I have said the exact words in one of my articles about Nkrumah but these Nkrumah apologists want to make him seem like a Messiah like as if without him, Ghana would have ceased to exist.

What you said here is what most Nkrumah opponents have been saying for the longest. I don't believe any Nkrumah opponent will argue that. I have said a thousand times that Nkrumah was too patriotic it made him think that he was the only one who loves Ghana and therefore needed the PDA, President for life and one party state policies to take the country to the next level which were all mistakes that caused his demise.

You guys have to agree those three policies were mistakes and then we can all get along fine.

Kwame Nkrumah, unfortunately, was all of these and more so perhaps that is why some of you find it so difficult to justify your dislike for the man.

If in the English language a messiah means something akin to a saviour or a redeemer, well then the Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is indeed a messiah - metaphorically or in the full sense and meaning of that word. I suspect that fundamentalist followers of the Christian faith and religion, in allegiance with the Holy Scriptures, have assumed an appropriation of the word 'messiah' to be exclusively used to refer to Jesus the Christ. They therefore feel slighted when that word is being used as an epithet to describe an ordinary mortal. This may have attracted the ire of many people of the Christian denomination to take an instant dislike towards Nkrumah and every thing else that he stood for.

Again without Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana would have become just another dumb African country like Nigeria, Togo, the Ivory Coast, Liberia, Morocco and the rest. Ghana may not have ceased to exist but Im sure you know what I mean.

You are right that Nkrumah may have thought that he was the only one who loved Ghana the most and therefore he needed the PDA. The thing is what did he need the PDA for? Let me ask you a personal question. What measures would you employ against terrorism if you were the head of state of Ghana today?

Considering the consistently uncompromising and disruptive misdemeanours of the opposition during the time of the Osagyefo as President of Ghana, does it surprise you that he would propose a one-party state?

Now fast-track to today. Considering the glamorous circus-like multi-billion dollar fanfare that is shamelessly undertaken by political parties in the name of election campaigns in an underdeveloped society, would you in all sincerity, not opt for the zero-expense option of a national party where proper internal democracy can be activated to determine who our leaders should be?

Considering the obnoxious , divisive and fractious fall-out of multiple competing parties for an election. do you not think a single national party would bring to an abrupt end all the nonsense that multi-partyism entails?

Considering the fact that members and sympathizers of all other opposing parties to the winner of an election are summarily dismissed, isolated, criminalized and/or are made to step aside from high public office whilst those in the private sector will have their businesses abruptly abrogated or undermined, makes the case for a unitary national party more enticing and a more sensible option.

Considering that the largely illiterate mass of people do not vote on principle but on such spurious sentiments such as ethnic, religious and monetary compensation, do you not think that a national party would make more sense by sanitizing the political terrain?

Do you not think that as it happens in countries like the US and UK where two or three parties with the same political philosophy have monopolized the political scene for decades and in some cases centuries, the whole thing assumes the nature of a dictatorial duopoly?

I am sure that the great Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP considered all these and more before proposing the idea of a one-party state which to all intents and purposes is a more practical option for the under-developed nations of Africa.

Since the dawn of African independence from colonialism in the early 1960s, African liberation leaders and founding fathers qua dictators, military junta and "new breed" leaders have sought to justify the one-man, one-party state -- and avoid genuine multiparty democracy -- by fabricating a blend of self-serving arguments which converge on the notion that in Africa there is a democracy before democracy. The core argument can be restated in different ways: Before Africa can have political democracy, it must have economic democracy. Africans are more concerned about meeting their economic needs than having abstract political rights. Economic development necessarily requires sacrifices in political rights. African democracy is a different species of democracy which has roots in African culture and history. African societies are plagued by ethnic, tribal and religious conflicts which can be solved not by Western-style liberal democracy but within the framework of the traditional African institutions of consensus-building, elder mediation and conciliation. Western-style democracy is unworkable, alien and inappropriate to Africans because the necessary preconditions for such a system are not present. Widespread poverty, low per capita incomes, a tiny middle class and the absence of a democratic civic culture render such a system incongruous with African realities. Liberal democracy could come to Africa only after significant economic development has been achieved. Any premature introduction or misguided imposition of it by the West could actually harm Africans by destroying their budding faith in democracy itself.

You are asking about harm to the body of a Head of State that may compel the government to institute measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the US, we found out in our own life time that Pre-Emption is the equivalent of the PDA, whether in Ghana, India, etc.

That said, we are not sure why a state should wait until harm to the Head of Government is attempted before the state acts to secure the State. That does not sound like good governance to us.

For one, the US did not wait until Bush was harmed, or until an attempt on Bush failed, before enacting the Patriot Act.

To your specific question, we are far from the experts in this area of Ghanaian life/history. However, we can provide these 7 examples that predate 1959 about insecurity in the Gold Coast and Ghana that could have necessitated the PDA, from reading and saving records on Ghana web, and other media, Ghanaweb in particular. In fact, if we take the work of columnist Francis Kwarteng and others serious enough, there are a lot we all could learn about that sordid history:

1. Dr. Ama Biney: “The political violence in the country continued with a dynamite explosion at the Central Market in Kumasi on November 17, 1955, and the murder of Krobo Edusei’s sister the following month.”

2) Dr. K. A. Busia and the NLM warned the British government in August of 1955 of grisly after-effects, if the country attained independence under the CPP government.

3) On November 10, 1955, Nkrumah’s house was bombed while he was resting and working in his house with his secretary and others because of a terrible cold.

4) On the eve of Ghana’s Independence on March 6, 1957, the Ewe Unificationists, led by S.G. Antor (Danquah’s buddy), formed themselves into a ragged guerrilla army in Alavanyo and prepared for armed insurrection with homemade guns against the CPP government. The Governor-General sent troops to the region to put down the revolt.

5. In 1957, Busia was making clandestine calls from the US Embassy in Accra asking for funds and requesting the origins of those funds be hidden to show he raised those finds from "party activities. In one instance Busia was asking for $25K, (no $10K). We imagine throughout this period Ghaiana security were monitoring those subversive activities.

6) In 1958, there was a plot to assassinate Nkrumah at the airport and then overthrow the CPP government as Nkrumah was about to leave for a state visit to India. The plot was discovered and the plotters were arrested.

7) In 1958, Modesto Apaloo and R.R. Amponsah (General Secretary of the N.L.M, and later the opposition parties, UP) were implicated in plotting the first coup in the new Ghana with Captain Awhiatey, Commandant of the Gifted Camp (now Burma Camp). The Granville Sharp Commission reports the following: “Amponsah and Apaloo since June 1958, were engaged in a conspiracy to carry out at some future date in Ghana an act for unlawful purpose, revolutionary in character.”

IN SUMMARY: A nation need not wait to see harm done or attempted on the Head of State before they take proactive/pre-emptive actions. There were direct threats to Nkrumah's life, and general threats to Ghanaians citizens and to the security of the state predating 1958.

Remember, Nkrumah was Leader of Government Business from 1951-1957, and the Danquah-Busia confederates never yielded. Hence the PDA...in 1958!

Otherwise you will not be assigning as reasons some things that happened in 1955 to justify a law that was enacted in 1958, three whole years after the event, to incarcerate people without trial. If the so-called dynamite explosion and the murder of Krobo Edusei's sister occurred in 1955, why wait until 1957 to enact a draconian law to countermand it? Where is the emergency that would justify such a far-reaching law? In any case, why not arrest the perpetrators and deal with them under existing law? What has the perpetration of any political crime got to do with mass imprisonment of citizens without trial?

And what has a warning of the grisly effect of independence got to do with the PDA? Busia gave a warning of the grisly effects of independence in 1955, so after independence in 1957, there should be a PDA in 1958? Was that not in and of itself a fulfillment of Busia's warning of the grisly effects of independence that one could be incarcerated without trial? And if Nkrumah's house was bombed in 1955, PDA should be enacted as a result of it in 1958?

The two events in 1958 (6 and 7) could offer some justification for emergency rule if they rose to the level of a national crisis; but even if true, attempted assassinations and coups happen all the time, and are not presumed to be cause for any emergency rule anywhere. All out civil war and national disasters might justify emergency rule with something akin to the PDA, although for the duration of such events. Otherwise whoever is involved in any crime is tried by existing law and punished accordingly.

Political crimes happen all the time, but they do not constitute any reason to impose marshal law on any country. You accuse a person of any crime, give him a shot at a trial. That ought to be the rule under any civilization. If you think you could make yourself a judge and jury and prosecutor in your own cause, you are a dictator and you must be prepared to be deposed in disgrace.

So if it is all right with you to justify Nkrumah's emergency rule under the PDA wherein thousands were incarcerated without trial, it should not be a difficult intellectual leap for you to understand his ignominious overthrow.

And if you think "A nation need not wait to see harm done or attempted on the Head of State before they take proactive/pre-emptive actions" that means by your reasoning, laws like the PDA do not necessarily need any justification for their enactment. That was indeed Nkrumah's view then. And yet he spoke of freedom and justice and independence for Ghana. What was the meaning of all those phrases in the context of the PDA, one party state and life presidency?

Your type of mentality is an existential threat to our democratic dispensation, and it is the work of men of reason to ensure that it does not become a ruling philosophy in our dear country. In this sense, CPP is forever doomed to the fringes of our country's leadership.

And you may continue to invoke imaginary catastrophic events leading up to the imposition of the PDA. But the facts of history do not support Nkrumah's PDA in the context of his declaration of freedom, justice and independence. And that is why Nkrumah was ignominiously overthrown. He was an arrant dictator who concocted reasons for his tyranny, so he had to go in disgrace. It is all right if you think he was benevolent to the "subversives, traitors, and secessionists who were bent on tearing apart the new nation" by imposing dictatorship upon a country to which he had made a promise of freedom and justice. We also find it all right to recount his tyranny and to celebrate his overthrow as fair and just. You may also continue to spawn his PDA legacy today; but Ghanaians know better now and will resist the oppressor's rule with all our hearts and minds forever more.

And as regards my side winning elections, it will not be at the sacrifice of the truth about Nkrumah. Indeed, I would rather NPP lost than that we concealed the truth about Nkrumah's arrant dictatorship. A truly Ghana-centered approach will begin to uncover where we went wrong, so that we can discover where we can get it right. Such an approach will never engage in revisionism, rationalizations and dissembling of the historical record. And if it is the purpose of you Nkrumaists to blackmail us into accepting Nkrumah's infallibility and immortatality before voting for our national salvation, you may keep your votes for the NDC every time.

This Lungu guy obviously does not know the recent history of Ghana. Acheampong was full-blooded Asante but when he went wrong against the people of Ghana, his greatest opposition came from the Ashanti Region. While the Gas did not want Kufuor to build his library in Accra and have removed Ohene-Djan's name from Accra Sports Stadium, the Asantehene recognises every tribal chief in Kumasi.

Clearly, if we had adopted a federal system after independence, some regions would have moved forward by now and drawn up the inward looking backward thinking ones with them!

Call them haters if you want. All they could do is to follow their stomach and help the NDC to perpetuate their corrupt ridden governance. Such is of nature of these apostles of doom, namely, Odikro Akyea Mensah, Francis Kwarteng, Andy-K, Kojo T and most treacherous of all is Prof Lungu. Some of us are smart enough to know the inherent mischief in prof Lungu's stance on events here on Ghanaweb. He claim he is not a CPPian, therefore, and by extension, he could be considered a non Nkrumaist. His take on issues bordering on Nkrumah contradicts his outfit and exposes him as a dishonest person, especially as he seems to uphold and defend everything Nkrumah, both evil and benign.

I say prof Lungu needs serious mental evaluation if he cannot see the import of the "all die be die" rhetoric which some propagandic dunces and scumbags have been mischievously tried to score cheap political points since it's advent. Who in his right senses do not know Nana was referring to that stupid act of bullying and intimidation which preceded the by elections at Atiwa and Akwatia where at one instance Anita DeSoso had her pickup truck run through a crowd of NPP supporters, injuring scores of those poor souls. What about the Azoka boys who were transported all the way from Tamale to beat up, intimidate and prevent NPP supporters from coming out to vote. So, is it a crime for a leader to tell his followers to stand up to the task, defend their votes and squarely face their idiotic opponents with the same aggression ( that is to say, all die be die) with which they( the Ndc foot soldiers) approach election? What is worse than Prof Mills telling Ghanaians that would be like Kenya if ...............? If telling your supporters not to snatch ballot boxes, as Yaw Boateng Gyan was caught on tape telling NDC foot soldiers to do, but encourage them to protect their votes at the pulling stations can be misinterpreted or misconstrued as 'power at all cost' by some of you guys, then I would suggest you need medical intervention for something must be wrong with your thinking faculties.

A recent example was the hulabaloo about the criminally recorded "Osafo Marfo comment" on Ghana's resources. Even if he said what he was reported to have said, so what? That was an obvious truth. The NPP could not defend him and you even had idiots like Arthur Kennedy and Nyaho Tamakloe castigating him.

That said, the little we know about Houston, Texas, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Texas big cities in general, attorneys, lawyers have freedom to "ambulance-chase" and "slip-and-fall", even from the same event/mishap/incident/accident. Some of that may explain "doing real good financially."

I do agree with you though on your last paragraph. People don't ship 80s cars but rather salvaged cars, cars that have been involved in accidents and deemed not road worthy, bought, repaired and shipped home that cause many accidents in Ghana. We all need to discourage that.

Whilst Ghanaians were lining up for essential commodities like milk and soap, shops in Ivory Coast was bursting on the seams with these goods.

I don't have to list factories in Ivory Coast. Just google Ivory Coast economy in 1966. I hope you know how to do basic research.

In 1966, some of the Nkrumah built factories and industries were failing because most of them were losing money and the state supported factories could not be supported.

Typical example was the workers Brigade farming enterprise. It was failing because we have hundred people in almost all workers brigade farms that should have only ten workers, typical socialist policy that also came out when USSR and East Germany came unglued.

No need to engage you in any insult match, just google Ivory Coast in 1966 and compare their economy, education and everything and then make your own informed decisions.

If you say you know how to do basic research as stated above, please go back to the subject of the Ivory Coast and research on the development status of the Ivory Coast at any time of her history, to figure out if that country has ever been as close to Ghana in her development as you falsely claim?

First of all, and to put it bluntly, Ivory Coast is simply put, still a mere overseas (economic) plantation for the French economy. Up to today, most economic installations in that country - from production to agriculture, belong to French and other investors.

La Francophonie is a term used to describe the French empire and in that empire, the French have absolute authority over any financial or economic activity that goes on in any of the countries of that dominion.

As I stated a couple of days ago, the anti-Nkrumah bashers are informed only by their own deep-seated ignorance, lack of knowledge, malice and spite.

Up to the time when Ouattara usurped the sovereignty of La Cote d'Ivoire, the real Ivoiriens were second class citizens to the French immigrants. With the exception of an infinitesimal politically induced middle-class, most Ivoiriens who do not have the privilege of higher education because they simply cannot afford it, were and are now relegated mainly to activities like trading and other menial jobs.

Now, the real Ivoiriens are merely the third class citizens after the Bourkinabe immigrants (the people of Bourkina Faso) who have not only been led by France to take over the Presidency and govt but the second-class slot of the economy where once the Ivoiriens were relegated to.

So now with a foreigner now running the show, Ivory Coast has now virtually become a regional dept of Bourkina Faso. However they are all firmly under the thumb of France who by the neocolonial standards of La Francophonie, gets first choice decision on any major investment opportunities and that is why virtually anything of economic significance or importance in the Ivory Coast belongs to France. The Ivory Coast has never really been an independent country in the real sense of the word.

Generally, in spite of the fact that the imperialist errand-boys have reduced our country Ghana to her knees to become a neocolonial entity, the people of the Ivory Coast still look up to Ghana as if it is the utopia of Africa.

Sarpong, I do not know whether you live in Ghana or not, but if you do and you are not blind, just go around to all the major educational institutions in Ghana and you will be amazed at the number of Ivorian students studying in Ghana. They still dont even have the institutions in their country and if or when in isolated instances they do, they are too expensive for the average Ivorian to attend. And you ungrateful SOB you compare this to Ghana? And this is only just in the area of education. Come on wake up!

You Nkrumah-bashers don't change do you? In the same way that your precedents took a plane to go all the way to London to plead with her imperial majesty the Queen of England - the longest ever serving and unelected head of state in the world, not to grant independence to Ghana, your attitude about belittling your own country has not changed. What at all is it that you guys want?

Yamoussoukro was designated as the administrative capital of the Ivory Coast simply because it happened to be the birthplace of their first President and loyal French servant, Felix Houphouet Boigny.

Yamoussoukro is one of those certificates of evidence of idiotic governance in Africa by imperialist puppets. Yamoussoukro is host to the largest church in the world, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro. It cost the imperialist dog Houphouet Boigny, the French slave, $300 million to build this basilica which is now in total ruins due to the inability of the state and the Catholic Church to foot the huge financial costs of maintenance. This huge edifice used to stand tall and regal in sharp contrast to the vulgar poverty of the living conditions of the local Ivorian people living within its vicinity.

The other city that you mention is also spelt Bouaké and not Boauke. Bouaké can at best compared to Koforidua and nothing more than that.

The very fact that you cannot even spell the names of these places tells me that you dont know the most basic things about the subject matter at hand. Dont be too known, it can backfire on you.

As for Abidjan, it used to be referred to as Le petit Paris (small Paris) because of its extravagant and elegant structures as well as cosmopolitan characteristics. And mind you, the average Ivorian was not factored in the fairy tale impression of Abidjan. Witha few exceptions they were at best the servants, drivers and watchmen who serviced the largely expatriate class. It was like the period when Ghana was still under colonialism and Ghanaians used to go to work at the European quarters as menial workers.

For your information, Abidjan is now a pale shadow of its former self. Since the French were thoroughly shaken by Gbagbo's nationalist approach to get their country back from the French, many of them have run away to other safer and more vulnerable locations in Africa. The economy however still firmly remains in the hands of the French.

If you live in a country where most of the major economic installations belong to foreigners, does it not mean that you have lost grip or ownership of your country?

Of course Ghana is now a neo-colonial nation. There is no doubt about that but isn't that what some of you prefer? I only referred to the French colonies in my earlier submission because that was what the subject was about. But the truth is that at the time when Ghana had become solidly independent under Kwame Nkrumah, the French colonies had still not yet gained even the aesthetic superficial independence that the colonialists had begun to allow its former colonies to get excited about.

Damn it! Why did the likes of you take the trouble to overthrow the nationalist Kwame Nkrumah govt? Wasn't it because you didn't think that the newly independent nationalist, bold and determined govt of Nkrumah should not be allowed to assume an independent path towards development but should obey the prejudiced whims of what you people refer to as the international community? A simple listening of America's military experts, war historians and articles by investigative reporters do confirm one thing, if even faint; they refute your simple-minded and callous approach to facts and conclusions. Most nations "freed" from under tyrannical leaders have become failed states thanks to your whitewashed ideas and ideals on democracy without hard work , shedding of blood, sweat, tears and understanding.
In the USA where you and others like you live relative comfortable lives, the Republic did not become a reality overnight without wars between the new settlers and the natives, between the settlers and former colonial masters and finally between the northern states and southern renegade states. To this day there are backward southern states who would like nothing more than use discriminatory laws to continue slavery for commerce; some of us will take an Nkrumah era dictatorship over slavery but know you are the house negros kind and would not understand. Why do you think northern states elected officers deemed it necessary to go to war with the south when democratic values of freedom of individuals in the south to choose for themselves were being trampled by forces from the north? The last we checked, “dependent states,”...Mississippi and New Mexico, each...gets back about $3 in federal spending for every dollar they send to the federal treasury in taxes. Alabama and Louisiana are close behind. Then there are Kansas and Louisiana, Mississippi, etc.

Democracy, just like socialism, is relative. In many cases, it is in the eye of the beholder, more so, in the eye of the people who with power, access, money already!
