To me JJ served a purpose.He has stopped to coups.Seriously we made mistakes .Now the debate should be on application of Nkrumaism or its modification to modern day development JB,Busia,JJ,K4 are irrelevant as they propose no solutions to our problems .So far 2015 4600 people have perished in the Mediterranean sea getting to Europe.Africa has a lot of natural resources, we should concentrate the debate on how best to use these for the benefit of our youth The past is a guide as it shows what worked and what did not .My salutations and Aluta continua

"...The Ghana Armed Forces as I used to know it is an institution with a very high level of integrity and quite frankly much as we are happy with the fact that military interventions are becoming events of the past we also must wake up to the fact that the proper way of preventing those interventions is through proper governance, maintaining integrity in government and remaining accountable to the people..." QUESTION: Might that be the proper frame of reference for Jerry Rawlings to bring to the table, for the future?

Seems to us nation wreckers have no responsibility to propose solutions.

And when they have Indemnity Clauses on their behind, don't it behoove them to be circumspect in their utterances and actions, when we know a lot of people are in their corner, many for the wrong reason(s)?

The fact that President Nkurunziza refuses to honor the Burundian constitution,does not mean the Military should step in.The core of his argument is that he is elegible to stand again this month for his "second term",because the Burundian constitution (2005)which(in non legalese)says the president should stand for two five-year terms by 'universal sufferage', does not apply to his earlier election by the National Asembly - after the civil war and before the constitution was drawn up.

In a sense,Nkurunzizi is saying that his first election in post - transition which was not by universal suffrage,should not count towards the mandated two terms restriction.He was supported by the Constitutional Court of Burundi in its ruling. However,the Chairman of the African Union that brokered the deal to end the civil war(300,000 Burundians deaths)in Arusha - the Arusha Peace Accord,2005 - disagrees with the Constitutional Court's decision.

In view of these different interpretations of the constitution by both sides,was it necessary for the Military to intervene? The answer is a qualified NO!

First,as former Harvard Professor Samuel Huntington has shown,the Praetorian Guard in newly independent and developing countries,fare worse than the civilians they overthrow.(We in Ghana don't have to look beyond our borders).

Second,Burundi not too long ago ended a civil war(inter-tribal) with 300,000 deaths and 40,000 fleeing the country.Its nascent democracy,with POWER SHARING between the majority Hutus(80%) and minority Tutsis(15%),is still fragile and tenuous. Any civil war precipated by a successful coup led by Tutsis,will undoubtedly bring about a possible genocide and major refugee problems.

Third,already there's a lot of pressure on President Nkurunziza coming from aid donors in the West,the UN and the African Union,to vacate the presidential palace,as his term end this month.

Overall,sqeezing recalcitrant leaders diplomatically and economically(SOFT POWER )to quit is far better and the "lesser of two evils",than to support coups which later lead to repression,looting of state treasury,and counter coups.

GHANA HAS BEEN THERE,DONE THAT !
