But quite seriously, the Bono state was a far more advanced state than Asante, when it comes into fruition AFTER THE DEFEAT OF DENKYIRA IN 1700. It was even more powerful. Had it not been for the betrayal of that Asante double agent who deceived and convinced the Bonos to bury their guns, that engagement would have gone very badly against the Asantes. The defeated Bono king, the history books show, went on to teach the newly founded Asante kingdom much of what are today regarded as Asante - state organisation, gold weights, taxation including seizing the lands of deceased chiefs, captains, etc., etc.Of course, the Bonos played a major role in the wars against the Fantes, for instance. And the Bono reactionary and ethnocentric evil genie Kofi Abrefa Busia remains the icon of your political tradition and the ethnocentrism associated with your party.

Now, it wasn't ONLY the Asantes who resisted colonial rule. The Bond of 1844 some Fante States signed with the British was not a colonised-us treaty, but a treaty of mutual protection, especially against Asante slave raiders and plunderers at a time the slave trade had been abolished and the British were the ones trying to curb it in Africa too. Don't we all know about the ill-fated Fante Confederacy and King Ghartey? They simply succumbed to a superior military force, not slave masters; you Asantes were the Slave Masters at the time. Of course, the British used to be your biggest customers. That's why one demand of Yaa Asantewaa and his group of rebels was the restoration of the slave trade! Phew! Some heroine!

And then remember that the B/A was part of Asante which fought against the English, so people from there, who were also then regarded as Asantes, fought against the British in the Sagrenti, which was actually the last major war fought against the British. The Yaa Asantewaa War was just a rag-tagged rebellion of already defeated people, involving only a small section of the former Asante kingdom. Even some major sections of Asante, e.g., Bekwai, were in rebellion again, and so did not fight against the British. As a matter of fact, many of the former vassal states which used to be part of the Asante kingdom, fought against their former overlords. For your home work, which of them did an Asante king (which king was that?) say that the Asante forces should attack too and he was told by the elders, Okomfo Anokye had decreed that they should never do that? What did Okomfo Anokye say would happen if they were ever attacked? It is only ignorant Asantes like you who get yourselves embroiled in insulting and demeaning others.

And finally, the Anlos also fought against the British in the Sagrenti War. They took on the "Hausa" forces brought by Captain Glover, which forces went on to form the nucleus of the Ghana Armed Forces of today. Anlos therefore refer to this 1874 war as the Glover War. If we were on an email forum, I'd have attached an A3 sketch of the peace conference (palava) at Dzelukope. The Asantes were represented by their Chief Ambassador Okobim Paba.

I am sick and tired of you ignorant and foolish "these Akans" and your nonsense. I think it was long overdue you are told the told truth about the abominable nature of the predatory Asante kingdom. I feel no pride at all but shame that my ancestors were associated with their plunder, looting, mass genocide and destruction of African civilisation that the slave trade brought in its wake. Tell me how Asantes were slave masters. There were captured prisoners of war on all sides but Asantes who did not see eye to eye kept our captured slaves and settled them peacefully.

Good example is the Denkyiras who were brought to Ashanti region and settled at Atwima Nwabiagya and integrated into the Ashanti Kingdom. The lies about Asantes selling captured prisoners is a figment of your trokosi child molesting imagination. Asantes did not trade in slavery with the colonial masters who we did not have any good relationship with. It was rather the Fante people who sold the captured Asante prisoners of war into slavery.

You can cry your eyes out and write tales about Asante Kingdom and it will not change any historical facts that shows Asante Kingdom was the most advanced in Africa when the whites set foot in Africa.

Go to museums in England or any other country in Europe and you will read about only the Asante tribe and not Bono or Ewes.

Please, find your way to the nearest library and order Wilks' seminal work on the Asantes titled The Asantes. It didn't say all and he indicated where gaps are - gaps I could have easily filled some for him - and you'd be a little wiser.

You see, I sat with the elders as a little boy in the early '60s when they answered questions from researchers, white and black. Some qs they feigned ignorance about the events were freely discussed before me when they left! I think the time is drawing near to reveal all.

Load of you are in overseas countries where a visit to a good library can provide you good history books on Ghana to read. You can even do your own research on source materials. Above all, one can find almost everything on the Internet these days. So can't you just google for it! Damn it! Do that!

Anyway, I recommend the white Aburi Chief, H. Moxon's entertaining book titled The Volta: Man's Largest Lake to all of you to read. It is a compact history of Ghana, from the period when pygmies were the original inhabitants. You'd read all about the 1874 campaign and confirm what I wrote.

Get off back! Is it cos we don't brag about those things which we regard as shameful today? My own great, great, great grandfather, father of Torgbui Sri II, sat in prime position to negotiate peace with the British. The culinary inclination and choices of the peoples is something which intrigued me growing up, exposed to an enlightened environment as it were. For my life, I wouldn't try some - the very thought of some makes me cringe and feel nausea, squeamish as I am about food (don't even eat some Anlo staples such as abolo, kokui, timu (kenkey), Joe? I tried before, etc. - but I haven't developed, I believe, ethnocentric prejudices about what others eat.

You see, growing up, I read Chairman Mao's account of the Long March. Yeah! There were loads of books to read, including all of Nkrumah's publication, Danquah's (his novel the Third Woman was only one book I never finished reading), a bunch of Kim Il Sung's (probably still holding the title for the most prolific author!). Mao recounted that at a stage when many were dying from starvation, they came out with a principle that posits that every plant and animals (flora and fauna) are eatable so long as they are not poisonous to man. They set up a system to test plants which were not eaten before as vegetables. Of course, rodents like rats became a much sought delicacy! Through that, millions of lives were saved during the Long March and the difficult times afterwards.

As a pan-Africanist, I am against further balkanisation of Africa. That's why I oppose my own Ewe secessionists who now even have an office to operate from in Ghana. They also say Akans cannot be re-educated and de-brainwashed to stop insulting and looking down upon we Ewes, so the solution for us is to secede.

I disagree with them. I know many Asantes who are not like the Sarpongs and the Katakyies of this world. They are actually very embarrassed by what they write and say publicly. And some are even NPP members unlike my good friend and soulmate Francis Kwarteng!

One such person was the late Dr Francis Appiah, a grandson of the NLM mojo himself, Baffour Akoto, who was my year mate in the Pol. Science Dept in Legon in the late '70s.; and, my departmental colleague in the Administration and Organisation Theory (ADMORG) Dept. in the Univ. of Bergen in the early '90s. Had I returned home, as I was planning too, perhaps, both of us might have authored jointly on this ethnic imbroglio in Ghana. Well, all of you will have to accept my One Firewood version.:-)

On a more serious note, it should be apparent to a discerning visitor to Ghanaweb that many enlightened and constructive "commentators" to the site no longer do so because of the vituperations that characterize most responses to their comments.

There is no where on this earth that person will heap insults on you merely for the fact that he/she has an opinion different to yours except amongst Ghanaians.

It would appear some people in their delusions believe they hold monopoly to wisdom and anything that deviates from what the "believe" in is a sacrilege.

I visit Ghanweb everyday before I go to bed just to keep abreast with events/developments in the country but reserve my views.

Long time. I wasn't eating those things from my childhood until I left Ghana. Just happened that I was barely two years when the whole family moved from Accra to Damongo to be with Papa while he liquidated the Settlement Project for the ex-servicemen the British wanted to get rid of before independence. So my culinary formative years were not in the abolo, kenkey culture.

I also glance at Ghanaweb almost everyday too but hardly comment. I can only manage that after work, so by then, the insults had already clouded the place. I therefore keep my views to myself too most times.
As you know, we Anlos can insult well, well but I simply don't have the time to indulge in the luxury some think it is. Besides, Torgbui Sri II abolished the Insult War Festival in Anlo decades ago. The Gas though seems to have theirs - Lakpa - which got Bunkom Banka into trouble a while ago. Been thinking of writing a piece on insults of social and political mechanism in traditional and modern societies! But then, there are so many things I want to write on.

They are not even taught in schools. You have already pointed out some of these "hidden" facts of history. This is the kind of propaganda that breeds inter-ethnic animosity and conflicts.

Yes, Katakyie should have responded to Nkansah by also bringing out some of the facts of history which you (Andy) bring out and not elevating one ethnic group above the other, which the historical record does not support, as in the Asante case.

In fact Katakyie's article is unnecessary (it's ahistorical). I guess what anyone will say about the GUANS who already inhabited many of these lands before other ethnic groups later settled them.

Each ethnic group has contributed and still continues to do so to the development of the country. No ethnic group surpasses the other in this area.

I wish the "true" history will be told some day so that those unenlightened will become enlightened. The "true" facts of history would have forced Katakyie to look at his assumptions and core arguments before publishing his piece.

You are always clear and right on that part of Asante history. The kind of revelations you bring to public attention about Asante history and what is still not "revealed" about Asante history is more revealing and substantial than the distortions fed to the public.

And yes, I cringe when I hear the "whitewashed" version of Asante history, a substantial part of which easily dismissible.

I can say on authority that if ethnocentric and "tribalistic" Asantes know a fraction of this unrevealed history of the Asantes, as you rightly put it, they would shed their ethnocentric and "tribalistic" skins.

If Asante is a primitive Ethnic group, then no other group in Ghana is civilized. Period! We all belong together, and whether we like it or not, it is the Asante group that has the widest recognition globally among the Ghanaian Tribes or Ethnic groups.

If you had even read the Article well, you'd have realized that Okatakyie's Article was based on a wrong premise because, given his own account and quotes from Nkansah's remarks, Nkansah did not say 'Ashantis or Asantes' but Ashanti Region. Ashanti Region comprises all residents many of whom are non-Asantes. So, Okatakyie's Article should have cited the Region for defense, and not Ashantis. Ashanti Region does not necessarily mean Asantes only. It could well be that most of the activities Nkansah complained about might be engaged in more by non-Asante residents of the Region than the native Asantes themselves. After all, the majority of Asantes live in the rural areas and did not partake in those demonstrations. Many of the Market-Women who might have been part of the demonstration could as well be non-Asantes.

So, your attack on Asantes are unwise, illogical, and unacceptable.

I don't think this is how we want the Nation to proceed into the next Elections. The ghosts of the various genocidal events in Africa still hover around us. They may be looking for company in their horrific sojourn in oblivion. It is our responsibility as Ghanaians to resist every temptation to draw us into such gruesome state of intolerance and mutual murder.

We have to learn from the mistakes of others across the Continent and not foolishly hide our failure to solve our problems behind any Tribal or Ethnic feud. We are only exposing our stupidity to the whole World by courting such genocidal confrontation among us.

Let us smart up!! Leave Ashantis alone and pressure the Government to solve our mutual problems.

We should show respect to all tribes, not try to show that my tribe, after all, is better than yours. That is what the present writer is doing. There's no need for him to prove to us the worth of Asantes. That is a given because all tribes in Ghana are worthy. There's no need for anybody to try to prove anything about his or her tribe.

Why should the writer think that people are envious of Asantes? I can't understand how anybody can be envious of a whole tribe. How? By saying people are envious of Asantes, the writer is childishly saying that Asantes are superior that is why they attract envy. That line of reasoning is derogatory to other tribes. We should show respect for all tribes and not think that one tribe hates another or is envious of another.

I got to know that he insulted Asantes through Agyemang's article which is what I am commenting on. Agyemang has the right to defend his tribe and condemn Nkansa. My point is that if he does so, he shouldn't at the same time end up raising his tribe above those of others.

You seem to be upset about the writer enumerating what his region contributes to Ghana after somebody from Central region has said Nothing good comes from Ashanti region. He has every right to show what Ashanti region contributes to Ghana to show that the region is relevant. What other region comes close in terms of resources apart from Western region?

You are saying one should be proud of who one is. SARPONG, you don't see that it is in pursuit of that "I am proud of who I am" that will lead to your implying that you are better than someone else?

The author makes other "childish" remarks. For instance he says his region has produced three heads of state one of whom was the best we ever had. SARPONG, isn't it children who make such arguments? If Ashanti Region produced three heads of state, is that not a VERY NORMAL thing? What is unique about that? Are Asantes not Ghanaians capable of producing heads of state? They are and it is nothing to be saying here to prove anything! In principle, every tribe or region of Ghana can produce heads of state. The region that has not (yet) produced a head of state is not on account of that inferior to the region that has.

If we all regard ourselves as Ghanaians, we won't stop and be counting what each region has contributed to the nation and, by implication, which other regions have NOT contributed anything.

You see, sometimes, by overstating the obvious, one ends up displaying one's immaturity. No sensible and mature Ghanaian will argue that Asantes and Ashanti Region are insignificant. For me as a Ghanaian, that question doesn't even arise.

SARPONG, because you are Asante, you don't see what is wrong with the "prejudices" that the present writer is recounting here. You have failed to read between the lines.

The writer categorically states that other tribes hate Asantes and are envious of Asantes. You don't see that as prejudices he is repeating here? The reading is clear: we are better than them, that is why they are envious of us!!! The very premise of his article is that other tribes hate Asantes! I see that as a childish argument too.

I still stand by my initial point: Nkansa's statement against the Asantes should be condemned. But in doing so, we should be circumspect about the way we project our own tribes.

If you're an Ashanti and think women, irrespective of age and of social status should walk half naked in any street, day or night, then I do feel sorry for Ashanti's who take offense at being called out even as they deem ongoing activities natural. What has been happening in the Ashanti region is not normal or standard Ashanti culture. It never was, no not throughout the history of what is now Ghana, until the Kufour NPP administration ushered in the era of greed, disrespect and tribal preferences that consumes Ghana today. Can anyone explain the wisdom behind the refusal of Ashantis to partake in the National Health insurance scheme or making life difficult for people to vote their conscience?. Looking the other way or hiding behind the skirts of women as women pose nude for whatever reason has never been a Ghanaian culture; being chicken shit for not calling people out as morals are slowly eroded for short term political gains must not be torelated. Be a man and call out foolishness for no Ghanaian has ever required tribal approval to say it like it is. Do we not have people from the various tribes in Ghana migrate to live in Accra while they disrespect the traditions of the Ga people? Should only NDC members or Fantis be allowed to talk to or listen to Nkansah? Is he supposed to hold his tongue because some in the "mighty" Ashanti tribe has the corner market on all this silly with no rebuke needed?

From as far back as possible, many of us have always been admonishing all to drop the wave of tribal animosities that has crept deeply into our Politics.

It is most unfortunate that we cannot focus on the relevant issues to argue about their facts but always digress to blame any associated problems on some particular tribe.

To me, blaming a whole tribe for any particular national problem is not only uncivilized but also treasonous because of its likely genocidal repercussions.

We have to admit that no matter what the majority of Ghanaians do to curb that behavior, there will always be a few incorrigible idiots who will never change and continue to evoke tribal feuds in our national discourse. It is up to the majority enlightened and morally upright Citizens to help stop the spread of that inimical behavior.

That said, the good, decent Ghanaians of all tribes must not succumb to any provocations by the few evil ones who would want us to kill one another and dismantle the Ghana Nation.

In that regard, I would like to point out that Opoku-Agyemang may have erred to make things worse as to how he handled what Solomon Nkansah said.

Granted that Solomon Nkansah also erred to describe the Ashanti Region the way he did, he did not isolate Ashantis (Asantes) for that insulting description.

Ashanti Region is not necessarily synonymous with Ashantis (Asantes), especially when we even go by Okatakyie Opoku-Agyemang's own assertion in his Article that the Ashanti Region is the most diverse Region in Ghana. Solomon Nkansah's insulting comment applies to all residents of the Ashanti Region, not only Ashantis. In fact, if we were to examine the composition of the group of Women who went on that demonstration to engender Nkansah's remarks, I strongly believe it would be established that many of them are of other Tribes resident in the Ashanti Region. Many of the Market-Women are non-Ashantis or non-Akans. So, Solomon Nkansah could not possibly have meant that only Ashantis were culpable for whatever he deemed unacceptable about that demonstration.

Meanwhile, I admonish Okatakyie Opoku-Agyemang to be circumspect in responding to such remarks as Solomon Nkansah made, however offensive they may be. I bet if pushed to explain his remarks, Mr. Nkansah would quickly claim that he was talking about the Region not the natives thereof. And in that case, Okatakyie's claim that Mr. Nkansah was tribalistic would be wrong, and any vengeful response that insults other tribes, including Mr. Nkansah's, would then be the offending culprit in a charge of tribalism.

It seems that many are already disposed to be overly sensitive to any criticism of their groups. Therefore, the slightest semblance of criticism of that group draws their strongest and worst responses for vengeance.

I would like to point out the particular response SARPONG, for instance, gave to one 'All-be-die' who he assumed might be some Boateng who is a Bono or Brong, was uncalled for. SARPONG blatantly called the Bono Ancestors of Boateng primitive. This is what I see as the unfortunate misconceived and undeserving vengeful results from the type of response that Okatakyie submitted.

It is not only unacceptable for anyone to be insulting a whole Tribe for the wrongful behavior of only one of its members. Similarly, Solomon Nkansah should have realized that not the whole of Ashanti Region supported the demonstration to be deserving his demeaning remarks.

So, let us show real intelligence here and critically assess every assertion someone makes, and offer the best unifying and constructive response to it. In that vein, I would resist the temptation of accepting any retaliatory insult on SARPONG, and call all others to refrain from trading insults with him, since it would only aggravate the situation.

I would therefore like to emphatically register that both Solomon Nkansah and Okatakyie were wrong, and both need to revise their attitudes to issues confronting Ghana, and work for a more constructive solution for each issue.

On a further thought, I see nothing wrong with Ashanti Region being the most active Region politically, and being the first to react to any national problem with louder calls to the Administration for redress. If anything at all, it shows the Region's residents are the best tuned to Ghana's issues. If other Regions would drag their feet to complain about an obvious national problem, it does not mean Ashanti Region must wait for them to register its discontent. That is Democracy at its most expected form, and Mr. Nkansah must be more about solving the problems than insulting any Region.

However, that error does not exonerate you from the essence of my reference. No one could be in the right to call a whole tribe or Ethnic group derogatory names just because of the idiotic behavior of one of its members. So, if Boateng called Asantes 'Primitives', he was darn wrong, and that is totally unacceptable, and we should all call him out on it in the strongest terms possible.

Similarly, your insult on Boateng, calling his Ancestors as "Gyimii" amounts to the same epithet as you accuse Boateng of having dumped on Asantes. None of you is acting mature and civilized in that respect. Take it or leave it!

And just so you know, making a mistake in transposing as I did, does not amount to lying. That is a genuine error and I have apologized and corrected it. Meanwhile, the most important point here is the unacceptability of your behavior in stereotypically insulting a whole Tribe or Ethnic group in retaliation of one person's wrongdoing.

If you know better, you take that opportunity to educated that offending person, and even ask for the Law to deal with him or her appropriately, if we have any such Laws to curb bigotry and xenophobia.

Once you drop to that offender's level to retaliate in kind, you are no better, and both of you deserve to be reprimanded.
