MASSA KOFI, thanks for this reasonable and balanced analysis. In the ideal world, during by-elections, voters turn on the party in power to deliver the usual bloody nose if that Government is regarded deeply disappointing or overwhelmingly incompetent. Hey, this is Ghana. Significantly, the fact that President Mahama[NDC], Nana Akufo-Addo[NPP], Dr Nduom[PPP], Samia Nkrumah[CPP] and others were in the Talensi area to campaign for their respective Parliamentary candidates demonstrate the campaign battles for the 2016 General Election.
Of course, the NPP could not retain the Talensi Parliamentary seat as the NDC won. But, given the traditional grassroot support for the NDC in that part of the country and the campaign tactics employed, the outcome must not come as a surprise. Of course, the Talensi by-election is a morale-boosting for President Mahama and the NDC party, but Talensi is just one of many constituencies in the country. Talensi cannot be replicated across the country. The different constituencies and regions in the country have different ethnic/tribal/cultural allegiances, voting intentions, level of education and enlightenment, and traditional political loyalty.
NPP's failure to retain the seat must be a stunning disappointment for Nana Akufo-Addo as the leader of the party as he sounded overly confident in NPP's ability to retain the Talensi seat. This Talensi by-election outcome should make the NPP to understand the "Northern Challenge" the party faces as it plans towards the 2016 General Election.

The victory for NDC means that they are still popular in their strong holds and NPP campaign strategy was ineffective. In politics, you cannot tell me that you are always going to win at your strong holds even if you don't campaign effectively. It was for this same reason NDC lost Talensi to NPP in 2012.Likewise,the NPP also have lost some seats to NDC in their strong holds because of ineffective campaign strategy. When you are given opportunity to campaign, don't just sit down and think here is my strong hold so you are going to win.Let me make it clear here, without an effective campaign strategy you can't win any seat in elections.Thank you.

Kofi,
This is not realistic! Frankly I suspect that the NPP made an appearance at Talensi just for the sake of it. Talensi is no different from any constituency in the Volta Region! If in spite of all the hardships that most Ghanaians are going through today, the voters of the Northern Regions would still vote for Mahama "because he is a Northerner," as he himself put it, why should anybody bother about those constituencies?
The way our electoral arithmetic works, the NPP can win about 4.5 regions in 2016 and still win the elections, without bothering about the places where people resort to violence and intimidation!

You always like to display your abject illiteracy! If the Northerners and the Ewes are going to vote the way they always vote then since the Akan regions have borne the brunt of Mahama's incompetence, one would expect that the people of the Central, Western and Brong Ahafo Regions would vote with their heads this time.
In that case one quarter of the votes here, one half there would clinch it. I guess that kind of arithmetic is beyond you!

Where on this planet do you live? At least those of us who run businesses in Ghana know what we are going through and we also know what we are telling our employees and relations!

Ata Kofi, congratulation for this time wrote a perfect balance article without bias and also you acknowledge the abuse of power by the incumbency ruling party to capture the seat from opposition NPP.Ata Kofi the article was brilliant without bias but what you fall to adress was the barometer president Mahama promise to has set.In Talensi by-election we read in the news that it was charactorise by violence and this barometer that president Mahama has set indicate that he has no respect for human lives and he will kill to retain power. All political parties need to acknowledge that president Mahama barometer is nothing but violence and rigging that he intend to bring in 2016 election.Ata Kofi i think your question is Talensi accurate barometer for 2016? and the is yes because president Mahama will bring violence in every polling station to retain power that is the barometer he is talking about and not respect human lives.
