Then again, don't be too bashful to concede that there is no God or gods...at least not in the crude way we understand the term and use or abuse it.

Finally, if you are indeed young, then we have hope that rationality will never be lost upon our people. For we are known to worship rivers, stones, fire, trees and snakes and cows and insects. And thereafter, worship our fellow human beings. And gullible citizens are prone to go wayward if they are not periodically prompted by the enlightened ones like yourself.

If you have truly freed yourself from religion, the power to be great is now in your hands.

God bless you Mr Nketia. It is quite unfortunate that we fail or refuse to use our brains to develop as individuals and communities. God had a purpose when He created us with brains. In fact, when God said Adam was to work the Garden and take care of it (Gen 2:25), he was saying humans beings are to use their minds to create things to enhance their lives. By this we are to become co-creators with God.

You see, "Success is not a destination but a journey; the greatest assert for the journey is the mind; how to use it is the secret."

One wonders if Ghanaians use the mind as it should be used. Why do we for years continue to rely on the Akosombo Dam for electricity? What was the country's population when the Dam with its capacity was constructed? What is our population today? So, we could not use our minds to think that population is increasing and community is extending so something should be about our source of electricity.

Do we have a "master plan" as a nation - a plan that belongs to Ghana not a political party that every successive government will follow for the development of our people? Was former South African President P. W. Botha right when he said, " The Blackman is a symbol of ... mental inferiority, laziness and emotional incompetence. ... The blackman lacks foresight ... The average Black does not plan his life beyond a year"?

Our attitudes and lifestyles clearly show that many of us don't use our minds. I am sorry to say that most of us think emotionally and so work with feelings and impressions instead of thinking logically and work with facts and truth.

Many of the present day so-called "men and women of God" are not thinkers and so are not helping our people. For instance, why spend hours each day of the week at church during the day to pray, when you are to go to work or find work to do? God didn't say we should pray to eat, but we are to work to eat. The apostle Paul gave a rule to the Christians in the Thessalonian church, "If a man will not work, he shall not eat" (2 Thess 3:10).

Let me add that true and mature Christians should begin to think to participate in politics for it is only good governance led by thinkers that can help us as a nation. As Plato said, "One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."

They should be CREATING left and right: new philosophies, new technologies, new works of literary art, novel Church music, new system of governance, new teaching methods, etc.

Also, I think the situation is more than just religion. After all, didn't Gregor Mendel, a Christian monk, devote his entire life to the establishment of the field of genetics? Apostle Dr Safo Kwadwo Katanka, who even runs a church, has not allowed religion to stop him from being productive in the field of electronics and automotive engineering. Isaac Newton was deeply religious, and I personally happen to know many accomplished Jewish scientists who also happen to be devout orthodox Jews.

They are busy saying their so-called 'tongues' and giving out offerings / donations to these so-called men of God, and they will not have time to read or join this forum. We must find other ways for this conversation to reach those who are being deceived by these so-called men of God, otherwise Ghana and Africa will continue to be fooled by these so called men of God. People are not allowed to think and reason the cause and effects of life issues because these so called men of God have answers for everything from healthcare to marriage to social issues to almost everything. We need "intellectual revolution" to educate Ghanaians and Africans and open their eyes to the wealth of information out there that will help people think for themselves. Great effort, well done!

Years ago,as multiple lanes were being constructed from Achimota area to central Accra,some chiefs stopped the widening of the roads - because a tree that needed to be uprooted was the "abode of three spirits or gods".They demanded cash,cows, sheep,and cases of Schnapps to "appease" the "spirits".The government finally offered them money before construction could continue.

Fetishism in our culture has polluted,manacled and crippled the minds of Africans for centuries - and even the educated ones have become victims.Witness J.B. Danquah's indirect participation in the beheading(ritual murder) of Nana Akyea Mensah,Chief of Apedwa upon the death of Ofori Atta 1 in 1944. Yes,Danquah had a doctorate from Oxford at that time,but for him and many educated Africans,antiquated and primitive cultural traditions are more important than any foreign laws implanted in the Gold Coast/Ghana.And this sentiment is also rigidly enforced by our chiefs and elders today.That's another facet of the causes of African backwardness and poverty in the 20th and early 21st centuries.

It is true God gave us all - Africans,Europeans and Asians - brains to explore the world and the universe. The latter two have taken up the challenge.They don't accept "What is" - as Africans seem to accept.Rather,they ask,"What's over there?","How were things made?",and take chances to find out.They are not encumbered by religion too.That's the difference between Africans and other races.

Perhaps, he is not aware that ignraonce and superstition are two of the debilating cogs in the vicious cycle of underdevt and backwardness. Or does he not know that Ghanaians, for that matter Africans, are classified among the backward peoples of the world, now politically correctly referrred to as developing people? (Oh! That deceptive comparisons with Koreans, Malays - Asians - who had achieved advanced civilisations, manufacturing luxurious for Europeans well into the C19th - ever seen buildings and gardens Chinese, Koreans, Malaysians built 1000s of years ago?), Or, he also thinks Ghanaians are civilised like Ken Kuramchie until he went to prison to discover that Ghanaians are not civilised? What you see them doing, including their so-called graduates, some wielding PhDs, are simply manifestations of their backwardness! The veneer of cosmetic Western education they have acquired simply cover their thicker unschooled, peasant origin layer below their skin. Until their eyes opened and they can see that this universe was not created literally in 6 days by a deity who took a rest on the 7th, they'd continue to behave as you detest. For most alive today, that's impossible, so we must count on the future generation.

Anyway, the matter has been dealt with in a more serious tone by my good friend Femi Akomolafe now based in Ghana. I bring a bit of teh review of his book by Ben Ephson from his blog.

2. AFRICA: DESTROYED BY THE GODS (How religiosity destroyed Africa)

In “Africa: Destroyed by the gods,” the author laments the destruction he believes religions have wrought on his beloved continent of Africa.

This is without a doubt one of the most controversial books to be written in Ghana, if not the whole of Africa.

Religion is dear to many people on the continent, but Femi sees it as great impediment that has contributed to what he calls the “Zombieization of the people.”

In the nineteen chapters of the book, Femi takes issue with almost every facet of the Christian religion which, to him, was merely an ideological tool Europeans used to pacify Africa and, which he believes is being use today by Priests to make people accept conditions, like shocking poverty, that should be unacceptable.

As he explains in the introduction: “My motivations for writing this book came from the pain I feel when I see the havoc foreign religions have wrought on Africa, especially in the last three decades.

had that kind of money to pay the hospital. This young lady's friend went to
the bank and borrowed the money and when it was time to pay the bank the
individual walked away from her obligation to pay the bill in which she signed
for. The local police went to this 82 year old residence and asked for the funds.
The lady told the police she never applied for those funds and did not have that
kind of money so the Police put her in jail. They police now call this young lady every
day and ask her if she will pay them a bribe they will let her mother out of jail.
I can not believe that this still goes on. How long can this dear lady last in jail
at the age of 82. Would appreciate your feed back and possible contacts who
would look in on this lady. She is in the jail in Kumasi - Ghana - and if someone
in your organization finds this very disturbing and maybe contact the proper

Our leaders especially the new and now generation of 'prosperity prophesying pastors and prophets instead of teaching us to develop ourselves spiritually, to 'hear and do'' rather have turned God into a 'fear factor'and reduced every natural occurrence into a spiritual issue. We see growing beyond control, a 'master/slave relationship for survival.
Up to the point where Christians see that there is urgent need to self develop spiritually, MY PEOPLE SHALL PERISH FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE! Be Blessed

one of the truest definitions of slavery is that it is infantilism meaning slavery creates the notion in a slave that nothing he/she does is due to his/her actions and decisions, because a slave has a master who decides his life and death and all things concerning his life even the capacity to love etc. when the european started dealing in slaves in africa the slave buyer/ trader/ owner was the one responsible for the slaves life and death and all things including the lives of a slaves child. make no mistake that these europeans were christians supported by their states and churches. christianity was taught to africans to replace the white slave master with the jewish fetish jehovah, he became our new slave master and so we keep on saying "god willing", "if god permits" etc. these are all sign that we are still slaves to white supremacist christians. we adore their god so much we give him total control of our lives, it is no surprise that we are unable as a people to devise solutions to our problems, it is always "god willing"

3. Some Ghanaians blaming the floods on a curse placed by God on Ghana because the NDC in power.

This is clearly the mindset of a people who clearly do not know what they are about. We always look for the convenient way out; the unseen. I am sure we make GOD sad.

The current form of Religion that we are talking about was brought to ghana and Africa by the Europeans. But Strangely(?) it has not hurt them.

I think there are other factors that combined with 'Religion' to yield the fatal toxic situation we are in as Africans.

We are very dishonest! We have redefined dishonesty as CLEVERNESS, cheating, and duping anyone who puts their trust in us.
We are ignorant of almost everything, but we can't have it, to be taught something that borders on commonsense. We rather prefer hearing stories that place us in a better light to hearing the truth, especially BITTER truths.
These are a few of the factors that make it easy for the lazy thinking Blackman to be deceived by "Clever" ones, who in many cases bear incredible Titles like Bishops, Prophets, Cardinals, Apostles and the like.

You can provide vegetable seedlings to a relative to cultivate and enjoy the fruits of his toil. But that may be successful, until a Prophet comes around to tell them to spend their time praying instead of sweating, in great expectation of Gods Blessings.

If anything at all, only situations BEYOND OUR CONTROL should be referred to the Creator.

For instance, it would be quite difficult for man to prevent an earthquake. All one could do would be to plead with a Higher Authority to provide some wisdom and energy so that one could fabricate earthquake-proof structures, etc.

Even for rainfalls, there are ways to seed clouds to cause rainfall, figured out by people whose chose to use their brains rather than just pray for rains.

What we have in Ghana,are a group of charlatans adept in deception, preying on the vulnerable.I cannot for the life of me understand why people flock to their churches.I,my brothers and sisters would not be here today had it not been the hospital built by the catholic church in our district.What used to be an "epitome" of clinical excellence run by "selfless and devoted" white missionaries from the fifties to the year 2000 is now a graveyard run by Black Ghanaians.To make matters worse,the hospital is now surrounded by a host of bogus pentecostal churches fleecing the sick and the vulnerable.

Folks, most contributors here generally agree with the writer. What we should be discussing is how we overturn this deficit and become the majority. Our voices should be heard and our reasoning convincing enough to change the status quo. As far as I know, like-minded people like us have no representation whatsoever in Ghana and Africa at large. I propose that we set up a body that will look into setting up a group that can meet, share ideas, and influence decision making in the country.

Religion has stolen a long march on us therefore the task ahead isn't for the faint hearted. We need to neutralise and reverse the damage that religion has done to us as a people and, religion will die a natural death, the knock-on effect being the true emancipation of the black race and the rise to critical thinking. Our absence on the ground has created a void that has been filled by people fooled by religion, as the writer so aptly describes it.

Nketia is right and passionate, but the argument is slightly tilted the other way round. Remember, in the Americas, Europe they do have their religious beliefs and practices. Even amongst the Asians who are taking over the world's economy, religion is much predominant. So, then, the issue isn't about how religious we are as Africans. In fact, a every true bible student will attest that the bible does not brainwash us, doesn't make us dull in mind but rather sharp thinking, wise judgements, pro-activeness and hardwork. Before foreign religions creeped into Africa, we were already incurably religious.
Our main bane isn't the religion per se but our in-borne inability to think, create and innovate. Our weaknesses have been perfectly utilized by crooks and wicked men as how the Europeans colonized and exploited us. The sad part is, we have still not gotten the wake-up sense after years western education and enlightenment! The most educated people amongst us most at times become the most foolish. Most of the churches in Ghana were started in America or Europe, but those there do not behave as we here.
Our prayer should be that we have a change of mindset by training our minds to be problem solvers and change activists.

Many times people will cling to superstitions because it is easier than taking responsibility for their own problems.

It takes effort to try to figure out, by yourself, why "bad" things happen, and even more effort to accept that this is just a part of human evolution...to encounter problems and then, by reason, figure out how to overcome the problems.

As more Ghanians are exposed to science and logic, hopefully they will be able to find a path where cultural and spiritual beliefs can be dealt with by taking responsibility and finding ways to overcome the problem.

Im a Christian myself and think the writer is only trying to emphasize the point that most of our problem we have are man made and we can solve them. Look at the instance of the governments initiative to import coal.. Really?...when we are in the tropics with abundant sunshine?...a close family member became anaemic because she kept bleeding way past menopause, the only option was an operation to remove her womb because she was old and had had all the children she desired.. She went through the obvious Ghanaian ritual... Visiting pastors and spiritualist to pray for her problem to cease... But she kept on bleeding and became very weak... Till a very wise pastor told her to go for the operation and not waste any more money on pastors..long story short she's alive and still with us today... If she had waited any longer she would Av died at the hands of one money hungry pastor...Even in the Bible God's servants worked very hard to achieve what God ordained for them to... Even Jesus Christ had his work cut out for him... He prayed yes but he still went about making the Gospel known to multitudes... The gutter infront of someones house will be choked with rubbish they put there and you pray for God to stop flooding??? It's time for Ghanaians to wise up... We can still be prayerful but hardwork pays.
