Multi-party political activities, peaceful election process and outcome are not core democratic values or principles but a well informed voter public. It is about time Africa's minority of adequately educated class upgrade understanding of core democratic values instead of the empty generic attributes we ascribe to democracy. Going to a voting booth to cast a vote for a choice because ones vote is paid for, ill-informed voters and voting out of ignorance, voting out of loyalty to political party over country or voting out of tribal or religious preferences does not democracy make. The just concluded Nigerian presidential election is not an affirmation of democratic values but in spite of it. Ghana's educated and media houses drawing potential parallels between election results in Nigeria and the match up in Ghana's upcoming elections not only affirm our ignorance on values but affirms intellectual dishonesty. The question I have is: why are African nations under-developed with mostly educated leaders even as we avail unto ourselves the title of being democratic nations? Does it ever occur to us there is something wrong with the democracy we practice in Africa if we are always poor and wretched while democratic nations of Europe and the Americas are developed and prosperous even when Africa gives the world most of it's mineral and natural resources? Democracies are sustained and successful by well informed voter public not by the ill-informed, tribal and religious zealotry which scars people in Arab and African nations. We do injustice to our democratic pronouncements and purported education.

OUR COMMENT: We agree, strongly!
If debating "societies" will inculcate in the "youth" and people new to a profession the core democratic values, that there is a major difference between the public domain and private/family domain, then we are all of "debate".
Clearly, we do not want to groom thieves, liars, tribalists, and religious bigots as "good" talking heads on Ghana's airwaves, community forums, and academies.
Further, to the point, "democratic citizenship" is best supported and uplifted though the selection of the best qualified for positions in civil service, assuming civil servants, including police, military, etc., are competitively remunerated, compared to similar positions in private enterprise.
It is the responsibility of our so-called leaders to tie all of these things together, and chart a way that provides a larger role for science, rational/critical thinking, and merit.
As for Ghanaian lawyers and the so-called Bar, the less said about them, the better!
