It is a pity the writer didn't take a very clear-cut stance but was posing rhetorical questions after giving such massive evidence of the practice in pre-colonial times.

Whether homosexuality practised in ancient Africa as religious rite or for mere pleasure, it is the same thing: homosexuality. And we Africans indulged in it.

Those who argue that homosexuality is un-African are looking only at recent African history that reaches only to the European conquest. Homophobia was brought to Africa by European missionaries who carried such prejudices to Africa. Before that, no African ever thought of killing or persecuting anybody who indulged in the practice. Then Islam also came and re-inforced the European prejudice against homosexuals. Both European and Islamic injunctions against the practice were backed by Christianity and Islam respectively. But both religions were never part of African culture.

Today, you see Africans arguing that Christianity and Islam are parts of African culture but not homosexuality. It is rather the other way round. Homosexuality, a very natural act that is not commanded by any external forces, is more a part of African culture than Christianity and Islam both of which were forced on us in Africa by OUTSIDERS!

Yes, some Africans are simply running away from our homosexual past. All the reasons Africans give against homosexuality are reasons they took from Europeans and Arab Islamists.

In the end, the issue of homosexuality is a human one, not one of whether it is part of African culture or not. It is a matter of human rights that affects the entire human race. It is an issue of DISCRIMINATION against a set of human beings who have CLEARLY NOT HARMED anybody by their sexual orientations.

And we must all fight against DISCRIMINATION, whether we are homosexual or not!

Also in my experience the most virulent antigay people have "issues"; they may be closeted and feel compelled to demonstrate heterosexuality by condemning gay people or jealous because they don't have the courage to be open about their sexuality. By the way "SUPI" the custom practiced in Ghana seems to be a form of lesbianism. It is not surprising that Africans are antigay. We still enforce absurd laws foisted on us by Europeans who have long abandoned this absurdities that we are in thrall to!! Live and let live.

Homosexuality is among the many biological abnormalities which though prevalent in ancestors populations that migrated north from Africa many thousands of years ago, is quite rare among the real human species..most of whom are indigenous black Africans.Thousands of years ago in Europe and Asia, the African species that migrated there started having offspring with Neandertals (who are part human and part animal). Asian and European populations are ancestors of this biological contamination, and they have many biological abnormalities that are rare or absent in indigenous Africans. Same gender attraction is just one of these abnormalities. It is then not surprising that most of the Africans who are gay live in areas where they are many foreigners, or they are ones who are racially mixed. In western society, many men who are perfectly gay, are married and even have children..they do that to fit in with convention and to have a wife mostly as a friend and companion. Similarly, many gay men are often found in the company of women, though their true desire is other men. Despite the laws, there will always be stigma attached to homosexuality and it will always be a closetted activity. Another major reason for the proliferation of homosexuality in non-African populations is the racial inbreeding, which though designed to propagate "superior" species, just propagates the opposite. Just one of the abnormalities that is generated by inbreeding is homosexuality. And when colonialists went to Africa, they always sought to promote the African as abnormal and inferior to them. There is no hard evidence that Kabaka Mwanga of Uganda was a homosexual. He was always surrounded by fellow youngsters who fought alongside him and protected him. Converts to foreign religion were persecuted for not adhering to the laws and etiquette of the kingdom but instead preferring the foreigners and their religions. The persecution had nothing to do with sodomy. But some rare hearsay and rumor was propagated by whites who were not even closely affiliated with Mwanga. In the literature of the nineteenth century, non of the white missionaries and African scholars that were close day-to-day with Mwanga mention that he was a homosexual. He was accused of smoking pot, being a playboy, and heavily drinking, and being in the company of rebel youth. And Mwanga had many wives and mistresses who were often in his company. It would be hard to imagine that disciplinarian and traditionalist Buganda kingdom would allow for a king with strange abnormal tendencies to stay on the throne. Plus Mwanga was a young, more or less a ceremonial ruler whose decisions were guided and monitored by senior hereditary chiefs and prime-ministers. The executions of the "martyrs" some of whom were muslims, was not a sole decision on the part of Mwanga.

Anyone who passes the entrance to the university will NEVER go to journalism school. And those from university who go to graduate journalism schools hardly ever become practicing journalist. Therefore, the profession is left to dumb failures like this writer of the article to walk around as journalists. Citing European racists masquerading as so-called anthropologists as your source is STUPID. If Europeans had encountered Africans living in homosexual/lesbian relationships, they would have written tons and tons of books and articles about it, the same way they did about polygamy.

The European Court of Human Rights condemned Italy on Tuesday for failing to provide legal recognition to same-sex couples and said the country should introduce some form of civil union for homosexual couples.
Italy is the only major western European country that does not recognise either civil partnerships or gay marriage.
The country was taken to the Strasbourg-based European Court by three homosexual couples who all complained that Italy discriminated against them because of their sexual orientation.
In their ruling, a panel of seven judges said same-sex couples in Italy needed greater legal rights.
"The court considered that the legal protection currently available in Italy to same-sex couples ... not only failed to provide for the core needs relevant to a couple in a stable committed relationship, but it was also not sufficiently reliable," it said.
Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, said at the weekend his government would introduce a law on civil unions by the end of the year, convincing a junior minister to end a hunger strike he had started in early July to protest at the lack of legislation.
Draft legislation to allow for civil unions is blocked in the senate by thousands of amendments put forward by both the opposition and one of Mr Renzi's coalition partners.

The European Court of Human Rights was set up in 1959 and aims to protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law across the continent. It said 24 out of 47 member states of the Council of Europe rights watchdog had already legislated in favour of same-sex unions.
It ordered Italy to pay each plaintiff €5,000 (£3,500) in damages and up to €10,000 jointly to cover their costs and legal expenses.
Support for same-sex unions has risen in Italy, especially after another predominantly Roman Catholic country, Ireland, voted in May to legalise gay marriage.
