Please, do not indulge in some hallucinatory conjecturing to satiate your morass of misconceptions planted in your mind by the incorrigible fraudulent Scholars. Do your own research and open your mind to evaluate what you find out objectively.
Thirdly, Kotoka did not lead the Coup that overthrew Nkrumah out of patriotism. He did so for his personal reasons that were interwoven into those of Harley's and Gbedemah's and the Opposition's.
You cannot re-write our History without concrete provable facts to justify such modification.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Wow! If you two like-minded Academics, in this day and age, cannot fit in any large space of trading ideas, without reaching for the other's throat, how much better could we have expected the more contentious, life-determining struggles between Nkrumah and Danquah to turn out?
You guys talk about Nkrumah's dictatorship as if it was the only and first that the World had ever seen and tolerated. But you cannot see an eye to eye on what the details you claim to have been Nkrumah's worst behavior as a Dictator are. That is because you have no solid facts to back your claims. You are both manufacturing stuff along the way to further tarnish Nkrumah's reputation, and do not have any already established facts that you could claim for supporting your claims.
Again, when folks like me jump in to point to your hyperbolic description of Nkrumah's dictatorship, it is not that we endorse dictatorship of any form, but because we do not accept your exaggeration conveniently employed to enhance Danquah's image at Nkrumah's expense.
Besides, the contemporaneous context is of great importance to understand why Nkrumah opted to go that way. You deliberately refuse to refer to the evil, murderous attempts to get rid of Nkrumah by your political idols who were embittered by his successful break-out from their untenable political trajectory. The undemocratic, violent tactics began by Danquah and the Opposition, long before Nkrumah's erroneous adoption of dictatorial governance, are as much to blame for Nkrumah's Dictatorship as the Dictatorship itself.
That is the truth. And we have to live with both. No amount of your repeated efforts to re-educate us on the evils of Dictatorship change what really transpired under Nkrumah.
At least, Nkrumah did not order the assassination of any Opposition leader, including Danquah, unlike the long-running quest by Danquah and his cohorts for Nkrumah's life that took the lives of many Ghanaians instead.
It was the bombing and numerous other fatal attempts to murder and overthrow Nkrumah's Government that was Ghana's clear and present danger at that time in our history, and that needed immediate counter-measures to protect the Citizens.
It is not only an Academic fraud but also a grave moral handicap for anyone to claim those violent attacks on Nkrumah and his Government did not contribute to his decision to become dictatorial.
We are not some idiotic, ignoramuses and totally oblivious of what pertained in the politics of those days. Some of us were old enough to know, first-hand, what the Country was experiencing daily in our Political environment of that era. So, your lies and frantic competition between both of you for who could claim the title of the 'Imperial Wizard' of the pro-violence UP/NLM remnants today, should not benumb the conscience and efforts of all patriots who would want to see Ghana pursue modern civilized, non-ethnocentric Politics based on constructive ideas, and not nostalgic or sentimental familial attachments to any dead leader per se.
For all we care, the two of you could destroy each other, so long as that would keep Ghana safer, more united and progressive. Your families, that you would have betrayed with your egoistic, mutually ruinous clash for greater Academic recognition, might find some consolation in enjoying a more progressive, successful Ghana without you.
Long Live Ghana!!!

It's often said that knowledge is power but that's not necessarily true. Knowledge is power only when it's correctly applied to benefit not only the one who is in possession of the knowledge but society in general. After all society is a shareholder in the benefits of knowledge because it provided the infrastructure. What is knowledge if it does not solve problems? It's so disappointing to see two learned guys making fools of themselves while the supposedly less educated look on in utter disbelief. No wonder we have millions of well educated men and women in Ghana but we're not solving any problems and watch helplessly as the problems engulf us like a mountain of garbage.

Your propensity to totally withdraw the very humanity that binds us together from under someone's being just because that person might have offended you shows the depths to which hatred could lead.
That is most disturbing, especially given your Academic prowess, profession, and claim to such refinement that is often associated with our modern enlightened Scholars.
You hate viscerally, leaving barely any room for reconciliation and redemption. My Goodness! Is it so folks would fear to challenge you on ideas, or dispute your claims?
With this horrible attribute, you would have been many times a more dangerous, vicious tyrant than Nkrumah is perceived by you to have been.

It is more of what each patient of dementia produced that is important, in this case than when or whether they shared the sickness.
Nkrumah was not known to have been making unsupported claims in his mental twilight days. All his books and writings and commentaries that mattered were done when he was fully aware of his surroundings and his faculties were not impaired.
I don't know the level of development of K. B. Asante's dementia at the time that he made those claims that you are discussing. So, I would not dare be a judge of whether or not he was fully alert. But we must appreciate the fact that dementia could impair the judgment of the victim.
Nevertheless, we must acknowledge also that the sickness does not suddenly drop on victims in an avalanche to suddenly obliterate their memories. It takes quite some time to develop, even though it may accelerate in deterioration of the brain after a certain point. Given this background, a statement made by a victim at an earlier stage of the onset of the disease could be as sane and cogent as he/she had not been diagnosed with the disease.

When Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966, all our economic indicators pointed to a country on a downward spiral.
When we got Independence in 1957, our economy was betterthan Argentina, Brazil and on par with South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore but all these countries were far ahead of Ghana in 1966.
Our gdp per person was less in 1966 than it was in 1957. In 1957, Ghana did not have any debt and self sufficient in supporting our budgets. In 1966, was in debt to the tune of more than 80 million pounds and we were crying to USA and Britain for budget support. Ghana was politically and economically going down in 1966.

Please take note that those fanatics are getting to know their place because of people like you. As a big fanatic of Nkrumah, you are telling me to mind my business on election day.
I will ask Mrs. Smith on election day to prepare me a bowl of fufu. You are not intelligent enough to notice that the UP/NPP are indirectly calling for a truce! On the day of traitor JB Danquah's anniversary, your hatred for Nkrumah never made you notice that people like Nana Addo were indirectly telling the CPP family to let bygones be bygones because the NPP will once again need the votes of every anti NDC in Ghana.

At least my immediate family can count on me for assistance. They are not renting anybody's house, thanks largely to me or are they starving due to their own hardworking attitude.
Most Akans, sorry to bring tribal in here, Dr SAS. due to our culture share our wealth with our extended families and as such a one well to do family member can cater to cousins, second and third cousins unlike other tribes that see family as father, mother, wife and children only.
Doc, if they want to keep Ndc in power, let them we will see who will continue to suffer.

FIRST OF ALL YOU ARE WRONG ABOUT THE MURDER OF VERY HANDSOME TOM MBOYA, WE KNOW THAT IT WAS CHARLES NJONJO WHO PLOTTED THE MURDER OF TOM MBOYA!I MY SELF WAS INVOLVED IN THE DOWN FALL OF CHARLES NJOJO THE SUPER POWER MAN OF KENYA , WHO ALSO TRIED TO OUST PRESIDENT TOROITICH ARAP MOI,AND THAT WAS WHEN WE HAD THE CHANCE TO DESTROY THE CIA, MI5/6 AGENT CALLED CHARLES NJOJO, IN FACT WHEN THE OLYMPICS WAS BOYCOTTED IN THOSE DAYS AGAINST THE USA , BY AFRICAN COUNTRIES , IT WAS THE MAN KNOWN AS THE DUKE OF KABETESHIRE ( THAT WAS HIS CONSTITUENCY ) IN KENYA WHO MADE SURE THAT KENYA BROKE THE RANK AND PARTICIPATED IN THAT OLYMPICS.CONSEQUENTLY WEAKENING THE EFFECT OF THAT BOYCOT. HE WAS THE SAME MAN WHO DISTRIBUTED MONEY TO THE THEN AFRICAN HEADS OF COWS, TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY DID NOT FORM A QUORUM FOR LATE MUHAMAD GHADAFI TO BECOME THE CHAIRMAN OF THE OAU. AS I ALWAYS KNEW THAT KWAME NKRUMAH HAD A TERRIBLE TASK IN TRYING TO TRANSFORM THE FULLY BRIAN WASHED AFRICANS , WHO ARE TOTALLY SUBMISSIVE TO THE WHIMS AND CAPRICES OF THE IMPERIALISTS, AND COLONIALIST.IT SHOWS THAT MR ASANTE WAS AMONGST THE BRAINWASHED LOTS. IF HE WONDERED WHY KWAME NKRUMAH HAD TO SEND THE CARROTS TO AFRICAN LEADERS AROUND, BUT AS SOME WERE TO HOOKED IN LINE TO THE OPPRESSORS, HE HAD TO DO WHAT EVER HE DID, EVEN MWALIMU NYERERE WHO WAS APPREHENSIVE OF KWAME NKRUMAH'S INTENTION FINALLY AGREED THAT HE WAS ERRONEOUS IN THIS RESPECT. BECAUSE HE TOLD ME IN THE PRESENCE OF ONE OF THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE JEWISH AIR FORCE , MOSHE JEREMISKY WHO IS LATE NOW. THE ONLY THING NEARER TO KWAME NKRUMAH'S DIFFICULTIES WAS WHEN FLIGHT LIEUTENANT JERRY JOHN RAWLINGS HAD TO EXPOSE THE GHANIANS TO NEW TYPE OF THINKING AND THE EXCHANGE OF ROLES TAKEN UP AS DESIGNED BY THE COLONIALIST OF THE BOURGEOIS ELITE OF GHANA AND AFRICA AS A WHOLE.
WELL MR ASANTE WE CAN NOT FINISH THIS MATTER HERE BUT YOU WERE AMONGST THE WETS OF AFRICA THEN , SO I CAN UNDERSTAND WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM!!

Nkrumah was advocating for Africa Unity and perhaps was a very difficult task but he tried his best.As for UP/NPP,I really don't know what they stand for.It was Danquah and Busia who were fighting for federal states in Ghana.I don't understand why Busia and Kuffour could not establish the federal system when they were in power. Is Npp still advocating for federalism or just lost the battle? Can I describe Busia and Kuffour as dishonest politicians or what? Are they afraid to pursue their own philosophy or what?On the contrary,Nkrumah believed in the Unitary Government, nevertheless all his critics have not been able to change it.I want to know if Danquah and Busia were honest?Nkrumah beleived in the Non Aliened Movement but his critics saw no wisedom in it yet Busia and Kuffour were not been able to change Ghana's foreign policy. Why?Are the critics of Nkrumah honest people at all?I would like NPP members to DEFINE explicitly the meaning of Danquah/Busia/Dombo Tradition. Is it about federalism, tribalism or liberalism?I want the DEBATE in philosophy, ideology and moral. Is it dogmatic or pragmatic?Thank you.

As a result of this, Sekou Toure’s,”Nous preferons la liberte dans la pauvrete a l’opulence dans l’esclavage” sounded hollow to other French colonies in Africa. But they wanted “independence”, whatever that would mean, so the leader of #Togo, Sylvanus Olympio found an agreement that was acceptable to all sides in the talks. He proposed to, and the French agreed, to pay a debt to France for all the “benefits” that Togo had received from France during the 46 years of French colonization. France, in that agreement, was to estimate what this “colonial debt” cost, and the African country in question would repay it as a “merci” for France bringing civilisation to them. In Togo’s case, the amount estimated by France was so huge that Olympio knew there was no way they could pay. After independence, he attempted to replace the CFA with Togo’s own currency.
Three days after Togo started printing its new currency, Olympio was killed in a coup led by Gnassingbe Eyadema, who promptly installed Nicolas Grunitzky, a white boy as President. Grunitzky’s first action was to take Togo right back into the CFA zone. The same crap happened in #Mali, where Modibo Keita wanted to take Mali out of the CFA zone and closer to #Russia.
He was promptly kicked out of office in a coup led by Moussa Traore. Keita was lucky though, he slummed around in prison from 1968 until he died in 1977.
In 1966, Jean Bokassa in the #CentralAfricanRepublic conducted a coup against David Dacko. Dacko would become president again in 1979 and be removed in another coup in 1981. What was Dacko’s crime that he was removed twice in coups? He wanted to take the CAR out of the CFA (East) zone. He felt that being in CFA wasn’t helping CAR.
In #BurkinaFaso, Aboubacar Lamizana removed Maurice Yameogo from office for similar reasons, as did Mathieu Kerekou in #Benin who removed Hubert Maga.
As a matter of fact, only Felix Houphouet-Boigny in the Ivory Coast did not attempt at any point to break away from CFA. He was president from 1960 to 1993 in peace. As a matter of fact, Houphouet-Boigny aided coup plotters in #Ghana to remove Kwame Nkrumah, because Nkrumah provided financial support to Guinea’s Sekou Toure (remember him?). Houphouet-Boigny also aided coup plotters in Benin to attempt to remove Kerekou in 1977, when Kerekou decided to adopt socialist policies for Benin. That failed.
Houphouet-Boigny was also suspected of (but never proven to) sponsoring the chaps who removed, and killed, Thomas Sankara in Burkina Faso.

If these CIA/KGB interactions between the UP/NLM and CPP were reactive responses that either side might have taken to counter the other's perceived leadership in introducing such foreign Agencies into our Politics, which side rightly earns the fault of that leadership role?
For all we know, the American CIA, the French, and the British MI5 had long been on Nkrumhah's case, sniffing for an opportunity to destabilize his Regime, long before Nkrumah drifted to the Soviets and had anything to do with the KGB. Nkrumah's response to allow in the KGB was therefore for self-preservation from the unwarranted interference by the CIA. The CIA declassified documents on Nkrumah's overthrow shows a timeline that confirms that assertion. Professor, where and what is your counter-proof?
So, let the truth prevail that the CIA alliance with Danquah's Opposition preceded Nkrumah's reliance on the Soviets' KGB. Nkrumah thought he might be better insulated from the threats he perceived from the CIA covert activities in Ghana which had been detected to flourish with the help of the Opposition. Period.
