For starters Ghana is not a democratic nation; it is neither a young democracy or a mature nation with any ideological leaning. Democratic governance is not about presumed freedom to vote at a ballot box but the existence of effective government institutions with oversight responsibilities over civil society, transparency and the respect for those you particularly disagree with on policy while administering a system of justice that is fair to all.
Ghana did not have uninterruptible supply of electricity, pipe borne water or other utilities until the day President Mahama came on the scene; we have has thsee problems before the 1966 coup. In the 40+ years after the 1966 voup, we have seen presidents come and go, we've heard them promise to resolve the many problems, seen the abuse and misuse of citizens and government revenues and seen a collection of rich Ghanaians who did not faithfully and honestly earn their riches. Through it all no one, not the rich or governments gave a darn about Ghana's poor. Explain to me in a language I can comprehend the moral courage in organizing the dumsor vigil if the lead organizer, Yvonne Nelson did not feel the pain or need to advocate on behalf of Ghana's poor over the years until she started feeling the effects of trying to make do without electricity and or the cost to keep the lights on before becoming a heroine to a bunch of dumb men. Did the J.J. Rawlings and J. A. Kufour respective era not create a small groups of relative extra rich folks in Ghana who can hardly explain where they got their riches even as governments struggled to meet payroll or meet its outstanding foreign debt obligations?
We've become satisfied fools in Ghana just as long as incoming governments promise us a world of free things and irresponsible existence.
