Brilliant article. This is what our parliamentarians should have taken pains to find out from the experts before displaying their ignorance on the subject matter.Just think for a moment the international recognition of the 42 health volunteers who spent 3months to help fight Ebola in the affected three countries in West Africa; the vaccine trial in Ghana would have been the icing on the cake. Can you imagine the kind of respect that our scientists would command among their peers worldwide? Shame to our honorables for such a blunder

My friend, your so called scientists will not command any respect anywhere apart from the money they will receive from the manufacturer of the vaccine, they have nothing to do with the manufacture of the vaccine to command any respect.
They are only fighting to get the experiment done in Ghana because of the money they took or they will take from the manufacturer.
Sodzi should tell wherein the UK and US adults were vaccine with the drugs,he should not lie to us we know better,America or US in particular did not experiment the drug on anybody not suffering from the disease, they refused to do it so the manufacturers have to look for the poor somewhere where they can easily influence them with few bucks and a mobile phone which seems to be a luxury for them.
It is simple,Sodzi and his so called colleague scientists together with their families and you guys supporting them should join hands to experiment the drugs and receive the 200 cedis and the mobile phones, leave the poor folks to die their natural deaths but not through some imported deaths,Ibola vaccine will not bring any positive change in the life of any Ghanaian.

... not panic knee-jerk reactions. Our parliamentarians have the right to raise concerns but these should be based on informed knowledge. Sodzi's article appears to be well informed. Those who are also well informed on the topic should also tell us the shortcomings in Sodzi's argument. Then the general public can be better informed on the whole issue.
If so many countries in both the advanced and developing countries are involved in the trials, Ghana has to have very strong reasons not to take part. I don't think I have read from anywhere any such strong reasons.
By all means, trials must be conducted somewhere. Standard safeguards are always available. We cannot miss the chance to be in the vanguard of such scientific research especially since we are not normally known for any groundbreaking research in our country even though we have a queer tendency of referring to the few brilliant people we have as "world class", "world renown" as if those designations are enough to tell us of the omnipotence of those men of learning.
And we need informed debate on other issues too - especially here on ghanaweb where people can write long articles on education when they have not read the underlying study or long about GMO foods when they don't even know what is involved if a gene is manuipulated...

Mawuli, if you have any good reasons for Ghana not taking part in the trials, then tell us here. Saying those in favour of the trials should try them on their families doesn't answer the relevant questions.

Sodzi is from the Volta region and has a family in the region and in addition to that he lives in Accra,he can drive his family to either Ho or Hohoe to get the vaccine,he is also a medical doctor who knows what to do to get the vaccine, if he thinks it is good for the others he should go for it.

Corney, I am not saying that I know what I am saying. I am saying precisely that I don't know and I want to be properly informed.
All I am saying is that we should make informed arguments, no matter what position we take. If you don't want Ghana to take part in the tests, then tell us the concrete reasons why that is your viewpoint. If you want us to take part in the tests, then tell us, who don't know, the reasons why we should not. That is what I mean by informed debate.
Saying that Sodzi, who is in favour of the trials in Ghana, should try the vaccines on his family first, is not informed debate. Even if Sodzi asks his wife and children to take part in the trials and inoculates himself with the vaccines, that will still not be good evidence that the trials are good for Ghana. And I am sure that even if Sodzi tries the vaccines on himself, that will still not make you, CORNEY, think the trials are good for Ghana. So that argument that Sodzi should try the vaccines on his family first is a moot one.

He is saying that people who subject other people to a risk should be prepared to submit themselves to it too. Nothing wrong with that argument. Is Sodzi prepared to join in or not? Lets have a answer.

Jato Kaleo. You have got it wrong. It is not up to anyone to give reasons against vaccine trials. It is up to those responsible to show that they are safe. They will be responsible if anything goes wrong.

On your other point: if Dr Sodzi, who is in favour of the trials, tells us that he is ready to submit himself, and his entire clan, to the trials, will that fact, in and of itself, mean the trials are safe for us all?
My argument is that it will not. The willingness of the conductors of the trial to submit themselves to their own trials cannot be used as scientific evidence for the safety of the trials!!! The safety of the trials should be established on scientific grounds, not on the willingness, or otherwise, to take part of those who favour the trials.
