A whiteman wanted to know why Blacks complained about their status. He metamorphosed and lived like Blacks for a week .PkB another wanted to know what poverty was like so he lived on foodstamps for a month .PkB you confuse private ownership of production with welfarism .Socialism is state ownership of the means of production.Would you like to be paid $5.oo per hour ?Well that gets you $800 per month. Then you pay rent for $600.With $200 you have to eat , clothe yourself and pay transport. But that is gross so take away 33% for tax and social security .You will then save and pay school fees if you have a child and save $100K for university tuition.PKB stop your childish rapple. We have been there and the maths does not add up.That is why the governments have brought in relief .That is welfare and NOT SOCIALISM.But even with that USA has the highest prison population in the world .Violence is rampant .Please write about what Africa can do to get out of poverty.Write about entrepreneuralship and how we can best provide food security and homeownership. Do you know how rentals have gone up because of foreclosures? It is transfer of wealth from the poor to the wealthy.Have you heard of income inequality?Richman PKB stay in your Ivory Tower and stop preaching your ignorance to us .Leave Bra Kwarteng alone

Hello Kojo T, it is extremely good when you ask very serious questions. However, it doesn’t help the debate when you combine it with insults. Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t respond, because they are very pertinent questions that is why I have taken the pain to do you the honours.
The very people who earn $ 5 an hour are very young people mostly in their teenage years without the requisite job experience on the job market. The most significant caveat is that they do not have those outgoings you have catalogued. They live with their parents to build extra human capital before they venture out to stake their own. Most importantly, those people who receive $ 5 an hour do not stay in that category for long. They progress with experience to earn $ 10 and $ 15 an hour later in life.
On your taxation twist I don’t think you have to make that mistake. There is what we call progressive taxation. Those on the lower pile of the income scale, especially here in Britain that I have knowledge of their tax system don’t pay any income tax until they reach a certain threshold.
For the foreclosures, as you live in the United States you can vote for politicians who will put premium on enacting laws that will make it easier for developers to have easy access to less expensive lands without the needless planning laws. When voters vote for open space laws, which make lands expensive pushing the prices of properties out of the reach of your $ 5 an hour earner you can’t blame capitalism for that.
Now, if you are poor and your child is brilliant enough to attend university to read a worthwhile course he can have a student loan and pay it off when he starts earning.
As for your Kwarteng I have not finished with him yet. The fact is he started it, and when I queried him on that he tried to play holier than thou. By the time I am done with him you may still not agree with me on the hoof, but when you go to bed and you start thinking about it you will know that he is just like my smart little girl.
By the way, your intro was funny. Thank you.

The truth is that, Nkrumah's ideas were unsuitable for growing the economy since the communist system lucks mechanisms and incentives that release energies of the people to create wealth. He, therefore, met a rich and confident country with huge potentials, and left it nearly bankrupt in some few years as a result of gross leftist mismanagement.

Well, you and your ilk are defenders of capitalism and you choose capitalism as the path that Ghana and Africa should tread and for this reason you are against anything that Nkrumah tells Africa because, Nkrumaism has socialist ingredients. I am sure you do not read Nkrumah's works or you do not critically analyse what he writes if you even read them else you do not understand what Nkrumah wrote even though his works are written in such a way that they are easily understood by a Secondary school student.
Nkrumah never said capitalism never worked for certain nations but rather what he emphasized is that, it is not a system that is suitable for a young nation such as Ghana or Africa. If you dispute this fact then the implication is that, you are not aware that your so called prosperous capitalist states did so through the enslavement and colonilisation of other nations. That is why Nkrumah reminded us that, it is so complex for a nation like Ghana to pursue such a system since we are no slave drivers and will never be so, neither are we going to colonize any other nation.
I wish you could name me any of your prosperous capitalist states that had not practised slavery and colonization.
Nkrumaism will eventually thrive in in Ghana and Africa because it is an authentic African ideology and humaine. All I am sure of is that you and your ilk are not African in mentality but mere quislings who blindly follow your slave masters merely because as Malcolm said, you are House slaves.

Anyway I will give one classic example and you can find out the rest as your homework. Germany was totally devastated after the Second World War. Before that they were stripped of all their colonies when they lost the First World War. It was through capitalist enterprise that they rose to surpass even the victorious European allied countries within few years. It is important to note that the country was partitioned after the war into East and West. And I don’t have to tell you the deprivation that existed in the East, which practiced socialism until they finally joined the West to form greater Germany. Ask yourself the question why was the Berlin wall erected. It was to stop the mass emigration of the East Germans into West Germany where there were greener pastures due to the application of capitalist principles. Thank you.

It was not capitalism per se that help Germany to recover. Rather, it was the $13 billion - appro $120 billion in current dollar value- that helped the Germans to rebuild their shattered economies.

What caveat? Did Germans give back to those they colonized all that they looted or bring back to life all those that they killed? Remember this: Nkrumah was neither looking left nor right but rather forward. Nkrumaism was adopting what will benefit Ghana or Africa and all that he did in Ghana and Africa proves him right. Nkrumah was not bothered whatever people called or labelled him and his ideas as long as they were for the freedom and progress of Africa and Africans all over the world.

The more you attack Kwarteng, the more you exhibit your antediluvian views. There is no more completely capitalistic, socialist/communist countries. Nations are gradually shifting into mixed economy - whether we apply the Nordic model, Beijing consensus, Asian tigers; PPP's are becoming the norm. Sustainability is giving way to hardcore ideological framework.
