Brilliant treatise! One to be bound for current and future reference by the objective - from the novice to the serious scholar and researcher.
Entirely a great read!
A ground-affirming effort in strong defense of what Dr. Kwame Nkrumah represented to Ghana, and his preeminent position in African and world affairs in the 20th and 21st centuries, and certainly beyond.
The ideas are all there - in the series!
And so is the scholarship.
Congratulations, Francis Kwarteng.
Go forth and accomplish higher heights with the best in the fields you chose to "endeavor".
Greetings!

Sarfo,a SLIP&FALL lawyer who calls himself "Dokita"(He was rescued from darkness and ignorance by Nkrumah. Today,he eats with a fork and knife in Austin,Texas - instead of unwashed hands. And he even speaks and writes the Queen's English) should be ignored. No lawyer in America with just JD(LLB)calls himself/herself "Dr." Not even President Obama,a former Law Professor at Chicago, nor any of the Supreme Court Justices. But leave it to this KURASENI who's making too much noise on Ghanaweb, and ignorantly attacking the Great Osagyefo - with the hope of securing a job in Ghana - should Grandpa Addo and NPP win the 2016 elections.
Sarfo,a middle-aged man is just a village lawyer who recently got out of law school. At his age, Nkrumah(who went to PENN,an Ivy League school),had been a PRIME MINISTER of the Gold Coast and was the PRESIDENT of Ghana. The question is : what has this twerp done for Ghana and Africa, since he was taken out of the bush and educated by Nkrumah?(GET school, University of Cape Coast and Legon).
Sarfo cannot match the intellectual capabilities of most Nkrumaists, like Dompere and Kwarteng. He should shut the xxxx up and listen to VERY SMART people who can teach him a lot.
Yours truly pulls no punches.

Dear Brother Yao,
Thanks for your remarks.
People like Truthiness have nothing substantial to add FRUITFUL discussions and choose to dabble in irrelevances instead.
I wonder what Truthiness can tell us about Thatcherism, Leninism, Maoism, Reaganomics (which George W. Bush's father alternatively called "voodoo economics"), Gandhian economics, Stalinism, Trotskysm, Aristotelianism, Buddsim, Christianity, Darwinism, Pythagoreanism, Taosm, on and on and on and on...

No one is doubting the political integrity of Nkrumah but we must all admit that the guy was an administrative failure who could not control his ignorant ministers and advisors. He lost touch with the ordinary Ghanaian and listened only to his inner circle who were all pleasing him blind so that they could steal from the masses. Political imprisonment and unnecessary exhortations poured on him got him disconnected from appreciating the political oppression meted out to the people by his cronies in his name, though he was never part of it nor endorsed it. That is why there was massive jubilations when he was overthrown by ordinary idiots. Ghanaians at the time needed a breathing space to be free, real freedom after literally suffering back to back from the colonial masters and one of their own- Kwame Nkrumah. The comparison with JJ Rawlings is only valid on the grounds that both had vision and both oppressed the masses and ruled on fear. I excuse JJ because, he was barely educated enough to know what he was doing but they were both used by their ministers to enrich themselves. JJ realized the problem about the PV Obengs, Ahwois and Kwasi Botchway only when he was out of power and that is why he still call all of them thieves.
Imagine the wealth of people like Krobo Adusie after seducing Nkrumah with praises to loot the country. That is the point my FRIENDS. That is ANALYTICAL HISTORY and not NARRATIVE HISTORY
Thanks

What is Nkrumahism?
I really found this pedestrian, knowing what I know. Karl Marx also didn't define Marxism, you know?
In fact, when he found out what his followers were doing in Germany which was at variance with what he was expounding, he famously remarked that if that was what they called Marxism, then he Karl Marx wasn't a Marxist!
After his death, his friend and co-author Engels spent most of his remaining life time trying to explain what they meant in their writings, trying to save their works from the many bastardisations like the Stalinist type which emerged much later.
You see, just as other people give names to others, your parents to you for example, so it is with the definitions given to a series of philosophical ideas expoused by thinkers. In some cases, students of such philos0phers synthesized the ideas into coherent wholes.
So be it with Nkrumahism, since it wasn't conceived as a dogmatic ideology. Nkrumah himself in exile revised his ideas a whole lot to fall in line with Marxist-Leninist teachings, some say, thereby rejecting his earlier Nkrumahist ideas. E.g., he changed his position on there being no classes in Africa. And happily for a non-believer like myself, as written by June Milne, he changed his belief on there being a supreme being which created the universe, blah, blah, blah, to the scientific positiion.

Now whether the above article is as a result of the writers initiative or not, he has done a good job by (re)producing something that can stimulate our imagination to think in the right direction.

" The highest educational attainment in terms of a degree is a doctorate. There are two level of doctorates. Research doctorates and professional doctorates which are equivalent to master's level degrees plus an internship. The highest doctorate is the Ph.D. which is immediately followed by other doctorates which require around 20 credits less such as DBA, EdD, etc. In most of the world Physicians and Lawyers receive a Bachellor's level degree as a first degree. Nevertheless, in the United States colloquial use of doctor for physicians was used as an excuse to make it a graduate degree leading to an MD. It should be noted that the MD is not a doctorate in the academic sense. The same is true of the JD, the DDS and other such "professional degrees". A clear indication that this is so is that holders of first professional degrees cannot use them as doctorates in Europe without further studies. MDs and DDS are qualified to practice their professional but are technically not qualified to do research. A clear proof of this is that most Nobel Prizes in Medicine are awarded to PhD holders in the Natural Sciences. In summary a doctorate is a degree that directly follows the master's degree and requires about four years of coursework in addition to the defense of a doctoral dissertation."

The other day, I tried to calm the nerves of contributors who felt uncomfortable about the lengthy articles of Francis. I assured them that it was absolutely essential that articles of this nature ought to be lengthy by default, in order to appropriately fit all related conjoining thoughts into it.
However I am not too comfortable with the kind of verbose that may sometimes retard and distract the average readers focus on an article. This is the problem that socialist ideologues and other unusually intelligent people have in trying to communicate their opinions and ideas across to us mortals. In the process they reduce their listening constituency to a few people of their kind.
The forces against socialism are vulgar and down to earth and that is why they have so far won the hearts and minds of the larger public across the world.
If the 'elect' would be a little more sympathetic and generous with the gift of cognizance, the primitive philosophy of capitalism and its associated ills of imperialism, colonialism and neocolonialism would have died long ago.

No doubt, Nkrumah is the poison ivy of the African leadership conundrum, and even its educational failures. Having been extensively trained in the USA and in the UK, he returned to Africa without any intention to replicate the best in those western civilizations, but rather to exploit the existing leadership culture of tyranny for the purpose of his own perpetual self- aggrandizement. Thus he appropriated for himself the title of the Osagyefo hitherto reserved for chieftains, and conferred upon himself the permanency of traditional rule; he also had a crier sing his appellations and describe his feats in super-human terms at functions. He abolished free speech and hence suppressed criticism of his flaws and instituted for himself some kind of one party state within which dissent became anathema in Ghana’s political context.
Meanwhile, he broached no competition from these traditional rulers, once threatening that he would make them run, leaving their sandals behind. For a person flaunting his scholarship to Africa and the world, he was the alter-ego of several characters in fictional narratives or tragic drama. In the first place, Nkrumah is pretty much like Kurtz, the character in Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” who set out to civilize the natives of Congo only to find himself sucked into the depth of their culture. The only difference is that Kwame Nkrumah was a Black man.......
And he left a bunch of militant followers who know how to criticize even Jesus Christ except Nkrumah himself. These follow a poisonous ideology in whose context Nkrumah does no wrong and never dies, and within which his ardent followers strain at the gnats of Nkrumah's perceived enemies and leave the log on Nkrumah's eye-balls intact.
But, in general, the Nkrumaist position is doomed ab initio: they must defend the misbehavior of an arrant tyrant and a blatant traitor...his imprisonment without trial, his declaration of one party state, his conferment of the power to overrule court judgments, his declaration of life presidency....
Even for an attorney professionally trained to defend both sides of an argument, I pity the awkward and contradictory position of the Nkrumaists. I really don't know of any leader that incarcerated both his foes and allies alike like Nkrumah, or went all out on a suicide mission to fatally doom his own presidency as Nkrumah did. And if any other leader committed one percent of Nkrumah's evil deeds, his followers would be up in arms against that person. Remember how they profusely cite the injustices under Busia and Kufuor's regimes to cast them as non-democrats and to justify Nkrumah's cruelty to Ghanaians?
But their position regarding Nkrumah is understandable because they were indoctrinated to imbibe the propaganda that Nkrumah does no wrong, and that Nkrumah never dies. Fortunately for all of us, these people who are old and decrepit will soon die off with their shibboleth.
But you and I, the younger generation, have a duty to dissect the truth, and let it guide our actions. We must confess that PDA was wrong, that life presidency was wrong, that dismissal of judges was wrong, that betraying friends who helped you was wrong, that indoctrinating children to snitch on their parents was wrong, that putting your effigy on a currency was wrong, that destooling chiefs and appropriating their titles was wrong.....If we don't do this, my greatest fear is that somebody else will find a "good excuse" to abolish our freedoms and hard-earned rights, citing Nkrumah as a glowing example. Remember that Rawlings has done it before; and that is why Kola has aptly stated how so similar JJ is to Nkrumah.....
For them to be taken seriously, the Nkrumaists must confess all Nkrumah's evil deeds here, or else make a fool of themselves by defending them. In the end, that is how they can gain salvation. This is because the typical Ghanaian's crippled intellectual ability, gullibility and vulnerability and lack of creativity all descend from the Nkrumah's heritage which indoctrinated us in early childhood and made us receptacles to fakery and bad doctrines and took away from us the ability to ask questions and analyze incisively. So when the Ghanaian is deceived by the fake pastors and political leaders or shamans and witchdoctors and online scammers, the source of his child-like faith and acceptance of all imposture is traceable to his young pioneer days, when the end all and be all of his life is to subject his intellect to the worship of a conceptual idol, and to praise and serve him for life.
This is the time to free ourselves from the psychological shackles imposed on our minds by the great impostor, and to analyze and criticize and scrutinize these old assumptions which the great deceiver has implanted in our genes, making it impossible for us to decipher the good from the bad, the ugly and the evil.

Nkrumaism is the suspension of one’s analytical reasoning for the cultic worship of Kwame Nkrumah in the belief that he never dies or does no wrong. It is also the wholesale inheritance of Nkrumah’s friends (if any) as heroes and the constant criticism of his real or imaginary enemies.
Within this ideology, the elements of Nkrumah’s dictatorship: his imprisonment without trial, his self -aggrandizement, his one-party state and his life presidency all constitute a theology of faith which must be defended on grounds of opposition treason and extolled by reference to similar evils elsewhere. His disastrous economic policies which left a rich nation on its knees is seen as a great model, and his character as an ingrate is deemed worthy for emulation.
To the Nkrumaists, unanswerable questions are made simpler by postures of diversion and deviation or simple distraction and unspeakable insults. And the most straightforward questions are resolved by the statement that Osagyefo Dr. J.B. Danquah was a CIA agent.

Dear Prof. Lungu,
Thanks for the insightful reminder.
Well, Felix Houghouet-Boigny also sent troops (with mostly French mercenaries that protected his him, his government, and presidential palace) into certain Opposition domains/regions (whose members did not belong to Houghouet-Boigny's ethnic group) and snuffued out their lives.
In other words, Houghouet-Boigny sometimes sent in troops to wipe out members of ethnic groups who opposed him (I will get you the references later). He was able to do this because he had France, America, Isreal, and Britain behind him!
Houghouet-Boigny bought out his "willing" political opponents and paid them more than was legally required; drove political opponents into exile; set them up and imprisoned them for trumped up charges; or killed them. Nkrumah did none of these.
Plus, the $260 million-plus basilica he [Houghouet-Boigny] built and later claimed the money has come from his onw private funds, still remains inadequately accounted for, questionable, and controversial.
At the time he died, he had $10 million in his banks and several expensive villas in France. Though he was a "wealthy" cash commidity farmer, many questions still remain unanswered how he came to be that wealthy!
Also he said: "HERE IN COTE D'IVOIRE THERE IS NO 1, 2, OR 3. I AM NUMBER 1, AND I DON'T SHARE MY DECISIONS."
And oh, Riccardo Orizio's essay "Dear Tyrant" has some interesting info on Houghouet-Boigny, Emperor Bokassa, and France.
Prof. Lungu, there is so much in and about Africa's political history that the citizens of Africa are not aware of or taught in our educational instutions for them to make informed critiques.
In fact, these Western-supported leaders from Lee Kuan Yew, Mobuto Sese Seko, Augusto Pinochet, Houghouet-Boigny, Yoweri Musveni, Gnassingbe Eyadema, PW. Botha (Apartheid South Africa), Ian Smith, Omar Bongo, Blaise Compaore, Paul Biya, etc., make Nkrumah look like an angel and a saint! And indeed, Nkrumah was an angel and a saint!
More of these will be forthcoming!
All errors are mine!
Have a great weekend!

Sometimes I am inclined to think that you are just messing about on this platform and that your real aim is to just want to tickle our sense of humour. Other times I also wonder how old you really are because some of your arguments are so so childish that it beggars belief that your opinions are coming from the mind of an adult.
1. No, Nkrumah does not have copyright to the title Osagyefo. Indeed nobody - including Chiefs, have that right either. Nobody has any title to any name or title. What we do have, as related to the matter at hand, are conventions, customary practice and affectionately imposed popular titular epithets (nicknames) which are widely applied in Ghana, perhaps throughout Africa and more especially among the African American population in North America.
2. As mentioned above, nobody has absolute prerogative of any office or title. The 'Dr' which you unjustifiably append to your name is not your property. In fact, many contributors to this forum who have understandably doubted your scholarship, have also insinuated that you also 'stole' the honor. Many people are conferred with that title by institutions who may simply wish to recognize and honour their effort in a certain area of academia or public accomplishment. In the public domain, people who simply show acumen of extraordinary gift and ability in any sphere of endevour, are slapped with such titles as terms of endearment. I admit that I do not know the circumstances under which Kwame Nkrumah came to be known as the Osagyefo but I can very well conjecture that either a Chief or a group of people from those areas might have added the title of that office to Kwame Nkrumahs name in appreciation of his good works which include effectively trouncing Danquah, an unpopular native son of that area, at the polls and his visionary development accomplishments.
3. Kwame Nkrumah properly, unlike you, earned many doctorates in his life-time for achieving what no other world leader had ever attained in world history to date.
4. Is there any need to go and study how much Ghana was worth when Nkrumah took over as the 1st President of the Republic of Ghana? Of course not! However if you insist I will attempt to give you an idea what Ghana was worth at the time, think about the following; Ghana was worth no more than 5 educational institutions, a couple of health posts, no decent housing schemes for the natives of the Gold Coast, no effective national transport system throughout the country and most importantly, no Democracy after over 500 years of ripping us off in a variety of ways. To prove that the Blackman is capable of managing his own affairs - at least better than what the white man can do for us, Nkrumah in less than 10 years, multiplied in quadruplet quantum leaps, what the white man could not do in over 500 years.
5. A man whose sense of reasoning and logic has been so severely mutilated by the whims and caprices of imperialism, would of course not be able to retain the values of pride, self-respect and dignity. That is why you are not bothered about what people think of you. If in spite of all these drawbacks you still continue to have a huge sense of personal worth and wealth about your worthless self, then one can only come to the unfortunate conclusion that you may be suffering from some acute form of schizophrenia. Then again how many NDC politicians are there? When you have done that you can then tell us how many of them are proteges of Kwame Nkrumah. And did Nkrumah really leave the NDC as a legacy? The NDC is pursuing neo-liberal policies which are actually what you Danquasiris aspire to do. So in this case, who is a natural ally of who?
6. Bro' isnt it unfortunate that today, nobody can put you in prison without trial and throw the keys away into the middle of the ocean?? What a glorious day that would be - especially for some of us on this platform.

Brother SAS, I suggest you leave the Nkrumaist cult to worship their messiah. To them, you foul the air when you aptly argue that Nkrumah was not perfect and that he abused the civil rights of many. Let them hero Nkrumah because they are entitled to do so. Unless you enjoy their abusive language directed at your comments, let them be. I have stopped commenting on Kwarteng and others' failed effort to deify Nkrumah.

Yes, Brother SAS should leave us Nkrumaists alone to worship Nkrumah. It is our right to choose to do so. If the Nkrumah kitchen is too hot for you, please find the door. There is no way a terrorist sympathizer can find common ground with an Nkrumaist. Take note that any African who rises to the exalted level of an Nkrumaist is not one to be toyed with.
It is only because we Nkrumaists are sympathetic to the dangerous level of ignorance that is routinely exhibited by a small and insignificant section of Ghanaians, that makes us try to make these terrorist supporters see some sense. Any civilized person would happily give a hand to a drowning man and that in short is why we bother to respond to the treacherous and dim-witted Danquasiris. After-all, what are the credits of Danquah - if any? Zilch!
I think SAS and his ilk could find more profit by trying to find something useful to write about the squealer and traitor par excellence - Danquah. Ramming their heads against an unbreakable stone wall, will not do them any good - in fact it will cause them further brain damage.
And much as I think that this would be a tall order, I advise these ruffian Danquasiris to cease reading any article written about, by, for or on behalf of the invincible Osagyefo, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, one of the greatest leaders in world history. He is the one man who has achieved the unparalleled distinction of having liberated more human beings from the vile and vulgar wickedness of imperialist oppression, suppression, exploitation and dictatorship than any other leader in world history. Those who cant live with this fact can go and jump into the sea.
In fact I do not understand why they are so obsessed with their fruitless effort to undermine Kwame Nkrumah. Why do they waste so much of their time writing about a man they seem to hate so much that they even tried on several occasions to assassinate him?
Kwarteng will continue to write his highly intelligent articles whether you like it or not and we will continue to read them and discuss them with great enthusiasm, whether you spoilers like it or not.
If I were a Danquasiri, I would quietly go and find somewhere, where I can go and hide my shame and earned disrespect in pieces.
You Danquasiris are however warned that the slightest move you make towards disrespecting the man who gave you the gift of recognition as a human being from your imperialist oppressors, will be met with the full force of the weight of Kwame Nkrumahs name. I dare any of you to come again.
