  Some drivers not being able to read does not mean they don't have the wisdom to judge or know what is right from what is wrong. Yes, it is appropriate to ask drivers to be able to read and write, but do you get rid of all the drivers who at the moment cannot read but have done this work all their lives? Some of them have been driving for many years without a single accident. DVLA director should have the statistics of literate and illiterate drivers who have had accident and he would realize that most of the accidents are caused by literate drivers who are most of the time in hurry to beat time for appointments. The same illiterate drivers have been doing this job for a long time, besides, they are the bread winners for their families, so preventing them from working is going to cause more problems for them and their families. I suggest the way of attrition, gradually diminishing the illiterate drivers. How many complicated sign boards do we have that an illiterate driver would not understand. Please use your wisdom and not knowledge in this matter. These drivers after all might not be stark illiterates, so treat them with dignity and respect.
